LO MEJOR – THE BEST:

Despiece básico pero muy bien detallado. Fácil de montar. Opciones (toldo, zona de carga). Piezas transparentes para faros y pilotos. Uso versátil (dioramas y escenas militares o aéreas).

Maqueta de gran calidad y además muy sencilla de montar. Ideal para cualquier modelista.

No por anunciado dejó de sorprender la aparición a fines de 2008 de esta maqueta de Tamiya, y no es para menos. Este vehículo de transporte de 10 caballos tan popular en la retaguardia de los ejércitos británicos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue apodado Tilly y fabricado por marcas diferentes: Austin, Hillman, Standard y Morris. Aunque las prestaciones eran similares, cada fabricante dejaba su sello en el chasis, ya que era en realidad la versión militar de un vehículo civil. En este caso, se trata de un Austin por la forma del capó y la rejilla del radiador.

Tamiya ha conseguido unir en esta maqueta su habitual calidad con una sencillez de montaje realmente notable. Comprende un bastidor con los transparentes, la carrocería moldeada de una pieza y un tercer bastidor para el resto de las piezas (chasis, ruedas, interior, etc.). Hay además una figura de conductor en indumentaria típica británica con la cabeza aparte. Completan el contenido de la caja las calcas y las instrucciones. Creo que a esta escala y dado el tamaño de este pequeño vehículo, no cabe mayor simplicidad en el despiece. El molde es de gran calidad, sin rebabas ni marcas en lugares visibles. Tamiya no ha despreciado ningún detalle, por ejemplo los indicadores y faros vienen como piezas transparentes separadas, el dibujo de los neumáticos es notable e incluso el pequeño tapón del depósito viene también aparte.

El montaje será sin duda rápido y ameno, dado que no hay problemas de encaje y apenas hay que lijar. Siguiendo el orden de las instrucciones, comenzamos por el chasis, que al llevar ya el suelo de la carrocería sobre él, nos permite añadir simplemente el tubo de escape, la suspensión y la barra de la dirección. En el interior de la cabina, además de los cuatro asientos individuales y el conductor, hay un pequeño tablero de instrumentos, el volante, la dirección y la palanca de marchas. Las ventanillas pueden montarse abiertas o cerradas mediante una pieza transparente (B7) que va pegada sobre el interior del techo del habitáculo, sólo hay que suprimirla para mostrarlas abiertas. El parabrisas viene aparte con los limpiadores incluidos.

Uno de los pocos inconvenientes que tiene este Tilly es el hecho de que las puertas y el capó vienen en una sola pieza con el resto de la carrocería, que por lo demás es una pieza realmente bien hecha. La pequeña zona de carga viene también de una pieza y en este caso la portezuela sí puede pegarse abierta o cerrada. El vehículo puede montarse con o sin toldo, que se compone de tres partes, dos para la cubierta (otra pequeña pega, porque hay que evitar que se vea la unión) y otra para el faldón trasero con la alternativa de montarlo cerrado o enrollado. Todas las piezas son semitransparentes de gran calidad en el detalle de arrugas y ventanas.

La hoja de calcas incluye numerales, estrellas y marcas de unidad para cuatro versiones, una de la la RAF y tres del Ejército. Una de éstas es supuestamente genérica, pero hay calcas para identificar el modelo como un vehículo de la 1ª, 6ª o 7ª División Acorazada británica. Además, hay una breve guía de pintura con las referencias de color de los Tillys en diferentes periodos de la guerra y escenarios. Con tantas opciones y ayuda, lo difícil será decidir cuál hacer. Las instrucciones aparecen en un folleto doblado verticalmente, un tanto incómodo para la mesa de trabajo, pero claro y exhaustivo.

Sin duda esta es una maqueta excelente que dará mucho juego y que gustará tanto a los modelistas de vehículos, como a los de aviones. Esperemos que Tamiya la edite pronto a 1/35, al igual que el Citroën 11CV.◊

Although it had been announced, the release of this kit in late 2008 was surprising and that was the least one could feel. This utility vehicle, so popular wherever the British forces were present in WWII, was nicknamed Tilly and manufactured by different firms: Austin, Hillman, Standard and Morris. Although similar in features and performance, every manufacturer gave the vehicle their own characteristics as it was developed from a civil car. In this case it is an Austin model judging from the bonnet shape and the front grill.

Tamiya have achieved to join their usual quality with a simple assembly into a really nice kit. This comprises one grey sprue with the main parts, a clear sprue for the lights and canvas cover, the body molded as one part, decals and instructions. Parts breakdown is quite simple but nicely detailed at the same time, given the scale and the actual size of this kit. Molding quality is fine with no flash and only a few marks in non-visible spots. Tamiya haven’t forgotten almost any detail, for example front fender lights and headlights are separate clear parts, tread pattern in tyres is superb and there’s even a tiny two-part petrol cap too.

Assembly will be quick and fun because there are no major fitting and sanding concerns. Following the instructions building starts in the underside. The chassis includes the body floor, so the only parts to glue are the exhaust pipe, rear and front springs and unpowered axle. Inside the cabin there are four single seats, the driver’s figure in typical British uniform and beret if you wish to include it, a gear lever, a small dashboard and a steering wheel. Side windows can be showed open or close by means of clear part B7 which is a single molding for the closed side windows that is glued to the ceiling of the cab. If you want to display the side windows open, you can just omit that part. The clear windscreen is a separate part with wipers molded on.

One of the few drawbacks of this Tilly is that doors and bonnet are molded closed in the body part. The floor of the rear body is also a separate part with a cargo door which can be displayed into the open or close position. Canvas cover is also optional and comes in two parts that meet in the middle (another drawback as this leaves a prominent centre joint) plus another optional part to show the access flap closed or rolled into the open position. Canvas parts are also clear and show quality details in shapes and flexible windows.

The decal sheet includes codes, stars and unit markings for four versions, one for the RAF and three of the Army. One of these is identified as generic in the instructions but there are decals to mark your model as belonging to either the 1st, 6th or 7th British Armored Divisions. The instructions also include a brief painting guide with the colours used by Tillys in different periods and theatres of the war. With so many options and help, the most difficult thing here will be to decide which option to build. Instructions come in a folded leaflet which is a bit inconvenient for a small workbench, but clear and easy to follow.

This is an excellent and versatile kit that will surely like both military and air modelers. I hope Tamiya will release a 1/35 brother soon as in the case of their Citroën 11CV.◊
