Bedford OX + Queen Mary semi-trailer (Airfix 1/76)

EL VEHÍCULO – THE VEHICLE

En 1935 el fabricante británico Bedford comenzó el diseño de modelos para la Oficina de Guerra. En 1939 los modelos más importantes eran tres: la series M, K y O. En su versión militar, la serie O difería de la civil en algunos cambios en el perfil descendente del capó, un morro plano que incorporaba los faros, un barra delante del radiador para protegerlo de golpes y ruedas simples, en lugar de dobles como la versión civil, en el eje trasero. Este camión se produjo en dos modelos, el OY y el OX, su derivado con menor distancia entre ejes. Ambos modelos se adaptaron a multitud de tareas: carga, transporte de combustible, cantinas móviles y hasta una versión blindada (Bedford OXA) de pocos ejemplares y dotada de un fusil contracarro, que se empleó sólo en Gran Bretaña en previsión de una invasión alemana. Bedford también exportó sus camiones a la Unión Soviética durante la guerra.

Uno de las misiones más importantes del Bedford OX fue su empleo como cabeza tractora del semi-remolque diseñado por la firma Taskers de Andover (Hampshire) para la RAF. El conjunto de camión más semi-remolque recibió el nombre de Queen Mary Trailer y estaba destinado a la recuperación y transporte de aviones averiados o derribados durante la guerra y posteriormente.

In 1935 the British car manufacturer Bedford started the design of trucks for the War Office. In 1939 the firm produced three military models, the series M, K and O. In its military version, the O series was different from the civil counterpart in the sloping profile of the bonnet, flat nose with headlights incorporated, a crash bar in front of the radiator to protect it against minor damage and single wheels in the rear axis instead of the two wheels of the civil version. The truck was produced in two basic models, the OY and OX, this latter being a short-wheelbase version of the OY. Both models were employed in a variety of tasks: general purpose, tankers, mobile canteens and even an armored version (Bedford OXA) fitted with an antitank rifle which was used only in Britain by the time a German invasion of England was considered imminent. Bedford also exported their OY and OX to the Soviet Union during the war.

Ona of the most important roles of the Bedford OX was its use as tractor for the semi-trailer built by Taskers of Andover (Hampshire) for the RAF. The combination of truck and semi-trailer was designated Queen Mary Trailer and was employed in the recovery and transport of damaged or downed aircraft in the war and for some time later.

LA MAQUETA – THE KIT

Esta es una maqueta más que veterana, según Scalemates la primera edición es de 1972, cuyo molde Airfix bien podría renovar algún día a una escala un pelín más grande para hacerla coincidir con aviones a 1/72. La caja contiene, además del Bedford OX y su remolque, un camión Thornicroft Amazon con grúa Coles, seis figuras (tres conductores, un policía de pie y dos motoristas), y una diminuta hoja de calcas con matrículas y un par de esteciles para el remolque.

El molde es bastante limpio y las simplificaciones, omisiones, grosores e inexactitudes se pueden pasar en general por alto si uno le concede la perspectiva del tiempo. La maqueta se monta bastante bien y sólo tiene algún problema en el ajuste de la cabina del camión. Lo peor de todo es la ausencia de plástico transparente para los cristales, que hay que fabricar si uno no quiere que el modelo parezca un triste juguetillo. Según avanzaba en el montaje, le añadí algunos detalles menores que faltaban: retrovisores, palanca de marchas, limpiaparabrisas, etc.

This is an Airfix oldie but not so goldie (according to Scalemates the first edition dates back from 1972 no less), and the tooling would need an update at a slightly bigger size to fit it in the wide range of aircraft kits available at 1/72 scale. Apart from the Bedford kit, the box contains a Thornicroft Amazon lorry with a Coles crane, five figures (two drivers, a standing military policeman and two motorcyclists) and a small decal sheet with RAF plates and a couple of stecils for the semi-trailer.

The tooling is quite clean and one can forgive some simplifications, omissions, mistakes and even the thickness in some parts considering the age of the kit. Both the OX and the semi-trailer are quite simple builds with only minor problems in the fitting of the Bedford cabin. The lack of clear parts for the OX windshield and windows is a clear flaw in the kit that one has to scratchbuild if you don’t want your model to look just a poor little toy. As I was progressing my build, I added some missing details: mirrors, wiper, gear lever, etc.

MONTAJE – ASSEMBLY

Pintura del interior con colores de Vallejo. Pese a que los OX conservados en museos llevan su interior en tonos verde claro, luego comprobé que los camiones OY iban del mismo color de la carrocería por dentro. Deduje por mi cuenta y riesgo que los OX de la RAF también deberían ir en RAF blue grey. Los cristales son de acetato recortados casi a medida y con resultado mediocre, suerte que a esta escala lucen menos. Una vez cerrada la cabina, le añadí un par de retrovisores y limpiaparabrisas de mi cosecha ya que la maqueta no los trae, al igual que la palanca de marchas.

I painted the cabin interior with Vallejo paints. Some OX trucks preserved in museums are painted in a light green colour similar to that interior green used in many WWII RAF aircraft, but I later checked the OYs had their interior painted in the same body colour, so I concluded the same could happen with RAF OXs but with the wartime RAF blue grey. The windows were made with acetate cut to size but I was not happy with the result. I was lucky the mistakes are not so evident at this scale. Once the cabin was closed, I added a couple of rearview mirrors and wipers which are missing in the kit, as well as the gear lever.

PINTURA – PAINTING

Pinté la maqueta en un gris azul de Model Air de Vallejo, un color bastante aproximado sin tener que hacer mezclas. Las calcas fueron como la seda.

I chose a Vallejo Model Air dark blue grey as an approximate colour to avoid mixing paints. Decals went as a glove.

La base del remolque lleva simuladas las planchas de madera mediante líneas en relieve que lijé y volví a grabar. Después pinté la madera desnuda con colores de Vallejo.

The semi-trailer wood planking is simulated with raised lines in the kit. I sanded the lines and rescribed them, then I painted the wooden floor with Vallejo colours.

Empecé los desgastes aclarando con gris y blanco muy diluido el techo de la carlinga y el capó del Beddie. Luego empleé óleos con profusión en dos fases, la primera para decolorar el gris y la siguiente para los óxidos y suciedades. Unos toques con óleo color asfalto representan las manchas de aceite y combustible. Un poco de pigmento por las zonas bajas (sin pasarse), acaban esta parte de la maqueta a falta de retoques en los neumáticos.

I started the weathering on the Beddie’s cabin roof and bonnet with white and clear grey oils. Then I used more oils in two steps: the first one to fade the grey base and the second for rust and dirt. A few touches with asphalt oil show grease and fuel stains. I tried to finish off this stage by adding a bit of earth and dust pigment gathered from dusty roads, but tyres still needed a few touches more.

Los siguiente fue terminar de definir el remolque. La madera la pinté con varios colores de Vallejo a pincel, incluso con algún tono verdoso en la parte posterior para simular zonas más envejecidas por la humedad.

The following step was to finish the trailer. Wood was brush painted with a bunch of Vallejo acrylics, I even used green shades to simulate damp old wood.
