Siempre me he sentido atraído por estos cacharros de dos planos algo toscos, que para la Segunda Guerra Mundial más parecían aviones de recreo que de combate. También me parece que desde el punto de vista de la representación artística (que de eso también hay algo en el modelismo), dan mucho más juego que otros modelos más estilizados y supermodernos.
Esta pequeña joya de 53 piezas de Fujimi va distribuida en cuatro bandejas con las calcas y los transparentes. La primera impresión del modelo, si soy sincero, es algo decepcionante, pues uno espera más piezas y más grandes. Más tarde se repara en que lo que uno tiene ante sus narices es una maqueta excelente y delicada en sus menores detalles. No hay más que ver lo bien moldeados que están los flotadores auxiliares para darse cuenta de que este avión no necesita nada más, con lo que hay en la caja basta y sobra. Y sobra porque Fujimi da la posibilidad de ensamblar el aparato con los flotadores completos, en cuyo caso habremos de montarlo en su carro de transporte, o bien disponemos de medios flotadores para ponerlo sobre agua. Esta última opción es muy tentadora para un diorama, por eso decía antes que este tipo de aviones suelen dar más de sí.
El interior del aparato está correctamente fabricado, aunque en esta ocasión los paneles de mandos van pintados y no simulados con la socorrida calca. El motor Mitsubishi es de lo mejor de la maqueta, los cilindros están muy bien trabajados y se debe ver muy bien cuando esté montado. En general todas las piezas tienen un buen diseño y no parece que vaya a haber problemas con el encaje. En este sentido, hay que destacar las alas que tienen un detalle magnífico. A mi juicio, el único problema importante que a priori nos puede plantear el Pete de Fujimi es que tendremos que planificar muy bien el proceso montaje-pintura si no queremos que algunas piezas ya ensambladas puedan molestarnos a la hora de pintar. Por lo demás, siguiendo estas sencillas instrucciones no deben plantearse mayores dificultades.
Las calcas son correctas y suficientes dado que los tres esquemas de pintura que se ofrecen de diferentes bases navales japonesas no difieren del clásico de la Marina Imperial, a excepción de una de ellas con el flotador principal completamente en gris en lugar de verde y gris. Como extra, si puede considerarse así, hay un par de bombas de 250 kilos bajo las alas y el detalle de la casa de indicar la longitud exacta de las diferentes riostras para comodidad del modelista, así nos evitaremos pasar media tarde tomando medidas.
Hay que valorar muy positivamente esta maqueta pues, a pesar de la escala, los detalles destacan en el conjunto, cosa que no siempre ocurre. Aunque no es un modelo particularmente apto para principiantes, es más que recomendable de tener en cualquier colección de aviones de hélice donde siempre llamará la atención.◊
I have always felt attracted by these old-fashioned biplanes that were relics by the time of WWII. However, from an artistic viewpoint they can also give modelers more opportunities than other stylized and more modern kits.
This Fujimi little jewel has 53 parts in four grey sprues with another clear sprue and the decal sheet. The first-sight impression was rather disappointing, as I hoped to find more and bigger parts. Later I realized that what I had in front of me was an excellent kit even in the smallest details. If you just look at the well-shaped wing floats, you will agree that there is more than enough inside the box because you can assemble the seaplane either with complete floats (in which case you have a dolly for transport), or with waterline floats ready for a diorama. Stranded on a beach or on water this model must look really fine.
The interior is correctly made, although there are no decals for the instrument panel which you will have to paint this time. The Mitsubishi engine is one of the best things of the model, the cylinders are finely detailed and they will surely look great inside the nose. In general, all the parts are correct and it is not likely that we can have assembly problems. In this sense I’d like to mention that the wings have an outstanding level of detail. I think the only problem we may have when assembling this cool Pete is that we will have to plan the assembly and painting carefully if we do not want to have areas where it will be difficult to paint. For the rest, following these clear instructions I do not think you will find any other problem.
The decals are correct and enough if we consider that the three colour schemes of different Japanese naval bases which are shown are not different from the standard scheme of the Japanese Navy aircraft. Only one of these Petes had the main float white instead of green and grey. As an extra, if we can consider it so, the plane undercarriage consists of two 250 kg bombs and the company has had the compliment of including the exact length of the wing struts. This way we will avoid the pain of measuring them.
I think we must rate this kit very high because despite the scale, the details are exceptional, and this is not so common as one may sometimes think. Of course, this model is not very adequate for absolute beginners, but it is quite recommendable for your WWII collection.◊
