VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Reedición mejorada de la maqueta original con más calcas y opciones de pintura. Tanto sola, como en compañía de un vehículo, es una maqueta de tema poco usual para quienes busquen alternativas a lo de siempre. Requiere cierta experiencia en pintura de vehículos civiles.

Tengo la intuición, muy probablemente equivocada, que pocos modelistas navales hayan terminado alguna vez, o tengan en inventario, una maqueta como esta. Por el contrario, puede que más de un aficionado a los vehículos civiles la tenga ya en la vitrina o en el almacén. Investigando muy superficialmente sobre este tema, he encontrado maquetas similares tanto de Revell (casa matriz norteamericana, no la alemana), como de AMT. Puede haber más fabricantes, naturalmente, pero estos dos parecen ser los que más se han prodigado con el tema desde hace décadas si vemos sus catálogos. En ambos fabricantes, las maquetas de lanchas motoras han aparecido también junto a vehículos. Así, por ejemplo, Revell también ha sacado esta misma maqueta en combinación con un Chevy Stepside del 65.
Esta Hot Rod Hydro es una reedición de 2014 de la maqueta original de los años 70. En esta ocasión, Revell le ha hecho algunos cambios. Las novedades comienzan con el nombre, en las ediciones anteriores se denominaba Hemi-Hydro, y siguen con las instrucciones, las calcas e incluso el color del plástico. En lo esencial, la maqueta es igual a la primera, pero tiene más opciones de calcas y pintura que sus antecesoras.
La maqueta
La caja contiene un bastidor de piezas cromadas, dos bastidores de piezas blancas, más algunas piezas similares separadas de ellos, el remolque, que ha sido aprovechado como bastidor para moldear algunas de sus piezas, dos neumáticos de vinilo, una varilla metálica, la hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. La caja anuncia que las piezas de plástico proceden de Revell en Illinois, los neumáticos de China y las calcas de Italia (¿Cartograf?).
Las piezas están moldeadas en un plástico de cierta rigidez y dureza, que no es tan fácil de trabajar. Dicho esto, también hay que señalar que el molde, pese a su edad, está muy limpio. No encuentro rebabas y sólo algunas pocas marcas visibles en las aletas de la quilla, el timón y el perfil deflector situado a popa. Desgraciadamente, todas ellas son piezas cromadas, por ello hay que decidir entre dejarlas así o quitar las marcas y pintar las piezas de otro color.
La maqueta no tiene alternativas importantes de montaje, tan sólo se puede poner un banco plegable en posición abierta o cerrada, o emplear los esquíes que Revell ha incluido como complemento. Sin embargo, en lo relativo a pintura hay en realidad tantas opciones como el modelista sea capaz de imaginar, además de las descritas en las instrucciones, ya que esta lancha parece carecer de referente real.
Motora
El casco está dividido en mitades. Las superficies externas son completamente lisas, mientras que las internas muestran refuerzos transversales y un texturizado muy tenue que simula madera. Hay marcas en los lados internos, pero no deben preocuparnos, ya que serán tapadas por las dos piezas que replican el forro interior. Bajo la quilla sólo hay que colocar dos pequeñas aletas, y en la popa, el timón y un perfil deflector provisto de numerosos soportes, todos ellos piezas cromadas.
El interior del casco está conformado por dos largueros longitudinales sobre los cuales van asentados diversos elementos, como los asientos o el motor. La mitad trasera del casco incluye dos pequeñas cubiertas laterales con suelo texturizado, el tanque de combustible, realizado en dos piezas cromadas, y el brazo del timón. También han de colocarse el arranque del motor y su eje, y la bancada del motor.
El motor V8, que simula el de un vehículo terrestre, lo considero bien detallado en general, con diferentes piezas que replican el bloque motor, compuesto del cárter, las tapas de balancines y cilindros, más el magneto, la cubierta del motor, el filtro de aceite, el motor de arranque, el colector de admisión y la cubierta del volante motor. Algunas de estas piezas están cromadas, por ello hay que añadirlas tras pintar el resto. Los carburadores y toberas superiores de admisión vienen por separado y también cromadas, así como los escapes.
La mitad anterior del casco lleva separada la cubierta de proa moldeada con un parco salpicadero. Sobre este aparecen tres pequeños indicadores en relieve para los que también hay calcas. El volante viene cromado y con este aspecto parece poco realista. Ambos asientos están moldeados en una pieza y muestran un acolchado deportivo bien simulado. Hay dos juegos de calcas opcionales, en rojo y azul, para realzar este forro. Un panel separado tras los asientos muestra un tercer banco orientado a popa, que podemos plegar o no mediante bisagras.
Remolque
El remolque se compone de un bastidor de una pieza que incluye los guardabarros. Hay dos amortiguadores de ballesta en piezas aparte y horadados para meter la varilla metálica que hace de eje entre ruedas. Las ruedas poseen llantas en mitades cromadas y neumáticos de vinilo encajados a presión en ellas. Los neumáticos vienen sueltos, sin restos de fabricación y detalle aceptable en las bandas de rodadura. He incluido estas piezas en lo peor de la maqueta, no tanto por su factura, como por el material.
Hay diversos rulos cromados sobre el remolque que permiten la carga y descarga de la embarcación y algunos soportes laterales con suelo texturizado, que no veo muy necesario emplear. Por delante del remolque hay que pegar la rueda delantera con su soporte, más un pequeño cabrestante con manivela. Revell incluyó también un enganche para colocarlo en el vehículo tractor que elijamos. Como toque deportivo, tenemos un par de esquíes con calcas decorativas que imitan madera y motivos náuticos.
La amplia hoja de calcas contiene alternativas para imitar la cubierta de proa de madera, el salpicadero, numerales, matrículas, colores para los asientos, estarcidos y adornos para la cubierta y el casco. Los motivos tienen aspecto fino y acabado brillante, y no muestran exceso de soporte. Aunque las instrucciones son claras sobre cuáles emplear, en muchas podemos buscar diferentes combinaciones de motivos decorativos para personalizar el modelo.
El folleto de instrucciones tiene tamaño A4 y sus 12 páginas están impresas en blanco y negro. Contiene una lista de colores genéricos, una lista completa para identificar las piezas, 14 secuencias de montaje y perfiles para pintar y poner calcas. Tanto los pasos del montaje como los perfiles son muy claros. A diferencia de ediciones anteriores, esta caja incluye tres motoras en diferentes terminaciones y con calcas alternativas para algunas zonas, como la cubierta de proa o los indicadores del salpicadero.
A los que ya lleven algunos vehículos civiles a las espaldas, esta maqueta no les va a suponer retos especiales. Por otro lado, considero que algunas piezas cromadas quedarían más realistas en otro color, como el depósito de carburante o el volante, pero esto siempre es elección del modelista. El que la lleva, la entiende. En definitiva, para los que busquen algo bien diferente, la maqueta me parece una alternativa realmente fuera del circuito de lo ya visto tantas veces, por muy popular que sea. No es una maqueta de iniciación porque necesita cierta experiencia con los acabados de pintura, y por ello no la recomiendo a los muy inexpertos.◊
I have the intuition, most likely wrong, that few naval modellers have ever finished, or keep in their stash, a kit like this. On the contrary, it may be that more than one fan of civilian vehicles already has it on the shelf or warehouse. Investigating carelessly on this subject, I have found similar kits from both Revell (North American parent company, not the German one), and AMT. There may be more manufacturers, of course, but these two seem to have lavished the most on the subject for decades if we look at their catalogs. In both manufacturers, motorboat kits have also been released coupled with vehicles. Thus, for example, Revell have also released this same boat with a ´65 Chevy Stepside.
This Hot Rod Hydro is a 2014 reissue of the original kit from the 70s, but this time Revell have made some changes. Changes begin with the name, it was called Hemi-Hydro in previous boxes, and continue with the instructions, the decals and even the plastic colour. Essentially, the kit is the same as the first one, but it has more options for decals and painting.
The kit
The box contains a frame of chrome parts, two sprues of white parts, plus some similar parts molded apart, the trailer, which has been used as a frame to mold some of its pieces, two vinyl tires, a metal rod, the decal sheet and the instructions. The box announces that the plastic parts come from Revell in Illinois, the tires from China and the decals from Italy (Cartograf?).
Plastic is rigid and on the hard side, not that easy to work. That said, it should also be noted that this old tool comes very clean. I find no flash and only a few visible marks on the keel fins, the rudder and the aft cavitation plate. Unfortunately, all of them are chrome pieces, so you must decide between leaving them like that or removing the marks and painting the pieces in a different colour.
The kit does not have important assembly alternatives, you can only pose a bench in the open or closed position or use the skis that Revell have included as a complement. However, when it comes to painting, there are as many choices as the modeller can imagine, in addition to those shown in the instructions, as this boat seems to lack a real referent.
Motorboat
The hull is divided in halves. The external surfaces are smooth, while the internal ones show cross ribs and a very light texturing that simulates wood. There are marks on the inner sides, but we shouldn’t be concerned as they will be covered by the two pieces that replicate the inner lining. You just must attach two small fins under the keel, and the rudder and cavitation plate, which is provided with a bunch of trim tab adjusters, all of them chrome parts.
The hull interior is limited by two lengthwise frames on which some pieces are attached, such as the seats and the engine. The rear hull half includes two small side decks with texturized floor, the fuel tank, made of two chrome pieces, and the tiller arm. The engine starter and its shaft, and the drive support must also be glued at this step.
The V8 engine, which simulates that of a land vehicle, looks nicely detailed overall, with different parts that replicate the engine block, comprising a crankcase, the rocker and cylinder covers, plus the magneto, the engine cover, the oil filter, starter motor, intake manifold and flywheel cover. Some of these pieces are chrome-plated, so you must attach them after painting the rest. The carburetors and stacks come separately and are chrome pieces, as well as the exhausts.
The forward hull half has a separate foredeck molded with the dashboard. This shows three small, raised gadgets, but there are also different decals to render them. The steering wheel comes chromed and looks unrealistic as this. Both seats are molded in one piece and feature well simulated sport upholstery. There are two optional decal sets, in red and blue, to enhance the seats. A separate panel behind the seats shows a third bench looking aft provided with hinges, which we can fold or not.
Trailer
The trailer consists of a one-piece frame that includes the fenders. There are two spring shock absorbers in separate pieces and drilled to insert the metal rod for the axle between the wheels. The wheels have rims in chrome halves and vinyl tires that are to be press-fitted onto them. Tires come loose, with no rubber flash and acceptable tread detail. I have included these pieces in the worst part of the kit, not so much for the quality as for the media.
There are several chrome rollers on the trailer that allow loading and unloading the boat and some side supports with textured floor, which may well be left out. In front of the trailer, you must attach the front wheel with its leg, plus a small winch with a crank. Revell also included a hitch to attach the towing vehicle we choose. As a sporty touch, we have a pair of skis with decorative decals that simulate wood and nautical motifs.
The large decal sheet contains alternatives for the wooden foredeck, dashboard, numerals, license plates, seat colors, stencils, and hull and deck trims. Decals look thin and have a glossy finish, and do not show too much carrier film. Though the instructions are clear about which ones to use, we can choose different decal combinations to customize the kit. Unlike previous releases, this box includes three motorboats in different finishes with alternative decals for some areas, such as the foredeck or the dashboard indicators.
The instruction booklet is A4 size and has 12 pages printed in black and white. It contains a list of generic colours, a complete list to identify the parts, 14 assembly sequences and profiles for painting and setting decals. Both exploded views and profiles are very clear.
For those who already have some civilian vehicles under their bellies, this kit is not going to pose any special challenges. On the other hand, I believe that some chrome parts would be more realistic in another color, such as the fuel tank or the steering wheel, but this is always the modeller’s choice. In short, for those looking for something very different, the kit seems an ideal alternative far from what has already been seen so many times, no matter how popular it is. It is not a starter kit because it needs some experience with paint finishes, and therefore I do not recommend it to the very inexperienced.◊
