Revell debe ser uno de los mejores fabricantes de maquetas de barcos no militares a una escala tan minúscula. Si se elige bien el motivo, un barco lo suficientemente grande en la realidad que dé un tamaño decente a esta escala, se fabrica mediante un molde que no desdeñe el detalle y se consigue un precio más que razonable, el éxito en este hueco modelístico está casi asegurado. Esta maqueta en concreto es del año 2010, pero Revell ha editado otros barcos modernos a igual escala, entre otros los cruceros Queen Elizabeth 2, Queen Mary 2, y Aida Blue, versión reducida del mismo buque a escala 1/400 de su catálogo, y los ferry-cruceros noruegos MS Midnatsol y MS Trollfjord, aparecidos más recientemente. Puede decirse que con este Color Fantasy, Revell parece haber dejado, temporalmente al menos, los cruceros clásicos por otros buques más modernos.
La maqueta consta en realidad de 41 piezas de plástico blanco y otras cuatro corresponden a la peana. El contenido de la caja consiste en cinco pequeños bastidores, una hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico es de buena calidad, tiende más a duro que a blando pero se trabaja bastante bien. Las piezas están muy bien moldeadas, pese a que alguna de ellas, afortunadamente pocas, son bastante pequeñas, sin rebabas ni marcas evidentes excepto en la parte inferior del casco, de reducidas dimensiones y relativamente fáciles de eliminar. El ajuste de las piezas de todos los tamaños varía de bueno a muy bueno, lo cual simplifica aún más el montaje. El detalle general es extraordinariamente bueno para la escala. Revell ha representado con acierto la multitud de accesos, ventanas, escotillas y ojos de buey del casco y la sobreestructura, así como muchos otros evidentes en la cubierta y torres.
Acertadamente en mi opinión, Revell proporciona el casco de una pieza, tan sólo a falta de la popa, que viene en pieza separada. El detalle es muy bueno y las formas están muy bien conseguidas, especialmente a proa donde las curvaturas son difíciles de copiar. En la parte inferior, como decía antes, hay un par de marcas que quitar. Dos mamparos transversales proporcionan algo más de solidez interna a esta pieza. No están de más, ya que los lados del casco resultan bastante planos y lo normal es que tiendan a doblarse hacia adentro si se los presiona demasiado fuerte. Tanto a proa como a popa quedan bien representadas las compuertas de acceso a las bodegas de carga de vehículos. Al casco sólo hay que añadirle los timones laterales, los de popa y las hélices con sus respectivos ejes y soportes.
La relativamente complicada superestructura ha sido simplificada con ingenio y sin perder detalle. Los lados de la misma son dos piezas completas excepto a proa. Al igual que en el casco, la multitud de ventanas, accesos y camarotes están brillantemente representados. Aprovechando las pequeñas y alargadas cubiertas laterales, se dispone del espacio necesario para poder pegar ambos lados de la superestructura al casco y a la pieza de popa. Añadir posteriormente la parte frontal de esta especie de caja es lo más sencillo. El encaje es muy bueno, sin embargo quedan algunas líneas de unión que enmasillar e imprimar pues resultan demasiado evidentes bajo el color blanco de la pintura.
Lo que podríamos llamar segunda cubierta consiste en una sola pieza alargada que cierra el hueco de la superestructura principal. El detalle, de nuevo, es muy bueno, con excelente representación incluso de las escalerillas de acceso a la cubierta de popa, que puede ser convertida en helipuerto provisional en el buque real. Sobre esta pieza hay que añadir dos más que se deben montar por separado. En la zona de popa, la airosa torre de las chimeneas se compone exteriormente de un entramado de láminas horizontales paralelas y huecas en la realidad, pero que la maqueta trae macizas. Parece razonable que Revell las haya fabricado así dado el tamaño de la escala y lo que nos ofrece la maqueta en otros aspectos. La parte frontal de esta pieza, que viene separada en mitades, deja también una línea de unión difícil de eliminar debido al relieve de las rejillas delanteras de ventilación. En la zona de proa hay que añadir la característica torre redondeada, que en la realidad es una sala de observación para el pasaje, pues el auténtico puente de mando se encuentra dos niveles por debajo de esta. La torre posee también una digna representación de los distintos radares y sensores instalados sobre ella. Algunas de las piezas son realmente diminutas y hay que tener cuidado al manipularlas.
Las calcas están impresas en una hoja fina y alargada. Son un producto del propio fabricante, aunque impresas en Italia, acaso un encargo para Cartograf o Zanchetti. Aunque su aspecto es bueno y los motivos aparecen bien representados con colores saturados, algunas no parecen todo lo finas que debieran. La hoja lleva líneas y rótulos principalmente para el casco y la base.
Las instrucciones están impresas en un folleto de ocho páginas de tamaño A5. Constan de diez etapas generales de montaje y una guía de pintura y colocación de calcas en la última página, además de un breve resumen histórico y técnico sobre el buque y referencias de color de la gama de Revell, aunque la mayor parte de los colores poseen equivalencias directas en otros fabricantes. Las indicaciones de montaje son claras y fáciles de seguir.
Creo que los aficionados a los barcos a escalas pequeñas disfrutarán de esta maqueta. Me atrevería incluso a recomendar cualquier otro buque de este tipo del catálogo del fabricante. Revell ha conseguido mantener un número de piezas reducido a un módico precio sin comprometer el detalle.◊
Revell must be one of the best manufacturers of non-military ship kits at this tiny scale. If you choose an adequate subject matter, select a ship big enough in real life to have a decent size at the scale, you use a detailed tooling and keep a reasonable price, I bet success is granted in this modelling gap. This specific kit dates back from 2010, but Revell have also released other modern ships at this scale, like the cruisers Queen Elizabeth 2, Queen Mary 2, and Aida Blue, a reduced version of the same 1/400 ship on their catalogue, and the Norwegian ferry-cruisers MS Midnatsol y MS Trollfjord which appeared in 2013. It seems Revell has left, temporarily at least, the path of classic ocean liners and passenger cruisers to release more modern ships.
The kit really comprises 41 parts in white plastic because the other four belong to the stand. The small box contains five sprues, a decal sheet and the instructions. Plastic has a good quality, it is more on the harder side than on the soft one but it is very easy to work. Parts are well moulded despite some of them, luckily only a few, are really tiny. They show no flash or evident marks except on the bottom side of the hull, which are not large and can be easily sanded and filled. Fitting of parts ranges from good to excellent, which means assembly will not be delayed. Overall detail is outstanding for the scale. Revell have wisely portrayed the handfuls of windows, hatches, bull’s eyes on the hull and superstructure as well as others which are not so evident on decks and bridge.
Revell provides the complete hull in one part except for the stern side, which is a separate part. Detail is quite good and shapes are finely reproduced, especially in the bow, where curves are normally difficult to copy at the scale from the real thing. As I said before, there are a couple of marks to eliminate on the bottom hull. Two transverse bulkheads provide more internal strength to this part. They are really needed, as the hull sides are fairly flat and they tend to bend inward if you press them too hard. Fore and aft the access gates to the cargo area are well represented. The only parts to be added to the hull are the side and stern rudders and the propellers with their shafts and holders.
The relatively complicated superstructure has also been wisely simplified without losing detail. The sides are two complete parts excluding their forward section. As in the hull, the multitude of windows and cabins are well represented to scale. The long side catwalks provide the space required to glue both sides of the superstructure to the hull. The boxlike structure is easily finished with the addition of the front part. The fit is very good, though there are some lines to fill and prime as they are too evident under the white paint color.
What we might call second deck consists of a single lengthened part that closes the top of the main superstructure. The detail, again, is very good, with excellent representation of even the aft deck ladders. This aft deck can be converted into a provisional heliport in the real ship if necessary. There are two sections to be assembled separately. In the stern, the elegant funnel comprises a network of parallel horizontal plates in the real ship that the kit shows solid. It seems reasonable that Revell have made them so if you consider the size of the kit and the detail it provides in other aspects. This section comes in two halves and the joining line is quite visible and difficult to fill due to the engraved front vents. In the bow area there is the rounded observation lounge to be added. The tower also has a decent representation of the various radars and sensors installed on it. Some of the pieces are really tiny and you have to be careful when handling them.
Decals are printed on a long thin sheet. They are a Revell production but printed in Italy, probably by Cartograf or Zanchetti but the provider is not mentioned. Although they look fine and labels and lines are well represented with saturated colours, some of them are not as thin as I would wish. The sheet comprises lines and names of ship and company for the hull and base for the most part.
Instructions are printed in an eight-page A5 leaflet. They comprise ten main assembly steps and a painting and decaling guide on the last page, as well as the usual technical and historical data about the ship and paint reference in Revell’s own range. Most paint colours can be also found in other manufacturers. Exploded views are clear and easy to follow.
I think most fans of this true Braille scale of ship kits will enjoy this Color Fantasy. I would suggest a bigger sister for it, say a 1/700 or 1/400 kit, and would even dare to recommend other Revell ship kits at the scale. They have managed to keep a reduced number of parts without compromising detail at a reasonable price.◊
