Es la última edición del veterano Enterprise de Tamiya. La maqueta en general es muy buena, y es que el fabricante ha echado el resto, más aún tratándose de un buque tan conocido como este. El modelo viene en tres bolsas donde encontramos por un lado el casco, la base y la cubierta de vuelo. Otra bolsa contiene dos grandes grapas de piezas y la última alberga la dotación aérea. Además encontramos el contrapeso metálico típico de los Waterline e instrucciones en inglés y japonés. No puedo decir si las dimensiones son las correctas para esta escala, lo que sí está bien conseguido es el perfil. El casco viene muy bien detallado, así como la cubierta. Aunque sólo el elevador de popa viene abierto para que el hangar pueda verse, los otros dos podrán cortarse sin gran dificultad si se desea abrirlos también. Las piezas menores vienen muy bien hechas, con sólo algunos puntos de eyector. Se ha puesto especial interés en detallar todas las pasarelas y sus elementos a babor y estribor. El hangar sólo se ha detallado a popa, justo debajo de la apertura del elevador. La artillería antiaérea es quizás el talón de Aquiles de la maqueta. Las piezas mayores, situadas a proa y popa todavía se asemejan algo a las del Enterprise real, pero las de cubierta y las más pequeñas, situadas a ambos costados, no están bien conseguidas. Se ha preferido proporcionar hilo de cobre para realizarles los cañones, en lugar de moldearlas aparte. En este apartado, quizás fuese conveniente sustituirlas todas por fotograbados.
La isla y la chimenea son correctas, pero convendría revisar los mástiles y radares, puesto que dependiendo de la época en que queramos representar a nuestro Enterprise, éstos pueden cambiar. Lo mejor quizá, de nuevo unos buenos fotograbados. La dotación aérea la componen doce aparatos de todos los modelos más usuales con los que el portaaviones operó durante la guerra (Hellcats, Corsairs, Helldivers y Avengers) realizados en plástico azul oscuro. Una pequeña hoja incluye las calcas de las insignias.
Por último, en lo referente a las instrucciones, presentan un resumen histórico más largo del habitual (el buque bien lo merece). Los pasos de construcción son sólo seis, pero esto no debe hacernos pensar que será una tarea breve, pues hay que ir construyendo y pintando del interior hacia el exterior. Antes de montar la cubierta de vuelo, deberemos haber pintado y terminado el hangar y el casco completo. Lo último, como es lógico, será el montaje de la isla. La pintura es otro aspecto que habría que mejorar pues sólo se muestra un buque «neutro», pintado en gris oscuro y cubierta de color madera. Una breve referencia nos indica que a partir de 1944 todo se pintó de azul oscuro. En este sentido, y en algunos otros, los recientes modelos de Trumpeter a la misma escala están a años luz.
Si es siempre recomendable estudiar bien las instrucciones antes de acometer cualquier modelo, en este es sin duda imprescindible. Por ello, este Enterprise requiere cierto grado de experiencia, y no es aconsejable para iniciarse con los Waterline.◊
This is Tamiya most recent edition of the veteran Enterprise. The kit is quite good, and that is because the manufacturer has tried to do his best, even more with such a famous ship as this. There are three plastic bags inside the box. One contains the hull, the base and the deck. You find another for two long sprues and finally a smaller one has the aircraft. There are also the usual ballast and Japanese and English instructions.
I can’t say if the dimensions are correct for the scale, but certainly the profile is unmistakably that of the Big E. The hull is very thoroughly detailed and also the deck. Although there is only one elevator open astern for the hangar to be seen, the other two can be trimmed if you like. The smaller parts are well moulded too, with only some unavoidable ejector pins. An effort has been made to detail all the starboard and port catwalks. The interior hangar is also detailed astern, just above the open elevator.
The AA guns are perhaps the main drawback. The larger guns are rather similar to those on the real Enterprise, but the smaller ones on deck and the sides are poor. You are provided with a long copper wire to build the nozzles of the smallest machine-guns. I think it should have been better to have them moulded apart. Anyway, a good PE set can solve this mistake. The island and funnel are correct but the radars and masts should be revised because depending on the period we want to show our carrier, these could change. Again, a good PE set can be necessary (after all, the ship deserves it). The aircraft included are twelve navy blue plastic units showing all the most famous warplanes that served on board during the war (Hellcats, Corsairs, Helldivers and Avengers). A tiny sheet includes decals for them.
Finally, as regards the instructions, they show a longer historical summary than usual and six assembly steps. This should not make us think the kit will be such an easy task because you have to build and paint from the inside. Before you assemble the deck, you have to build and paint the hangar and the hull. The last thing to assemble, of course, is the island. The colour reference is another thing to improve, since you are only shown a «neutral» ship painted in dark grey and wood colour. Just a brief reference tells us the ship was painted overall dark blue from 1944 onwards. In this aspect, and a few others, the recent 1/700 Trumpeter kits are years ahead of this.
If it is always advisable to read the instructions carefully and plan your work beforehand, this is even more important here. For this, this Enterprise needs some experience with Waterlines and I think it is not recommendable for absolute beginners.◊
