VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Es difícil encontrarle algo malo a esta buena maqueta. Está bien detallada por dentro y fuera y no parece difícil de montar.

La maqueta
Si algún fabricante ha destacado últimamente por traer al plástico maquetas de vehículos japoneses de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en esta escala pequeña ese ha sido IBG Models. Hoy traigo a estas páginas el camión 917t en versión del Ejército japonés. El vehículo fue hasta cierto punto un trasunto del Ford modelo 1938 fabricado por Isuzu como evolución del modelo TX40. El camión pesaba 3 toneladas y podía transportar hasta una tonelada y media de carga con su motor de 52 hp. a una respetable velocidad máxima de 75 km/h. El modelo fue empleado por el Ejército japonés a lo largo de toda la Guerra Mundial.
IBG ya había hecho anteriormente una versión alemana de este vehículo, por lo que ambas maquetas comparten un bastidor, sin embargo la cabina, la caja de carga, los guardabarros traseros y los estribos son específicos de la versión japonesa.
La caja contienen seis bastidores de piezas, entre ellos uno transparente, una plancha de fotograbados, las calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico está bien moldeado y las piezas vienen en general bastante limpias. Algunas presentan pequeños cilindros del expulsor fácilmente eliminables y sólo hay marcas en la cara inferior de los guardabarros y en la cara interna del panel trasero de la cabina. Ninguna será evidente al terminar el modelo. Algunas piezas son bastante finas y debe extremarse el cuidado al sacarlas de los bastidores. El detalle general me parece bastante bueno y con sobresaliente definición en algunas zonas.
El montaje se centra en tres subconjuntos principales: el chasis por un lado, la cabina y el morro por otro, y finalmente la caja de carga.
Motor
IBG ha incluido en esta maqueta un motor bastante completo que está formado por un bloque motor de una pieza con el filtro de aire y la bomba de agua unidos a esta pieza en su parte superior. Las tapas de balancines son dobles y están situadas a los lados del bloque. Hay varias piezas separadas para los manguitos del radiador, la bomba de aceite, el alternador y las poleas con correa algo gruesa, y el ventilador de fotograbado. El radiador, que muestra un detalle excelente para esta escala, viene separado lo mismo que el tubo de escape, moldeado en una pieza con el silenciador.
Chasis, transmisión y ruedas
El bastidor es de una sola pieza fabricada con todos los travesaños excepto el último y una sección del árbol de la transmisión detallada con las juntas cardan. El paragolpes viene por separado, lo mismo que los enganches traseros de fotograbado.
El eje delantero dispone de ballestas, barra estabilizadora y barras de torsión muy finas y delicadas. El trasero está moldeado con el diferencial y lleva igualmente las ballestas separadas y finas barras de torsión. Entre ambos hay que añadir el árbol de la transmisión.
Los tambores de freno son diferentes en ambos ejes y vienen separados. Las ruedas me parecen excelentes. Los huecos de las llantas están bien perfilados y el detalle de los bujes es muy definido para la escala. Los neumáticos tienen el dibujo bien representado tanto en los bordes como en la banda de rodadura.
Cabina
El espacio interior está compuesto por un techo, un suelo moldeado con la base del asiento, un panel trasero detallado con el respaldo, una ventanilla transparente y dos fusiles dispuestos sobre el asiento. El panel tiene marcas de eyector, dos de ellas en la parte superior que serán tapadas por los fusiles y otras dos en la inferior que serán invisibles tras el asiento.
El panel delantero está fabricado con el marco del parabrisas, que es una pieza transparente no demasiado gruesa. La pieza muestra unos pedales diminutos moldeados sobre el suelo. Encontramos también varias piezas más que representan las palancas de marchas y freno, el tablero de instrumentos, con los indicadores en relieve, el volante y la columna de dirección.
Las puertas vienen separadas y carecen de ventanillas, pero la moldura externa y el acolchado interno son bastante buenos. También hay un par de barras exteriores de fotograbado y retrovisores en piezas separadas.
Carrocería y caja de carga
El morro viene separado en dos lados, el capó y la parrilla frontal. Los lados están bien perfilados y muestran molduras finas. La parrilla es algo gruesa pero la cara externa está bien detallada, incluso con la estrella característica de los vehículos del Ejército japonés.
Los guardabarros delanteros están bien moldeados con los estribos hasta la longitud de la cabina y los traseros con el resto de los estribos. Ambas piezas no son demasiado finas, pero el grosor me parece dentro de los aceptable. El morro cuenta con dos faros de una pieza y la placa de matrícula de fotograbado.
La caja de carga se compone de un bastidor de soporte formado por largueros y travesaños en una sola pieza. Los lados y el suelo de la caja vienen separados y muestran buen detalle en el grabado de las planchas de madera por ambos lados. La placa de matrícula trasera también es de fotograbado y los guardabarros están detallados con cajas de herramientas más un soporte de fotograbado para contener botellas de agua o aceite del motor que IBG ha fabricado de plástico transparente.
Figura
IBG ha incluido la figura del conductor de una pieza salvo los brazos separados. El soldado viste uniforme tropical, a juzgar por la gorra y el cubrenuca, y tiene los brazos apoyados en el volante. El detalle del uniforme y las polainas no es demasiado bueno, ni tampoco el del rostro. No obstante, la figura no es mala del todo y no desentonará con el camión si deseamos usarla.
Calcas
La hoja contiene matrículas, numerales y marcas tácticas. Las calcas tienen apariencia fina y bastante nitidez. Las instrucciones señalan que uno de los juegos de matrículas pertenecieron al camión que el artista japonés Tarō Okamoto condujo durante la guerra. Curioseando sobre este artista ya fallecido, me entero que fue un destacado referente en el arte de vanguardia en su país ya antes de la guerra. En 1942 fue llamado a filas y enviado a China, donde llegó a estar prisionero durante unos años hasta su regreso a Japón en 1946.
Instrucciones
El folleto de instrucciones tiene tamaño A4 y consta de ocho páginas impresas a color en papel satinado. Contiene un plano numerado de piezas, una tabla de colores con equivalencias de Tamiya, Vallejo, Hataka, Life Color y AK Interactive, trece secuencias de montaje y perfiles. Las vistas explosionadas se muestran con diseño en tres dimensiones y son muy claras. La única opción de pintura, casi inevitable por otra parte, es un vehículo pintado de verde con calcas alternativas en las matrículas y marcas tácticas.
Valoración
Ignoro si hay otras maquetas de este camión en su versión japonesa. Desde luego, a esta escala, debe ser muy bien recibida, porque salvo alguna excepción, como el antiguo TX40 de Hasegawa, no parece haber muchos vehículos ligeros japoneses de este estilo en plástico.
La maqueta está bien detallada tanto en el interior como por fuera y sólo le falta una carga atractiva y un escenario donde situarla. La adición del conductor ya facilita esto último en no poca medida. Esperemos que IBG continúe en esta línea y nos siga trayendo más vehículos de este tipo a los aficionados a la escala.◊
The kit
IBG Models have been releasing a good bunch of WWII Japanese armor in the last times and one of the new kits is this 917t truck in IJA version. The vehicle was to some extent a copy of the 1938 Ford model manufactured by Isuzu as an evolution of the TX40 truck. The truck weighed 3 tons and could carry up to one and a half ton of cargo with its 52 hp engine at a respectable top speed of 75 km/h. The model was used by the Japanese Army throughout the World War.
IBG had previously released a German version of this vehicle, so both kits share the same tool. However the cab, cargo bed, rear fenders and running boards are specific to the Japanese version.
The box contains six sprues of parts, including a clear sprue, a photo-etched fret, decals and instructions. Plastic is well molded and parts are pretty clean. Some have small, easily removable ejector pips and there are only marks on the underside of the fenders and on the inside of the rear cab panel. None will be visible when the kit is finished. Some parts are quite thin and care should be taken when removing them from the sprues. General detail is quite good with outstanding definition in some areas.
Assembly focuses on three main sub-assemblies: the chassis on one side, the cabin and nose on the other, and finally the cargo bed.
Engine
IBG has included a fairly complete engine that is made up of an engine block with the air filter and water pump attached to this piece. The rocker covers are double and are located on the block sides. There are several separate parts for the radiator hoses, oil pump, alternator and pulleys, these having a thick belt, and a photo-etched fan. The radiator, which shows excellent detail for this scale, comes separate as well as the exhaust pipe, molded in one piece with the muffler.
Chassis, transmission and wheels
The frame is a single piece made with all but the last crossmember and a section of the transmission shaft detailed with cardan joints. The bumper comes separately, as do the photo-etched rear towing hooks.
The front axle has separate leaf springs, a stabilizer bar and very thin and delicate torsion bars. The rear axle is molded with the differential and also features separate leaf springs and thin torsion bars. Between the two axles you have to add a section of the transmission shaft.
Brake drums are different on both axles and come separate. The wheels look great. The rims are well profiled and detail on the hub is very sharp for the scale. The tires have a nicely rendered pattern both on the edges and on the tread.
Cabin
The interior space is made up of a roof, a floor molded with the seat base, a rear panel detailed with the backrest, a transparent window and two rifles arranged above the seat. The panel has ejector marks, two of them at the top that will be covered by the rifles and two at the bottom that will be invisible behind the seat.
The front panel is molded with the windshield frame. The windshield is a transparent piece that is not too thick. The panel shows tiny pedals molded on the floor and we also find several more pieces that represent the gear and brake levers, the dashboard, with raised instruments, the steering wheel and the steering column.
The doors come separate and there are no windows, but the external raised moulding and internal padding are quite good. There are also a couple of photo-etched exterior bars and rearview mirrors in separate pieces.
Body and cargo bed
The nose comprises two sides, the hood and the front grill. The sides are well outlined and show fine moldings. The grill is somewhat thick but the external face is nicely detailed, showing the characteristic star of Japanese Army vehicles.
The front fenders are well molded with the running boards to the length of the cab and the rear fenders containing the rest of the running boards. Both pieces are not too thin, but they look within acceptable limits. The nose features two one-piece headlights and a photo-etched license plate.
The cargo box is made up of a support frame made up of side members and cross members in one piece. The sides and bottom of the box are separated and show great detail on the wood planking on both sides. The rear number plate is also a photo-etched piece and the fenders are detailed with toolboxes as well as a photo-etched container to hold water or engine oil bottles that IBG has made of clear plastic.
Figure
IBG has included a driver figure molded in one piece except for the separated arms. The soldier is dressed in a tropical uniform, judging by the field cap with neck flap, and has his arms resting on the steering wheel. Detail of the uniform and the leggings is not superb, nor is the face. However, the figure is not bad at all and will be a nice addition to the kit if we want to use it.
Decals
The sheet contains license plates, numbers and tactical markings. The decals have a thin appearance and are quite sharp. The instructions say that one of the license plate sets belonged to the truck the Japanese artist Tarō Okamoto drove during the war. Curious about this late artist, I found out that he was an outstanding reference in avant-garde art in his country before the war. In 1942 he was mobilised and sent to China, where he became a prisoner of war for a few years until his return to Japan in 1946.
Instructions
The instruction booklet is A4 size and consists of eight pages printed in color on glossy paper. It contains a numbered parts plan, a color chart with equivalences in Tamiya, Vallejo, Hataka, Life Color and AK Interactive paints, thirteen assembly sequences and profiles of the truck. The exploded views are displayed in a three-dimensional layout and are very clear. The only paint option, almost unavoidable by the way, is a vehicle painted overall khaki with alternate decals for the license plates and tactical markings.
Conclusion
I don’t know if there are other kits of this truck in its Japanese version. Anyway, it must be welcome as with a few exceptions, like the old Hasegawa TX40 truck, there don’t seem to be many Japanese softskins in plastic.
The kit is well detailed both inside and outside and only lacks an attractive load and a setting to place it on. The addition of the driver already makes the latter easier to no small extent. Let’s hope that IBG continues in this line and bring more vehicles of this type to scale fans.◊
