Un vehículo raro, fácil de montar y con posibilidades de pintura incluso especulativas que tiene en contra el tiempo que se tarde en limpiar las cadenas. Para la multitud de aficionados a la Wehrmacht.

La maqueta
No hace demasiado que esta maqueta está en el catálogo de Das Werk. Se trata de otra de las habituales colaboraciones de la casa alemana con la china Amusing Hobby. En esta ocasión se trata del Borgward VK3.02 del que se fabricaron unas decenas de ejemplares. Contrariamente a lo que vemos en la tapa de la caja, el VK3 no estaba diseñado para llevar munición a carros de combate, sino a las unidades de infantería en el frente.
Esta maqueta se ha reeditado, con las modificaciones lógicas, como el cañón autopropulsado Pz. Sfl. Ia (DW35017) que empleaba idéntico chasis. Antes de ellas el modelista sólo podía hacer el vehículo con la maqueta de resina de Brach Model.
En la caja encontramos tres bastidores de piezas, dos tramos de cadenas sueltos, el chasis separado, una pequeña hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico es fino, las piezas están bien moldeadas y no tienen marcas visibles. Las cadenas traen multitud de cilindros de salida del eyector. Limpiarlas no es difícil sino entretenido. Incluso contando los eslabones de las cadenas, la maqueta no tiene gran número de piezas y aparenta ser fácil de montar. Das Werk no ha puesto nada del interior, lo que hubiese redondeado algo más el producto, sobre todo considerando su ya escaso número de piezas.
Casco y tren de rodaje
El casco está moldeado en una sola pieza sin el suelo, la plancha posterior ni la salida de ventilación del motor. La pieza es fina y en su parte central superior muestra la apertura para instalar el PaK 38 del Pz. Sfl. Ia, pero en esta maqueta irá tapada por los contenedores de munición. Extrañamente la pieza contiene el lado derecho del habitáculo de la tripulación pero no el izquierdo, que viene separado. La parte frontal del casco posee una compuerta abisagrada dotada de una rejilla de salida que debe simular el acceso a la transmisión. La pieza está detallada con tres diminutos enganches para enrollar un cable de arrastre que la maqueta no tiene. También hay una pequeña argolla y un gancho en forma de S. Más a proa tenemos la base del faro Notek. El faro es una pieza aparte. La parte frontal del casco cuenta con un par de enganches remachados unidos a la parte interna de la transmisión. El lado trasero cuenta con un faro en la pieza y otro separado, además de otras dos piezas en los extremos que ignoro lo que son. Hay también un gancho de remolque y un grueso silenciador con un tubo de escape corto y parcialmente horadado.
Los lados del chasis llevan moldeadas las cubiertas de la transmisión y el eje de la rueda tractora, así como los agujeros para instalar los brazos de la suspensión.
El tren de rodaje se compone de una rueda tractora, otra tensora y cuatro ruedas a cada lado. La tractora la forman dos piezas, pero la interior tiene un par de cilindros del expulsor que limpiar. La externa viene muy limpia. Los dientes están poco resaltados y parecen escasamente realistas para mover unas cadenas con gruesas zapatas de caucho similares a las del Sd.Kfz. 251, por ejemplo. La rueda tensora es idéntica a las del tren de rodaje, pero posee su propio brazo articulado diferente. Las ruedas del tren de rodaje están formadas por dos piezas con el buje detallado con diminutas tuercas, radios finos y la banda de caucho bien marcada, aunque parece demasiado delgada.
Cadenas
Están formadas a cada lado por dos tramos rectos y 22 eslabones sueltos. Dejando a un lado los restos del eyector ya comentados, no presentan marcas y los eslabones vienen limpios, con las zapatas de goma bien definidas. Las instrucciones no indican el número de eslabones sueltos necesarios, que deben contarse en la vista explosionada del montaje. Sin embargo, sí hay una ilustración para orientar las cadenas correctamente.
Superestructura
La plancha frontal del habitáculo es una pieza con dos visores con mirillas abiertas y remachadas alrededor. Los lados del pequeño habitáculo también llevan visores, pero el del lado derecho está moldeado en la pieza, mientras que en el lado izquierdo es una pieza separada. El techo del habitáculo es de una pieza con las escotillas abiertas y tapas separadas con un pequeño cierre en el lado interior. Las bisagras tienen buen detalle aunque parecen demasiado grandes.
La cubierta trasera la ocupan los contenedores de munición a los lados, y en el centro una sección plana que muestra la tapa de acceso al motor. Las bisagras no están mal, pero de nuevo son demasiado gruesas. Los lados de los contenedores están separados y no tienen detalle salvo una pala en uno de los lados.
Los guardabarros vienen en secciones separadas. Los delanteros son finos y están detallados con los faros de conducción nocturna y un extintor. Los traseros no son tan finos pero me parecen aceptables. Tras los guardabarros delanteros el vehículo cuenta con dos cajas de herramientas con tapas separadas.
Calcas
La pequeña hoja sólo contiene cruces balcánicas negras y blancas de tres tipos y tamaños. Su apariencia es fina y brillante.
Instrucciones
El folleto tiene ocho páginas y está impreso en color en papel satinado. Muestra siete secuencias de construcción y perfiles a color con referencias de pinturas de Ammo Mig. Las vistas explosionadas son claras. Los perfiles muestran cuatro vehículos pintados de forma diferente, tanto con camuflaje como sin él.
Valoración
Das Werk ha hecho en plástico un pequeño vehículo del arsenal alemán que durante mucho tiempo solo estuvo al alcance del modelista en resina y esto siempre es una buena noticia. Este VK3.02 es una maqueta sencilla de montar, pero ineludiblemente habrá que eliminar la multitud de restos de eyector presentes sobre todo en las cadenas. También se echa de menos que el fabricante hubiese puesto algo del interior, ya que el corto número de piezas da holgura para ello sin saturar al modelista.
El vehículo puede dar juego en casi cualquier escena ambientada en la II Guerra Mundial con una carga adecuada y hasta diría que igualmente se podría pintar casi en cualquier camuflaje alemán del momento por mucho que fuese especulativo, por eso la maqueta me parece recomendable a la legión de aficionados a ese periodo histórico.◊
The kit
This kit has not been in the Das Werk catalog for too long. This is another of the usual collaborations of the German manufacturer with the Chinese Amusing Hobby. This time it is the Borgward VK3.02, an ammo carrier of which a few dozen copies were manufactured. Contrary to what we see on the artbox, the VK3 was not designed to carry ammunition to armored units, but to infantry units.
This kit has been reissued, with the logical modifications, as the Pz. Sfl. Ia (DW35017) that used the same chassis. Before these two kits the modeller could only build the vehicle with the Brach Model resin release.
Inside the box we find three sprues, two loose track lengths, a separate hull, a small decal sheet and the instructions. The plastic is thin, the pieces are well molded and have no visible marks. The tracks have lots of ejector ejector pips. Cleaning them up is not difficult but boring. Even counting the track links, the kit does not have a large number of parts and appears to be an easy build. Das Werk has not included anything inside, which would have rounded off the product especially considering the low part count.
Hull and running gear
The hull is molded in one piece without the floor, back plate and engine vent. The piece is thin and in its upper central part it shows the opening to install the PaK 38 of the Pz. Sfl. Ia, but in this release it will be covered by the ammo containers. Strangely, the piece is molded with the right side of the crew compartment but not the left side, which is separate. The front part of the hull has a hinged hatch provided with an outlet grille that must be the access to the transmission. The piece is detailed with three tiny hooks for winding a tow cable that the kit doesn’t have. There is also a small eyelet and an S-hook. Further forward we have the base of the Notek headlight. The headlight is a separate piece. The hull front sides features a pair of riveted planks with lifting hooks. The rear side has a headlight molded in the piece and a separate one, as well as two other pieces on the ends that I don’t know what they represent. There’s also a pintle hook and a thick muffler with a short, partially drilled exhaust.
The hull sides are molded with the transmission covers and the sprocket axles, as well as holes for attaching the suspension arms.
The running gear consists of a sprocket, an idler wheel and four road wheels on each side. The sprocket is made up of two pieces, but the interior wheel has a couple of ejector pips to clean. The teeth look a bit short for moving tracks fitted with thick rubber pads similar to those of the Sd.Kfz. 251, for example. The idler is identical to the road wheels, but has its own different suspension arm. The road wheels are made up of two pieces with the hub detailed with tiny nuts, thin spokes and the rubber tread well defined, though it looks too thin.
Tracks
They comprise two legths and 22 loose links per side. Leaving aside the blemish already mentioned, there are no marks and the links are clean, with well-defined rubber pads. The instructions do not indicate the number of loose links needed, which must be counted in the exploded view of the instructions. However, there is an illustration for positioning the tracks correctly.
Superstructure
The front plate of the crew compartment shows two riveted visors with open slits. The sides of the small compartment also have visors, but the one on the right side is molded on the hull piece, while the one on the left side comes separate. The roof of the crew compartment is a piece with open hatches and separate covers with a small latch on the inner side. The hinges are detailed although they seem too big.
The rear deck carries two ammo bins on the sides, with a flat section in between showing the engine access cover. The hinges are not bad, but again they are too thick. The sides of the containers are separated and have no detail except for a shovel on one side.
The fenders come in separate sections. The front ones are thin and are detailed with night driving lights and a fire extinguisher. The rear fenders are not that thin but look acceptable. Two toolboxes with separate lids are placed behind the front fenders.
Decals
The small sheet only contains black and white Balkan crosses of three types and sizes. They look thin and have a shiny appearance.
Instructions
The brochure is eight pages long and is printed in color on glossy paper. The brochure shows seven construction chapters and color profiles with Ammo Mig paint references. Exploded views are clear. The profiles show four vehicles painted differently, both with and without camouflage.
Conclusion
This ammo transporter Das Werk released not so long ago had been only available in resin and having it in plastic is always good news. It is a simple kit to build, but the large number of ejector pips present, mostly on the tracks, will inevitably have to be cleaned up. For once, one also misses that the manufacturer had included an interior, as the small number of pieces allows it without saturating the modeller.
The vehicle can play in almost any scene set in World War II with an adequate load and I would even say that it could also be painted in almost any German camouflage of the time, no matter how speculative. If you are into German rare vehicles, this is a kit for you.◊
