La maqueta

Esta es una maqueta que apareció en 2009 como molde nuevo y que Zvezda viene reeditando desde entonces. También ha sido copiada por Revell con sus propias instrucciones, calcas y versiones diferentes. Esta misma maqueta, pero sin el sidecar y con dos figuras diferentes, ha sido también puesta a la venta por el fabricante ruso como German R-12 Heavy Motorcycle with Rider and Officer (referencia 3632). Aunque los moldes antiguos de la casa rusa no son precisamente un primor, hay que reconocer que se esmeró bastante en este.

La otra maqueta que actualmente le hace la competencia en esta escala es la de IBG Models. El fabricante polaco ha editado tanto la versión civil, con uno o dos carburadores, como la militar sin incluir figuras. Ambas cajas tienen más variedad de opciones de pintura y unas calcas impresas por Techmod que poseen mejor aspecto que las de Zvezda. Aunque el despiece es muy similar en los dos moldes, la definición en el detalle de las piezas es bastante mejor en la maqueta de Zvezda.

La caja contiene tres bastidores de piezas sensatamente repartidos: uno para la motocicleta, otro para el sidecar y un tercero para las figuras. El plástico es fino y está bien moldeado. Sólo observo marcas en el interior del sidecar, pero no serán visibles al montarlo, especialmente si además ponemos una figura dentro. También hay algunas en la cara inferior de los reposapiés, pero muy leves y negativas. El resto de las piezas no muestra rebabas y sólo algunas traen pequeños cilindros del expulsor sencillos de eliminar. Hay muchas piezas delicadas, susceptibles de partirse al sacarlas de los bastidores, por ello hay que extremar el cuidado con el corte y la manipulación.

La maqueta tiene dos opciones de acabado. Puede montarse con los dos ocupantes y una MG 34 en su afuste sobre el sidecar, o bien con un solo ocupante a los mandos sujetando el rico botín de un cerdo camino de Intendencia, supongo. De este modo, el modelista puede elegir entre una pose más “profesional”, u otra más “pícara”, según se presente el tema y las ganas.

La R12 que representa la maqueta fue la primera motocicleta con horquilla telescópica del mundo. Llevaba un motor de 750 cc. que arrancaba sin batería y tenía una caja de cambios manual de cuatro velocidades. El modelo civil fue adoptado por la Wehrmacht y empleado con y sin sidecar en todos los frentes.

Motocicleta

Como en cualquier otro vehículo, el montaje empieza por el motor. El bloque está dividido en cuatro piezas con los cilindros separados y despiezados en mitades. El bloque incluye la dinamo-magneto y el motor de arranque en la parte frontal, con el pedal de arranque separado. También son piezas aparte el carburador con conductos de alimentación a los dos cilindros. Los cables del magneto a los cilindros deben pegarse hasta añadir posteriormente los tubos de escape.

La siguiente fase es formar el bastidor, que comprende dos mitades en piezas finas y moldeadas con el estampado del larguero superior. En medio hay que pegar diversas piezas que le dan consistencia y por fuera varias más para detallarlo, como la caja de cambios, con la palanca separada; los reposapiés de los ocupantes, texturizados en la cara superior; el caballete de soporte; el pedal del freno; y por último la transmisión, que en esta motocicleta no era de cadena, sino mediante un eje. El depósito lo forman una mitad superior, detallada con el tapón de llenado, y otra inferior.

Cada brazo de la horquilla delantera debe unirse a una mitad del guardabarros. El conjunto se une una vez ensamblada la rueda delantera. El faro tiene tres piezas, la parte superior muestra el botón de encendido y el velocímetro, provisto de calca. La lente simula estar tapada por una funda donde se deja marcar la ranura de conducción nocturna. La maqueta incluye dos manillares, uno de ellos incluido en el bastidor de las figuras del que se da cuenta más abajo. El manillar del bastidor de la moto es de una pieza y muestra las empuñaduras y las manetas de freno. Por último, la placa de matrícula delantera es fina, aunque siempre queda más realista si se puede sustituir por una pieza de fotograbado.

El guardabarros trasero también viene dividido en mitades moldeadas con abrazaderas finas que van unidas a la transmisión. La placa de matrícula viene separada. El sillín trasero va situado sobre el guardabarros y pegado sobre varias piezas que hacen de soporte, una de ellas está provista del asa del ocupante. El delantero va unido sobre una pequeña horquilla con dos muelles helicoidales, única amortiguación trasera de la motocicleta. Las mochilas de almacenaje van sujetas a la parte trasera en dos bastidores. Las piezas están separadas en lado frontal y trasero, mostrando la primera las correas de cierre y hebillas bien detalladas, aunque rígidas y poco realistas. El montaje de la R12 termina con el añadido de los tubos de escape, moldeados de una pieza con la salida aplastada en forma de cola de pez y sin ranurar, ya que es difícil horadar tan finos extremos.

Las cuatro ruedas del vehículo, incluyendo en la cuenta la del sidecar y la de repuesto, están divididas en mitades. Los radios son finos y bastante realistas en grosor, mientras que los neumáticos muestran la banda de rodadura muy bien reproducida.

Sidecar

La carrocería está dividida en mitades con dos piezas separadas que seccionan el morro. En la parte delantera interna muestra el piso con los resaltes de madera. El asiento viene almohadillado, mientras que el respaldo es demasiado plano y también encontramos el manillar del ocupante.

En la parte delantera de la carrocería hay un soporte que contiene el afuste de la ametralladora, que viene aparte. La ametralladora me parece bastante buena y cuenta incluso con las miras. El bípode y el tambor de munición están separados. También hay una mochila de almacenaje similar a las de la moto.

La parte trasera cuenta con el soporte de la rueda de repuesto, la propia rueda, y la funda doblada como fardo con sus cinchas y hebillas reproducidas, aunque son mejorables.

La carrocería va pegada sobre el bastidor, que es de una pieza. Hay dos medias ballestas para la amortiguación. En este caso, el guardabarros está hecho en una sola pieza y se añade sobre la rueda una vez que está está sujeta al bastidor mediante un pequeño cilindro que le permite girar. Al igual que en la R12 real, el sidecar tiene cuatro puntos de unión con la moto, dos de ellos posibilitados por barras laterales de soporte.

Figuras

La maqueta trae tres figuras de soldados y la de un cerdo. Las figuras vienen acompañadas en su bastidor de diversos complementos del atuendo. Las instrucciones ofrecen dos posibilidades para situar las figuras.

La primera muestra al conductor dirigiendo el vehículo y a su acompañante en el sidecar empuñando la ametralladora. El conductor está despiezado en cabeza, tronco, brazos y las piernas unidas a las caderas. Las manos están separadas y moldeadas con el manillar para darles más realismo. El rostro muestra expresión seria y las facciones no están mal siendo de plástico. El detalle del uniforme y las arrugas de las prendas están bien definidos. La figura tiene varios elementos del atuendo separados, como el casco, la bayoneta, el contenedor de la máscara antigás, la cantimplora, un fusil y bolsillos para los cartuchos. El ametrallador tiene el mismo despiece pero las manos están unidas a los brazos y sujetan la ametralladora. El rostro es distinto al del conductor y las facciones son convincentes.

También se puede escoger una segunda posibilidad que muestra a un motociclista conduciendo la moto con una mano en el manillar opuesto y sujetando a la vez la carga de un cerdo atado de patas situado en el sidecar. Zvezda ha incluido en las instrucciones una foto de época igual en la que ha basado esta opción para demostrar su verosimilitud. El soldado tiene el mismo despiece de las figuras anteriores pero la cabeza lleva incorporada una gorra en lugar de casco. Los elementos de su atuendo separados comprenden una cantimplora, la bayoneta, el fusil y una sección de su correa, el contenedor de la máscara y los bolsillos de municiones. El bastidor incluye algunas piezas más que pueden emplearse en las figuras, como gafas de motorista y una pistola enfundada.

El cerdo está dividido en cabeza y dos piezas para el cuerpo. El modelado no está mal, especialmente la cabeza, pero las patas atadas carecen de buena definición.

Tanto las figuras como el animal tienen un despiece sensato y el montaje no debe ofrecer dificultades. El detalle general es bastante bueno y complementan muy bien al vehículo.

Calcas

Una hoja pequeña impresa por el propio fabricante contiene cuatro juegos de matrículas, el velocímetro y marcas tácticas. Los motivos parecen bien impresos y no traen demasiado soporte.

Instrucciones

Están impresas en blanco y negro en un folleto doblado de seis páginas de tamaño A4. Contiene un breve resumen histórico sobre la moto, un plano de piezas numerado, vistas de las dos terminaciones posibles, 21 secuencias de montaje, perfiles y una lista de colores con equivalencias en pinturas de Zvezda y Humbrol. Las secuencias de montaje son sencillas de seguir. La cara trasera de la caja muestra también las dos opciones de acabado de esta maqueta que mencionaba más arriba.

Todas las opciones de pintura muestran el vehículo pintado de gris y situado en el Frente Oriental, pero el modelista puede escoger opciones alternativas de pintura empleadas en otros teatros de operaciones, como África septentrional.

Valoración

Zvezda nos dio una de sus mejores versiones con esta maqueta, que no tiene nada que ver con otras anteriores de vehículos militares. Tanto la motocicleta como el sidecar son sencillos de montar y están en general muy bien detallados. Aunque otras marcas también ofrecen la R12, la del fabricante ruso merece ser considerada como opción y no sólo por su factura, sino también por las figuras y las posibilidades de terminación. Obviamente, hay detalles menores que se pueden mejorar, como las correas, hebillas y mochilas, pero no hay duda que Zvezda estudió muy bien la motocicleta, haciéndola asequible para modelistas de cualquier nivel de experiencia. ♦

The kit

This is a kit released in 2009 as a new tool that Zvezda has been reboxing ever since. It has also been reboxed by Revell with their own instructions, decals and different versions. This same kit, without the sidecar and including two different figures, is also offered as German R-12 Heavy Motorcycle with Rider and Officer (reference 3632). Although the old military model kits of the Russian company are not exactly exquisite, it must be recognized that they put extra effort in this one.

The box contains three sensibly distributed sprues: one for the motorcycle, one for the sidecar, and a third for the figures. Plastic parts are thin and clean. I only see pin marks inside the sidecar, but they won’t be visible when attaching the seat and a figure. There are also some marks on the bottom sides of the footrests, but very shallow. The rest of the pieces show no blemishes and only some have small ejector pips that are easy to clean. There are many delicate pieces, likely to be broken when removing them from the sprues, so extreme care is needed to handle them too.

The kit has two assembly options. It can be built with two riders and an MG 34 on the sidecar, or with a single rider at the controls holding the rich loot of a pig on the way to his company kitchen, I suppose. So, the modeller can choose between a more «professional» pose, or another more «mischievous», depending on his mood and wish.

The R12 that the kit renders was the first motorcycle with a fork in the world. It had a 750 cc engine which started without a battery and had a four-speed manual gearbox. The civilian model was adopted by the Wehrmacht and used with and without a sidecar on all fronts.

Motorcycle

As in any other vehicle with one, assembly begins with the engine. The block is divided in four pieces with the cylinders separated and broken up in halves. The block includes the dynamo-magnet and the starter on the front, with a separate starter pedal. The carburettor with feed ducts to the two cylinders are also separate parts. The cable joining the magneto and the cylinders is not be glued until a later step when you attach the exhaust pipes.

The next subassembly is to build the frame, which comprises two halves in thin pieces molded with the stamping of the upper spar. Several pieces are in between the chassis frame and a few more on the outside, such as the gearbox, with the separate lever; the footrests, textured on the upper faces; the kickstand; the brake pedal; and finally the transmission, which was driven by an axle instead of a chain. The tank is made up of an upper half, detailed with the filler cap, and a lower half.

Each front fork arm must be attached to one half of the front fender. The set is attached once the front wheel is assembled. The headlight comes in three pieces, the upper part showing the ignition switch and the speedometer, whcich is provided with a decal. The lens simulates a cover where the night driving slot can be seen. The kit includes two handlebars, one of them provided in the sprue of the figures, which is described below. The handlebar in the bike sprue is one piece showing the grips and levers. Finally, the front license plate is thin, though it will look more realistic if it can be replaced with a photo-etched part.

The rear fender is also split into molded halves with clamps to be attached to the transmission. The license plate comes separate. The rear seat consists of several parts and is provided with the passenger’s handle. The front seat is attached to a small fork with two coil springs, the only rear shock absorber in the motorcycle. Saddlebags are attached to the back on two racks. The pieces are separated on the front and back sides, the first showing detailed but a bit stiff and unrealistic straps and buckles. Assembly finishes with the addition of the exhaust pipes, molded in one piece with the muzzles flattened in a fish tail shape.. The muzzles are not hollowed as it must be difficult to show those very thin edges open.

The four wheels of the vehicle, including the sidecar wheel and the spare, are molded in halves. The spokes are thin and quite realistic, while the tires have quite nice tread patterns.

Sidecar

The body is divided in halves plus two separate pieces for the nose. The internal front floor shows the non-slip wooden texture. The seat is nicely padded, while the backrest is too flat. The handlebar is also separate.

The body front section has a bracket to place the MG 34 fork mount, which comes separately. The machine gun looks fine and is molded with the tiny sights. The bipod and ammo drum are separate. There is also a saddlebag similar to the ones on the motorcycle.

The rear body part is detailed with the spare wheel base, the wheel , and the cover folded as a bundle with straps and buckles rendered on the piece and showing passable definition.

The body is glued onto the frame, which is one piece. There are two half leaf springs. In this case, the fender is made in one piece and is added to the wheel once this is attached to the frame by a small cylinder that allows it to rotate. Just like the real R12, the sidecar has four attachment points to the bike, two of them represented in side arms.

Figures

The kit includes three soldier figures and a pig. The sprue containing the figures also includes several accessories. The instructions offer two possibilities to place the figures.

The first shows the driver riding the vehicle and his companion in the sidecar holding the machine gun. The driver is divided in head, trunk, arms and legs molded with the hips. His hands are separated and molded with the handlebars for a more relaistic apperance. His face shows a serious expression and rendition is not bad for the media. The detail of the uniform and the wrinkles of the garments are well defined. The figure has several separate items, such as a helmet, a bayonet, a gas mask container, a water bottle, a rifle, and ammo pouches. The machine gunner has the same breakup and he is depicted holding the machine-gun. The face is different from that of the driver and detail is also convincing.

There is a second choice to finish the kit that shows a rider soldier with one hand on the opposite handlebar while holding the load of a bound-legged pig placed inside the sidecar. Zvezda have included a vintage photo in the instructions showing the same scene on which they based this option. The soldier has the same breakup as the previous figures, but the head is molded with a cap. Accesories include a water bottle, a bayonet, a rifle and a section of the strap, a mask container, and ammo poaches.The sprue includes a few other parts that can be used on the figures, such as motorcycle goggles and a gun inside a holster.

The pig figure is divided in a head and two pieces for the body. Detail is not bad, especially on the head, but the bound legs lack good definition.

Both the figures and the animal have a sensible parts breakup and assembly should not pose any difficulties. General detail is quite good and they are a nice complement for the vehicle.

Decals

A small sheet printed by the manufacturer contains four sets of license plates, the speedometer and tactical markings. Decals look well printed and have minimal carrier.

Instructions

They come in a folded six-page A4 brochure printed in black and white. It contains a brief historical summary on the motorcycle, a numbered parts plan, views of the two possible finishes, 21 assembly sequences, profiles and a table of colors with matches in Zvezda and Humbrol paints. Assembly sequences are easy to follow. The back of the box also shows the two finishing options I mentioned above.

All the paint options show the vehicle painted gray and located on the Eastern Front, but the modeller can choose alternative finishes used in other theaters of operations, such as North Africa.

Conclusion

Zvezda brought us a nice kit that has nothing to do with other military vehicles they released time ago. Both the motorcycle and the sidecar are easy to assemble and are generally very well detailed. Although IBG also offers a 1/35 scale BMW R12, this kit should be considered as a better option, not only because of the tool quality, but also because of the addition of the figures and the finishing possibilities. Obviously, there are minor details that can be improved, such as the straps, buckles and backpacks, but there is no doubt that Zvezda studied the bike very well, making it affordable for modellers of any experience level.◊
