La maqueta
En 2014 Tamiya añadió a su catálogo de vehículos militares en la escala 1/48 este camión GMC, un vehículo muy adecuado tanto para complementar un avión a la misma escala, como para aparecer solo en una escena. Como todas las de esta escala, la maqueta simplifica algunas partes para facilitar el montaje. A cambio, el detalle en otras compensa y tal vez sea esto lo que más atrae al modelista.
La maqueta aprovecha gran parte de las piezas de la versión de carga de este camión denominada en su caja US 2 ½ Ton 6×6 Cargo Truck (referencia 32548) que Tamiya había sacado años antes, pero contiene un bastidor específico para la versión de trasporte de combustible.
La caja contiene cinco bastidores, dos de ellos idénticos, con piezas para el vehículo y las figuras, un bastidor transparente, un trozo de hilo de cobre y otro de tubo de vinilo, las calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico es ya clásico en el fabricante, con piezas bien moldeadas y limpias. No aprecio marcas visibles, salvo en el tubo de escape, donde no es tan sencillo eliminarlas.
La maqueta representa la versión de transporte de carburante del camión GMC CCKW, apodado Jimmy y Deuce and a Half. El camión en sus múltiples versiones tomó parte, no sólo en la II Guerra Mundial, sino también en Corea. El depósito que transportaba esta versión tenía una capacidad de 2.800 litros.
Chasis y suspensión
El bastidor que Tamiya ha hecho en una sola pieza es un tanto peculiar, ya que en realidad no está entero al faltar algunos travesaños. Además incluye un motor bastante simplón y cuya parte inferior no está completamente moldeada.
La transmisión viene en una pieza que incluye los árboles delantero y trasero, los diferenciales, los palieres y la caja de transferencia con juntas cardan bien detalladas. Sólo la barra de torsión en el eje delantero viene separada. Las ballestas también están sueltas, así como los paragolpes de ambos extremos y sus ganchos de remolque. El tubo de escape es específico de este camión y es bastante más largo que el de la versión de carga general. Está moldeado con el silenciador y, como he señalado, posee algunas marcas pequeñas que no son muy visibles pero que afean la pieza.
Si la transmisión y suspensión son de alguna manera suficientes pero no destacan demasiado, las ruedas son excelentes. Vienen completas, excepto las delanteras que tienen parte de la cara interna del neumático por separado. El detalle en las llantas y los neumáticos es de gran calidad y finura, y apenas hay que repasar un poco las mínimas líneas de molde.
Cabina
Salvo algunas piezas, como los guardabarros y parte del interior, es diferente al modelo de carga, ya que el techo es de metal y no de lona en esta ocasión. El interior contiene un suelo que carece de pedales pero está detallado con un asiento liso sin textura, el volante, la palanca de marchas más otras dos auxiliares, el panel frontal y el salpicadero, provisto de calca para los indicadores.
La carrocería de la cabina está moldeada a partir del techo, que está unido al capó del motor. Parte del panel trasero, las puertas y el resto del morro viene separado. El techo muestra los pequeños motores de los limpiaparabrisas, sin embargo las escobillas vienen unidas al parabrisas transparente. Este detalle no es propio de Tamiya y aquí la marca ha simplificado demasiado. Los lados del motor muestran las ranuras de ventilación de forma poco convincente. En la parte frontal hay una pieza que simula el radiador y la rejilla, que es bastante fina para ser de plástico. Las puertas están separadas y poseen buen detalle en las bisagras, pero las manetas internas y externas son simplonas. Los retrovisores son también piezas aparte.
Los guardabarros están unidos en su parte trasera para asentar la cabina sobre ella. En cuanto a finura parecen gruesos pero al menos los estribos muestran cierto detalle en la superficie antideslizante. Los faros tienen lentes transparentes y hay también un faro de conducción nocturna. Las piezas del parabrisas y las ventanillas son muy transparentes sin grosor excesivo.
Tanque de combustible
Esta zona de la maqueta está en conjunto mejor detallada que otras. El montaje comprende seis de los 17 capítulos de montaje de las instrucciones.
El suelo que soporta el depósito es de una pieza y está moldeado con compartimentos en la parte delantera para contener las mangueras en ambos lados. La zona trasera presenta otro compartimento para alojar la bomba de presión y el conducto que conecta con las mangueras. La parte superior del depósito es igualmente de una pieza y contiene dos pasillos laterales detallados con el suelo antideslizante. La zona superior del depósito cuenta con la escotilla de llenado separada, asas y un faro con lente transparente para operaciones nocturnas, así como un pequeño depósito lateral.
Los lados delantero y trasero del depósito vienen aparte. En el lado delantero hay un extintor y una pala, mientras que en el trasero vemos los estribos de acceso a la parte superior del tanque. El lado trasero lleva la rueda del repuesto en su soporte. Los lados de la caja de transporte vienen completos en sendas piezas que muestran diversos compartimentos con sus cierres, pero sólo el delantero del lado derecho puede pegarse abierto.
En el interior de dicho alojamiento hay dos rulos con eje para enrollar dos mangueras. Tamiya ha estudiado de forma ingeniosa cómo reproducir las mangueras de forma realista. La maqueta trae un tramo de hilo de cobre y otro de fino tubo de vinilo. El hilo debe introducirse en el tubo para conseguir asentarlo con la forma que deseemos. Los tramos deben cortarse en trozos iguales ya que hay que enrollar dos mangueras en sus soportes. Una de ellas aparece en su posición normal de transporte y la otra desenrollada y en manos de una de las figuras. El sistema de fijación de las mangueras a sus rulos viene claramente expuesto en las instrucciones. Ambas mangueras cuentan con sus dispositivos de salida en piezas de plástico.
Figuras
La maqueta sigue incluyendo la figura del conductor de la versión de carga, aunque esta no aparece en las instrucciones. El conductor está moldeado de cuerpo entero con cabeza y brazos separados. El tronco muestra un ligero escorzo para orientar la figura un poco hacia la ventanilla que estará situada a su izquierda. La cabeza es muy pequeña, sin embargo la expresión sonriente de la cara puede apreciarse con claridad. El casco viene separado y los brazos están situados sobre el volante. El detalle del uniforme incluye las polainas y me parece pasable sin más. Hay un ligero rechupe en la espalda, aunque no será evidente al pegarla al asiento.
Las figuras de esta edición son mejores que la del conductor. Se trata de un operario vestido en mono de faena y el conductor, que viste cazadora militar y polainas. El operario está despiezado con el tronco moldeado hasta la cintura y los codos, la cabeza y la gorra separadas ambas, antebrazos y manos en la misma pieza y las caderas y piernas separadas. La definición de su atuendo es claramente visible. El despiece del soldado es similar, pero los brazos están completos. Así mismo el detalle del uniforme muestra aún mejor definición.
Ambas figuras aparecen de pie en actitud relajada. El operario sostiene la manguera, mientras el soldado está apoyado en una de las puertas del compartimento de mangueras abierto. Los rostros muestran expresiones diferentes y realistas.
Calcas
La hoja contiene insignias norteamericanas, matrículas, rótulos, los instrumentos del salpicadero y marcas de unidad y tácticas para los paragolpes. Los motivos son finos y están bien impresos.
Instrucciones
Están impresas en un folleto doblado formando 10 páginas impreso en blanco y negro. Contiene un sumario histórico sobre el vehículo, 17 capítulos de montaje y perfiles para pintar y colocar las calcas. Como casi siempre en Tamiya, las instrucciones son de gran ayuda en detalles importantes del montaje que se advierten con gran claridad.
Las dos versiones de esta edición no son variadas, distinguiéndose solamente en algunas marcas. Ambas están situadas en Francia tras las invasión de Normandía.
Valoración
Esta es una maqueta polivalente que podemos emplear tanto sola como acompañada de otras, ya sean estas vehículos o aviones. Como de costumbre en tiempos más recientes, Tamiya ha estudiado bien dónde y cómo poner más detalle para no sobrepasar el número de piezas y facilitar el montaje, que es sin duda lo que más suele apreciarse en sus vehículos militares a esta escala. Las figuras son otro punto a favor de esta maqueta ya que son siempre bienvenidas, al no haber tantas de este tamaño en comparación con otras escalas.
Es justo señalar que hay partes de la maqueta que no están del todo bien acabadas o detalladas, pero en general este es un vehículo que gustará a la mayoría de aficionados y a los seguidores de Tamiya en particular.◊
The kit
In 2014 Tamiya added this GMC truck to their catalog of military vehicles in 1/48 scale. This seems a very suitable machine either to be the perfect addition to an aircraft model at the same scale or to show it alone. Like all Tamiya kits at this size, the kit simplifies some detail to ease assembly. In return, detail in other areas compensates and perhaps this is what appeals to the modeller.
The kit is a rebox with lots of parts coming from the cargo version of this truck (US 2 ½ Ton 6×6 Cargo Truck, reference 32548) that Tamiya had released years before, but it has a sprue for the fuel tanker version and the new figures.
The box contains five sprues, two of them identical, with parts for the vehicle and the figures, a clear sprue, a length of copper wire and another one of vinyl tube, the decals and the instructions. Plastic is the already classic in the manufacturer, with well-shaped and clean parts. There are visible marks, except in the exhaust pipe, where they are not so easy to remove.
The kit represents the fuel tanker version of the GMC CCKW truck, the famous WWII vehicle nicknamed Jimmy and Deuce and a Half. The truck in its multiple versions took part, not only in World War II, but also in Korea. The fuel tank carried had a capacity of 2,800 liters.
Chassis and suspension
The chassis frame that Tamiya have made in one piece is somewhat peculiar, actually it is not complete as some cross members are missing. It also includes a rather simple engine with a lower side that is not completely molded.
The transmission comes in one piece that includes the front and rear axles, differentials, half-axles and the transfer case with well-detailed cardan joints. Only the torsion bar on the front axle is separate. The leaf springs are also loose, as are the bumpers at both ends and their tow hitch and hooks. The exhaust pipe is specific to this truck and is quite a bit longer than the one included in the general cargo version. It is molded with the muffler and, as said, it has some small marks that are not very visible but spoil the part a bit.
If the transmission and suspension are somehow enough but are not outstanding, the wheels are excellent. They come as one piece, except the front ones that have part of the internal tire face separately. Detail on the rims and tires is of great quality and finesse, the parts just needing some sanding to clean up the minimal seam lines.
Cabin
Except for some parts, such as the fenders and part of the interior, it is different from the cargo kit, since it shows a metal and not a canvas roof. The interior contains a floor that lacks the pedals but is detailed with a smooth seat without texture, the steering wheel, the gear lever plus two other levers, the front panel and the dashboard, which is provided with decals for the gauges.
The cab body roof is molded with the engine hood. Part of the rear panel, the doors and the rest of the nose are separated. The roof shows the tiny wiper engines, however the wiper arms are attached to the clear windshield. This looks a bit strange for Tamiya and here the company seems to have simplified things too much. The engine side covers are molded with the vents but they look unconvincing. On the front there is a piece for the radiator and the grille, which is quite thin for the media. The doors are separate and have good detail on the hinges, but the handles are quite simple. The mirrors are also separate pieces.
The fenders are molded together, joined by means of a flat surface to attach the cab on it. As for fineness, they seem thick but at least the running boards show some detail in the non-slip surface. The headlights have clear lenses and there is also a night driving headlight. The windshield and window parts are very transparent and not too thick.
Fuel tank
This section of the kit is better detailed than others. Assembly comprises six of the 17 assembly chapters in the instructions.
The floor that holds the tank is one piece and molded with compartments in the front to contain the hoses on both sides. The rear side has another compartment to hold the pressure pump and the pipe connected to the hoses. The upper tank section is also one piece with side sponsons detailed with non-slip surfaces. The tank top has a separate filler hatch, handles and a headlamp with a clear lens for night operations as well as a small side tank.
The front and rear sides of the tank come separately. On the front side there is a fire extinguisher and a shovel, while on the rear we have steps to climb to the upper part of the tank. The rear side has the spare wheel on its holder. The body side panels come in separate pieces that show compartments with their latches, but only the front one on the right side can be glued open.
Inside this compartment there are two rollers with an axle to roll up two hoses. Tamiya has ingeniously studied how to render the hoses realistically. The kit comes with a length of copper wire and another of thin vinyl tube. The wire is inserted into the tube to shape it as we wish. The lengths are to be cut in halves as we need two hoses. One of them is rolled up and the other unrolled and used by one of the figures. The system for attaching the hoses to their rollers is clearly shown in the instructions. Both hoses have their nozzles in plastic parts.
Figures
The kit still includes the driver figure from the previous release, though it is not shown in the instructions. The driver is molded full-length with separate head and arms. The trunk shows a slight foreshortening to pose the figure turned towards the window that will be located on the left. The head is very small, however the smiling expression on the face can be clearly seen. The helmet comes separate and the arms are on the steering wheel. The uniform detail includes the canvas leggings but it seems just passable. There is a slight sink in the figure’s back, although it won’t be obvious when you attach it to the seat.
The specific figures for this release are better than the original driver. There is an operator dressed in overalls and a driver, who wears a military jacket and leggings. The operator is molded with the trunk including the waist and elbows, the head and cap both separated, forearms and hands in the same piece and separated hips and legs. The figure shows nice definition for its size. The soldier’s breakup is similar, but his arms are complete. Detail on the uniform shows even better definition.
Both figures appear standing in a relaxed pose. The operator is rendered holding the hose, while the soldier is leaning against one of the open doors of the hose compartment. The faces show different and realistic expressions.
Decals
The sheet contains American markings, license plates, stencils, the dashboard gauges, and unit and tactical markings for the bumpers. The items are thin and well printed.
Instructions
They are printed in a folded leaflet comprising 10 black and white pages. It shows a historical summary of the vehicle, 17 assembly sections and profiles for painting and setting decals. As usual in Tamiya, the instructions are quite helpful in important assembly details that are clearly printed.
The two versions of this release are not varied, being different only in some markings. Both trucks are located in France after the Normandy invasion.
Conclusion
This is a versatile kit that we can use either alone or with other models, whether these are vehicles or aircraft. As usual in recent times, Tamiya has carefully studied where and how to add more detail to limit parts count and to ease assembly, which is probably what modellers most appreciate in their military vehicles at this scale. The figures are another asset of the kit and are always welcome, since there are not so many in this size as in other scales.
It is fair to point out that there are parts of the model that are not quite finished or detailed, but overall this is a vehicle that most AFV modellers and Tamiya fans in particular will like.◊
