LO MEJOR – THE BEST:
- Buena factura general. Buen moldeado de piezas. Aparentemente buen encaje. Transparentes muy buenos. Opción con morro acristalado (británica), o cerrado (norteamericana).
- Good general shape. Fine parts moulding. Apparently good fitting of parts. Very good clear parts. Choice with glazed (British) or closed nose (American).
LO PEOR – THE WORST:
- Líneas de panel en relieve en el fuselaje, pero grabadas en las alas. Interiores pobres. Pozos del tren de aterrizaje vacíos.
- Raised panel lines on fuselage but engraved on wings. Poor pilot’s and bomber’s compartments. Empty wheel wells.
VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Notable. A pesar de los interiores, dará mucho juego y poco trabajo para montarla.
- Above the average. In spite of the lack of interior detail, it is good value and hopefully an easy assembly.
Este Douglas A-20 sólo tiene de Matchbox el molde, pues se trata de una maqueta totalmente fabricada por Revell en Alemania. Se ha borrado de las bandejas su origen británico con poca elegancia y se le han añadido calcas e instrucciones también del fabricante alemán, quizás mejores que las que traía en origen.
Como de costumbre, la maqueta viene en una pequeña caja compacta que contiene tres bandejas de piezas, más una de transparentes y las calcas. Aunque la factura de las piezas es bastante buena en general, los paneles aparecen muy bien grabados en las alas pero levantados en el fuselaje. Las piezas transparentes no son gruesas y vienen bien detalladas. Con algunas mejoras de cableado en los motores, éstos pueden quedar bastante bien representados. Lo mismo sucede con los pozos del tren de aterrizaje, que vienen vacíos.
El encaje de las piezas parece excelente y no hay rastros de marcas ni rebabas. Se proporcionan las figuras del piloto y del bombardero para la versión con morro de cristal. Sus respectivos habitáculos vienen mal detallados. En la carlinga del piloto no hay siquiera panel de instrumentos, sólo el suelo, el asiento y los controles, y en la zona del apuntador de bombardeo la cosa es aún peor, pues si se añade el morro transparente, la figura aparecerá sentada en un sillón suspendido en la nada. Para los que gustan del detalle, aquí hay campo abierto.
Las instrucciones multilingües, típicas de Revell, ofrecen la posibilidad de construir el aparato con el morro acristalado y convertirlo en un Boston IV británico. Hay dos opciones de pintura. La primera es para un A-20G del 410º Grupo de Bombardeo de la Novena Fuerza Aérea norteamericana, basado en el Reino Unido en 1944 con camuflaje de tres colores y las típicas bandas de invasión. El bombardero británico pertenece al 18º Escuadrón del 47º Grupo de Bombardeo con base en Falconara (Italia) en diciembre de 1944 con esquema en dos tonos de gris. Las calcas de Revell están muy bien impresas y no son excesivamente gruesas.
En conjunto este es un modelo apto para modelistas de cualquier nivel. Su construcción parece muy sencilla y creo que cualquiera puede sacar mucho de él. Mucho más si se detallan algunas zonas ya mencionadas. Además, si se desea hacer otra versión distinta a las que ofrece esta maqueta, hay en el mercado variadas opciones de calcas.◊
This Douglas A-20 is a Matchbox kit only in the mould, because it is wholly made by Revell in Germany. As in the case of the Helldiver I review above, the «Made in England» mark has been badly removed from the sprues and new Revell decals and instructions have been included. Maybe they are better than the original ones.
As usual with Revell, the kit comes in a compact box containing three olive green plastic sprues, a clear part sprue and the decals. The making of the parts is quite good and the panel lines are well engraved on wings, however they are raised in the fuselage. The clear parts are not too thickish and are well detailed. The engines will look fine if they are added some wiring for example. And the same happens to the wheel wells.
The fitting of parts seems excellent and there is no trace of the dreaded pin marks. You are provided with the pilot’s and bombardier’s figures, the latter for the British Boston IV version with glass nose. Unluckily their compartments are badly detailed. In the pilot’s cockpit you only have a seat, a control stick and a floor, but things get worse for the bombardier, because if you choose to use the glass nose, he will be seen sitting in the middle of an empty room. Nor even a floor is provided. For the benefit of super detailers there is a lot of work to be done here.
The multilingual instruction, Revell’s own, give you the choice to build a British Boston IV with glass nose, as I have said, instead of an American Havoc. There are two painting schemes. The first is for an aircraft belonging to 410 Bombardment Group of the U.S. Ninth Air Force based on the United Kingdom in 1944. The camo scheme has three colours and the usual invasion stripes. The British bomber belongs to 18 Squadron of 47 Bombardment Group based in Falconara (Italy) in December 1944 and was painted in two shades of grey. Revell decals are finely printed and are not too thick.
In general, this kit is suitable for modelers of any skill level. Building this A-20 seems no especially difficult task, and I think anyone can get something out of it. Still more if the areas I mention above are properly detailed. Fortunately, if you pretend to paint a different version from the ones showed, you can find some good aftermarket detailing sets and decals for this aircraft.◊
