LO MEJOR – THE BEST:
- Formas generales muy bien conseguidas. Fácil de montar. Finos detalles y buen panelado inciso. Interior y motor mejor detallados de lo habitual. Bombas bien realizadas.
- General shape finely manufactured. Easy to build. Very good engraved panels. Cockpit and engine better detailed than usual. Nice armament.
LO PEOR – THE WORST:
- Ametralladoras simplificadas, especialmente en el morro. El despiece de las alas puede dar algún problema de encaje.
- Too simplified machine-guns, especially on cowling. Some fitting problems on wings.
VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Notable. Casi no hace falta nada más para conseguir un modelo excelente.
- Outstanding. Almost no aftermarket needed to get a nice model.
Este modelo del Dauntless de Hasegawa no es el que participó con tan exitosos resultados en Midway, sino la versión posterior al legendario SBD-3, que sí lo hizo. De todas formas, las diferencias con el modelo anterior son mínimas. En conjunto, este avión sobresale notablemente en todos los apartados que podamos considerar: calidad, despiece, facilidad de montaje, calcas, etc. Tal vez de media sea una de las maquetas de aviones a esta escala con mejor promedio de las que he visto.
El despiece del aparato lo constituyen ocho bandejas de diverso tamaño (poco más de 40 piezas) y la hoja de calcas. La carlinga viene dividida en tres secciones para poder abrirla, cosa no usual a esta escala. En cuanto al plástico, es de una calidad excelente, con detalles muy bien conseguidos, de modo que supongo que el modelista no tendrá especiales dificultades de montaje. Los alerones de este aparato consistían en una pieza metálica agujereada pintada en un rojo vivo por su cara interna, que en esta maqueta quedarían muy bien si se consiguieran de fotograbado, aunque no es imprescindible, pues la maqueta puede quedar muy bien tal y como viene.
La carlinga está mejor detallada de lo habitual a esta escala, con cuatro diminutas calcas para el panel de instrumentos. El motor es otra de las piezas sobresalientes del modelo, de gran nivel de detalle, así como los pozos del tren de aterrizaje, que están muy bien conseguidos y que en otros modelos suelen venir sin detalle alguno. Bajo las alas puede llevar opcionalmente una bomba de 227 kilos o dos de 45, según la versión que decidamos hacer.
La hoja de calcas es de gran calidad y las instrucciones muestran una versión del Escuadrón de Bombardeo 41 de la U.S. Navy, y otra del Cuerpo de Marines. En este tipo de aviones lo más difícil de conseguir son los tonos de azul y gris más apropiados al ser colores intermedios y mezclados, pero las instrucciones también reflejan la proporción correcta de pintura en ambas versiones.
En resumen, una maqueta muy elogiable por su gran calidad en todos los terrenos y que con seguridad dará excelentes resultados a cualquier modelista.◊
This Hasegawa Dauntless is not the same version of the plane that took part successfully at Midway but the model which came after the famous SBD-3. The differences between them were not, apparently at least, many. In general, this kit is outstanding in most aspects and it has a high average quality. It is perhaps one of the best I have seen at this scale.
The kit consists of eight sprues of different size (more than 40 parts) and the decal sheet. The canopy is divided into three parts to show it open, a fact that it is unusual at this scale. As regards the plastic, it has an excellent quality and it is finely detailed so I do not think the modeler will have especial difficulties when assembling the parts. The outboard flaps in this plane consisted of a metallic perforated board painted in red inside which would look better if you can get them made of PE, but the model can also look great if you build it from the box.
The cockpit is better detailed than it is usual at this scale, and you have four tiny decals for the instrument panel. The engine part also stands out as do the wheel wells, which are more and better detailed than in other models. You also have options for the armament: one 500lb bomb or two of 100lb depending on the version you want to build.
The decal sheet is nice and the instructions show a plane belonging to U.S. Navy VB-41, and another one from the U.S. Marine Corps. In this kind of plane the most difficult thing to achieve is the correct blue and green shades because they are intermediate colours, but the instructions also tell us the correct proportion in both versions.
To sum up, this Dauntless is a model that rates high in every aspect we can consider and it will surely give more than a good result to any modeler. It is definitely a good value.◊
