VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Sobresaliente maqueta. Muy detallada para la escala, sencilla de montar y precio muy bueno. Muy recomendable.

Esta es la segunda maqueta dedicada por Italeri al Falco. En este caso se trata de la versión AS (Africa Settentrionale), que se refiere a aparatos que combatieron en unidades de Assalto (ataque al suelo) en tierras africanas. Al contrario que en la primera entrega, con seis opciones dedicadas a unidades de caza italianas, de caza nocturna alemanas y una versión sueca con esquíes, esta sólo tiene cuatro opciones y tres de ellas muestran el mismo tipo de camuflaje lagarto (a ramarro). Externamente, la única diferencia con otros Falcos es la adopción del filtro de entrada de aire al carburador y las bombas.
Con ser idéntico molde, y un molde excepcionalmente bueno, sin embargo la ausencia de algunos detalles menores, que sí se incluyen en la primera maqueta, dejan la sensación de que, con poco más, se podría haber redondeado aún más este producto. Concretamente me refiero a la ausencia del folleto sobre el aparato y al hecho de que las grapas vuelven a aparecer sin bolsas, siguiendo la tradición del fabricante. He podido conseguir una copia del libreto del primer Falco y el motivo de su ausencia aquí, según se expresa en el mismo, es que Italeri lo ha realizado para las dos maquetas, pero sólo lo proporciona para una de ellas por mucho que parte de la información que contiene el folleto de marras es relevante también para la versión africana. De este modo, el modelista que adquiera sólo la versión AS, se queda sin esa información.
En lo esencial, la maqueta es tan buena como la primera e incluso algo más barata. La componen dos grapas de mediano tamaño de la que se han excluido piezas innecesarias del primer Falco, como los esquíes o los apagallamas de la versión nocturna. Las piezas son finas, con formas y relieves bien detallados, sin rebabas, paneles incisos y se puede prever un montaje rápido y nada complicado. Para colmo de bienes, hay pocas riostras que montar y los detalles están muy cuidados, como por ejemplo los pequeños actuadores de los flaps del ala superior. Los relieves del fuselaje y las alas están muy bien conseguidos, aunque quizá algo exagerados en éstas. A mi juicio las dos partes que sobresalen en la maqueta son el interior (de los más completos que he visto a esta escala), y el motor, que no tiene nada que envidiar a los de resina de los CR.42 de Pavla. Una de las opciones puede montarse sin las carenas en las ruedas, dejando ver parte de los detalles del tren de aterrizaje.
La hoja de calcas es muy buena, con cuatro opciones en lugar de las seis de la entrega anterior. Los colores están muy bien conseguidos y presentan además poca película de soporte. Incluyen los cinturones del piloto, el panel de instrumentos y algunos otros aparatos de la carlinga. Las instrucciones incluyen un paso a paso muy claro y se complementan con la parte posterior de la caja donde aparecen también las opciones de pintura pero en color.
Estamos ante un gran paso adelante en el catálogo de Italeri a 1/72, lo que aún desconocemos es si esta será la tónica de futuras ediciones, o si se trata sólo de algo excepcional. Indudablemente esta maqueta es más recomendable que las de Pavla, que presentan los habituales problemas de las ediciones limitadas. Aun tratándose de un producto más común, el Falco del fabricante italiano es excepcionalmente simple de montar, está muy detallado y es ideal para cualquier modelista con un poco de experiencia.◊
This is the second kit of the Falco from Italeri. This time we have the AS (Africa Settentrionale) version, which refers to the Assalto (ground attack) units which fought in North Africa. The first release comprises six options for Italian fighters, German night fighters and a Swedish version with skis, this one only has four, most of them showing CR.42s with the standard lizard camo scheme (a ramarro). Externally the only difference with other Falcos are the adoption of a new dust filter for the carburetor intake and of course the bombs.
Being the same tooling, and a really outstanding one, the lack of some minor details which were present in the first kit makes us feel a bit disappointed. I refer to the booklet full of technical and historical information, walkaround pics and the like, and also to the unbagged content, which has always been usual for Italeri kits but was an exception in their first Falco. I have got a copy of the booklet in question and it clearly states that it is aimed at both kits. It seems you are not supposed to buy only this second release.
In the relevant aspects this release is as good as the first, and even better because it is cheaper. There are two medium-size sprues without the unnecessary parts for the AS version, such as the skis and the exhausts of the night version which were included in the other Falco. The parts are really thin and clean, with fine shapes, engraved panel lines and no flash which normally means a fast and easy build. For once there are only a few struts to build and the details have been nicely moulded, such as the small actuators on the upper wing. Rib details on both fuselage and wings is excellent, perhaps only a bit oversized on wings only. I think the best details are in the cockpit (one of the best I’ve seen at the scale) and the engine, which has nothing to envy those from Pavla’s CR.42s. One of the building choices can be assembled without the wheel spats showing part of the details in the landing gear.
The decal sheet is also excellent with a choice of markings for four aircraft, all of them belonging to ground attack Italian units. The colours are fine and they have little carrier film. There are also decals for the instrument panel and other gadgets on the cockpit sides and for the seat belts. The instructions show an easy and clear assembly and they are rounded off with colour profiles for the four options on the back of the box.
Unquestionably this is another step forward for Italeri 1/72 catalogue. If this is their future way for new kits or just an exception is still to be seen. This is a more recommendable kit than Pavla’s Falco, which has the usual limitations of the short-run products. Even though this is a mainstream kit, Italeri’s CR.42 is easy to build, comes with a very good level of detail and can be an option for any modeler with a little experience.◊
