CALCAS – DECALS:
- Bien en calidad y cantidad. Se incluyen los estencils más pequeños, aunque tienen demasiada película transparente. Las calcas blancas para los hinomarus tienden al amarillo, pero sobre el modelo, las de Hasegawa no suelen notarse. Bonitas marcas de unidad.
- Pretty good in quality and quantity. The smallest stencils are included, but have too much film. White decals for hinomarus look a bit yellowish, but Hasegawa’s usually look good on the model. Beautiful unit markings.

LO MEJOR – THE BEST:
- Buenas formas. Fácil de montar. Decoración bonita.
- Good shape. Easy assembly. Beautiful decoration.
LO PEOR – THE WORST:
- Panelado extremadamente fino y falto de profundidad. Interior pobre. Pozos sin detalle.
- Panel lines are too thin and shallow. Poor interior. Wheel wells with no detail.
VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Maqueta desigual. La calidad del molde contrasta con la falta de detalles interiores. Ideal si no pensamos dedicar mucho tiempo a detallarlo por dentro.
- Uneven kit. The tooling quality contrasts with the lack of interior details. A good option if you aren’t the mad-about-detail type.
Este Hien es una edición anterior (años 90) del actual modelo de Hasegawa. Aunque no he visto esa maqueta, imagino que traerá pocos o ningún cambio respecto a esta, excepto la caja. A este pequeño Tony le pasa como al Raiden en la misma colección que comento más abajo: parece falto de piezas y sin embargo tiene en total 34. A veces el tamaño engaña. Se presenta en dos bandejas más otra con el transparente y la hoja de calcas. El montaje en sí no presenta dificultad alguna, salvo (como es ya habitual en esta marca) el interior de la carlinga, que necesita un buen detallado, pues aparte del piloto, el asiento y el panel de instrumentos con calca, no hay nada más. Los paneles en alas y fuselaje vienen escasamente detallados para mi gusto, y pueden perder detalle al pintarlos. Tal vez habría que volverlos a trazar antes de ponerse a pintarlos. Por lo demás, las piezas no traen restos de rebabas y el encaje parece bueno. Opciones de montaje hay pocas por no decir ninguna, como extra incluye dos depósitos suplementarios que van en amarillo anaranjado. Además de la figura del piloto, hay otra en pie saludando con base.
Las calcas son un caso aparte, ya que las trae en gran profusión y además pequeñas, por lo que habrá que usar toda la reserva de paciencia de la que seamos capaces. Eso sí, si superamos esta fase con éxito, este pequeño modelo puede ganar mucho con ellas. Hay dos opciones de pintura. La primera es la que representa la caja, cuyo aparato perteneció al Mayor Kobayashi del 224º Sentai radicado en Chofu (junto a Tokyo) en 1945. La segunda pertenece a un caza del 17º Sentai que combatió en Leyte a fines de 1944. En este caso la mayor parte de avión se pinta plateado. Ignoro si estas opciones han cambiado en la última reedición de esta maqueta.
No creo que sea esta un modelo que nos dé muchos quebraderos de cabeza y puede ser ideal para el inexperto por no ser exigente ni en número de piezas ni en la dificultad de trabajar con ellas. Y además, por su tamaño, puede ser muy agradecido al terminarlo.◊
This Hien is a former edition (dated back in the 90s) of the present Hasegawa model. Though I have not seen the latest Ki-61-I kit, I imagine it will not change much from this one except for the box. This small Tony looks very much like the Raiden in the same series: at first look there seems to be few parts but there are 33 in all. Appearances are sometimes deceptive. The three sprues (one of them of clear parts) come in only one plastic bag with the decal sheet. Apparently, building the kit has no difficulty except for the interior cockpit (as it is usual), which needs a lot of detailing work. Apart from the pilot figure, the seat and the instrument panel with its decal, there is not anything else. The panel lines in wings and fuselage are not very well detailed in my opinion, and maybe they could not be seen after painting them. They may well deserve to be traced again with a scribber. As to the rest, the fitting of parts seems good. There are few assembly options, as an extra the kit includes two drop tanks which should be painted in orange yellow. There are two figures this time, a pilot and another saluting standing pilot with base.
In contrast, there are lots of tiny decals and the modeler will have to resort to his last drop of patience. Of course, once we have gone beyond this point, this little model can look really cool. As painting options, you have two possibilities. The first is the one shown on the box with the typical IJA colours, a Hien which belonged to Major Kobayashi in 224th Sentai from Chofu air base (near Tokyo) in 1945. The second option is for a fighter belonging to 17th Sentai that fought in Leyte in 1944. In this version most of the plane is painted in silver. I do not know whether these options have changed in the last reboxing of the kit.
I do not think this model will give you much pain to build and paint it and it can be quite handy for those modelers with less experience because it is not demanding either in the number of parts or the difficulty to work with them. Furthermore, it can have a really nice look once you finish it.◊
