LO MEJOR – THE BEST:
- Excelente apariencia general. Buen molde (aunque antiguo). Fácil montaje. Varias opciones bajo las alas (cohetes, depósitos). Calcas muy buenas y completas.
- Excellent general shape. Good tooling (but old). Easy build. Several underwing options. Fine decals.
LO PEOR – THE WORST:
- Paneles más finos en relieve. Interior poco detallado. Pozos del tren de aterrizaje vacíos.
- Thinnest panel lines are raised. Poor interior cockpit. Empty wheel wells.
VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Muy buena maqueta, aunque algo mejorable. Recomendable a cualquier modelista con algo de experiencia en calcas difíciles y colores plateados.
- Very good kit, but still improvable. Recommended to any modeler with some experience in difficult decals and silver paint.
Esta maqueta es sencillamente excelente. Si a alguien le gusta hacer cazas que pertenecieron a ases famosos de la aviación, del Barón Rojo en adelante, esta es uno de sus modelos. Y no sólo por la calidad general que tiene, sino también porque debe ser una de las mejores maquetas de Hasegawa en la colección. Representa el aparato del Mayor Richard Ira Bong, as de la aviación norteamericana de todos los tiempos, y uno de los pilotos con más derribos enemigos en su haber.
El contenido de la caja comprende tres sencillas bandejas más la de transparentes, que no muestran a simple vista la cantidad de piezas que traen. En la bandeja de transparentes nos sobrarán también un par de piezas (incluso una carlinga) que Hasegawa nos regala para la caja de sobrantes. Qué lujo. Se incluye una magnífica hoja de calcomanías muy bien impresa y con mucho detalle, con nada menos que 46 transferibles. Trae hasta el más pequeño rótulo del aparato de Bong. Hay así mismo calcas para el morro del avión que necesitarán de mucha paciencia y habilidad para colocarlas, pues están situadas en una de las zonas más difíciles y que más se ven. La alternativa es usar nuestras propias mascarillas, pero aún con su dificultad, si no se es muy ducho con la cinta, recomiendo usar las calcas.
Las piezas vienen muy bien fabricadas. Tanto, que apenas se ven marcas o rebabas. Poca lija y masilla habremos de usar, pues el encaje a simple vista parece perfecto. Los paneles aparecen muy bien marcados, especialmente en las superficies de control. Las piezas del fuselaje de los motores son especialmente elegantes y representan muy bien el avión real. La maqueta incluye la figura del piloto (no podía ser menos tratándose de un avión «personal»), y como complemento tenemos un par de depósitos auxiliares y dos lanzadores de cohetes bajo las alas.
Lástima que para llegar al sobresaliente a este modelo le falten dos cosas: un interior más completo y unos pozos del tren de aterrizaje detallados. Del primero se nos proporciona el piloto, el suelo, la palanca de mandos, una pieza para el panel de mandos con su calca y un asiento que parece sobredimensionado. Bong parece estar viendo la TV en casa, sentado en su sillón favorito. Sobre los pozos no se puede comentar nada, pues nada hay en ellos. Es lástima porque el tren de aterrizaje está muy bien conseguido y además lleva unas ruedas estupendas. Este modelo está pidiendo a voces un superdetallado de estas zonas, y casi parece que es lo que el fabricante pretende en realidad.
Las instrucciones constan de ocho etapas fáciles de seguir. Esta vez parece que Hasegawa ha echado el resto con ellas, pues son más grandes que de costumbre. En realidad, toda la maqueta lo es, incluso la caja. Un detalle importante al montar las hélices es que tenían sentido de giro contrario. Este detalle viene claramente señalado, pero no sería difícil pasarlo por alto dada la cantidad de piezas que hay que montar en cada etapa de construcción. También es aconsejable dejar para el final el montaje de los depósitos y cohetes, pues nos estorbarán para colocar las calcas.
Obviamente, la única versión del P-38 es la ya mencionada del Mayor Bong perteneciente al 5º Mando de Cazas en noviembre de 1944. El color es plateado, a excepción de morro. Los derribos japoneses marcados en el lado izquierdo de su fuselaje nos indican que Bong era para entonces uno de los ases de la contienda.
En resumen, recomendaría este bonito modelo del Lightning a modelistas con cierta experiencia. La construcción no va a darnos especiales dificultades, pero pueden darlas el color plateado y las calcas a menos que se haya visto uno antes en estas lides. Adecuadamente detallado y en manos de un modelista pacienzudo, esta maqueta resaltará en cualquier colección.◊
This kit is simply excellent. If you like building fighters which belonged to famous aces, from the Red Baron onwards, this is one of your choices. And not only because it has a high level of accuracy, but also because it must be one of the best Hasegawa models in the collection. It represents Major Richard Ira Bong’s aircraft, perhaps the U.S. pilot with more victories ever.
The content of the box comprises three dark grey plastic and one clear sprues. At first sight it does not seem to be so many parts. In the clear sprue there are also some parts not for use (even a canopy) which Hasegawa gives us for the spare box. You are provided with a superb decal sheet as well. It is thin and finely printed, and you have no less than 46 items. Even the smallest sign on Bong’s aircraft is included. There are decals for the dark brown nose. These will need tons of patience and more than standard modeling skill to set them, because this area is one of the most difficult of the model. Alternatively, you can also use your own mask, but I recommend the decals if you are not skilled with the tape.
Parts are quite finely moulded. So much, that I can seldom see any pin marks on them. Few sanding and putty will be needed because fitting seems almost perfect. The panels are very well done, especially on the control surfaces. The twin fuselage is thin and elegant, and it is accurately represented. The kit includes the pilot (remember this is a ‘personal’ fighter), and, as undercarriage, a couple of auxiliary fuel tanks and two rocket launchers.
It is a shame, but this kit could have been superb if two things were not missing: a better interior and more detailed wheel wells. To build the first you are provided with a pilot, a floor, control stick, instrument panel with a decal for it and an oversized seat. Bong seems to be at home watching TV sitting on his favourite armchair. A real shame, because the landing gear and wheels are very cool. This kit is calling for a superdetailing work for both areas, and it even seems that was Hasegawa’s real intention.
The instructions show eight building steps which are easy to follow. This time Hasegawa seems to have made an especial effort because they are bigger than usual for a fighter in the collection. In fact, everything is bigger in this kit, even the box. There is an important detail when you assemble the propellers: one of them spinned clockwise and the other anticlockwise. This is clearly shown but you can be easily mistaken because of the great number of parts you have to assemble on every stage. It is also advisable to set the decals before you glue the tanks and launchers, otherwise these will be a drag.
Obviously, the only P-38 version here is the above mentioned for Major Bong’s aircraft belonging to the 5th Fighter Command in November 1944. The tiny flags for victories on the left side of the fuselage tell us Bong was already a war ace by then. The colour is overall silver, except for the nose.
I would recommend this beautiful Lightning kit to modelers with some experience. Building it will not be a hard task, but the silver painting and the decals can be unless you have been around before. Finely detailed in the hands of a very patient and skilled modeler it will be outstanding in any collection.◊
