LO MEJOR – THE BEST:
- Molde muy limpio y bien fabricado. Carlinga muy detallada. Incluye mascarillas. Versiones atractivas en esta edición.
- Outstandingly clean and well-made model. Superbly detailed cockpit. Masks included. Attractive paint versions in this box.
LO PEOR – THE WORST:
- Cubierta de una pieza. Tamaño de algunas secuencias de montaje en las instrucciones.
- One-piece canopy. Size of some exploded views in the instructions.
VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Salvando encajes (no comprobados), una maqueta sorprendentemente detallada para la escala. Para modelistas con cierta experiencia.
- Excepting part fitting (not checked), a surprisingly nice kit of an intermediate Bf 109 variant. For modellers with some experience.
AZ Model le ha dedicado un buen porte de ediciones a las versiones finales del Bf 109, concretamente de la F a la K. Creo que a estas alturas debe haber ya producido todas las variantes de estos modelos, o casi. La edición que describo aquí resulta especialmente atractiva por varios motivos. Uno de ellos es el estar dedicada a aviones empleados por el as alemán H. J. Marseille en la escuadrilla JG 27 en el norte de África. Aunque el molde y las instrucciones son comunes a otras ediciones anteriores, la caja señala que esta es una edición limitada a 500 unidades, e incluye una hoja de mascarillas, ausentes en entregas anteriores.
La caja contiene dos bastidores de piezas, dos hojas de calcas, una hoja de mascarillas, un bastidor transparente y las instrucciones. Como es habitual, el contenido está protegido en una bolsa con pestaña sellada y el bastidor transparente viene también en su propia bolsa. El plástico recuerda mucho al más reciente de Special Hobby en calidad, y las piezas destacan por su buen moldeado y grosor razonable para la escala. No hay rastro de rebabas ni siquiera en las hélices y las pocas marcar de eyector se reducen a sitios no visibles. La limpieza y el moldeado son, pues, excelentes.
Los paneles son finos y están grabados con precisión al igual que los registros. AZ ha conseguido representar incluso los diminutos, casi imperceptibles, remaches en las superficies inferiores de las alas. Deben estar realmente a escala y parece que por ello condenados a desaparecer bajo la primera capa de pintura por fina que sea. El despiece de la maqueta es clásico: fuselaje y alas en mitades, solo que estas no son simétricas en la cola y las puntas.
Para lo que se estila en esta escala, la carlinga viene fenomenalmente detallada. Además de los instrumentos en relieve en ambas mitades del fuselaje, hay un suelo, moldeado de una pieza con el panel trasero y que incorpora también el respaldo del asiento y la zona trasera del compartimiento de equipaje. Piezas separadas son el fondo del asiento, las ruedas compensadoras, la palanca de mandos, el panel delantero, los pedales (convincentes), el panel de instrumentos (provisto de calca para los indicadores), la mira (pieza transparente) y la culata del cañón MG151. Las instrucciones no los mencionan, pero en la hoja de calcas tenemos cinturones para añadirlos al asiento.
Las mitades del fuselaje están bien detalladas por fuera. Muestran líneas de paneles y registros realistas en anchura y profundidad. Las mitades, ya se ha dicho, no son simétricas, la derecha tiene cortada la cola a la altura del timón y los estabilizadores. Este despiece, corriente en otras maquetas, hace ganar en finura y realismo, pero se paga en líneas de unión que disimular.
Los escapes vienen separados en dos piezas que se colocan desde dentro del fuselaje en las ranuras provistas a tal efecto. La parte superior del capó es una sección separada que muestra buen detalle en las salidas del armamento. Hay dos tubitos de plástico muy pequeños representando las MG17, dispuestos, como bien señalan las instrucciones, desiguales en longitud. Aunque las instrucciones indican que han de horadarse los agujeros de salida en el capó, estos ya vienen abiertos. La toma del sobrealimentador a babor tiene dos filtros opcionales. Obviamente, el que corresponde incluir es el tropical, cuyo despiece es similar al de la maqueta de Italeri. También hay dos tomas de refrigeración del circuito de aceite opcionales bajo el morro, según la variante del modelo F. Hay además dos hélices bien moldeadas según la versión elegida y el buje posee buen perfil, con la abertura del cañón MG151 detallada y horadada.
Como he descrito, las alas vienen en mitades con las puntas y los alerones moldeados en las mitades superiores. Al igual que en el caso del fuselaje, el despiece gana en realismo, pero deja líneas de unión coincidentes con paneles. Los paneles y registros están bien trazados, así como las luces de las puntas. Las caras inferiores incluyen los carenados de los radiadores abiertos por delante y con aletas separadas por detrás. Los carenados tienen buen aspecto y parecen a escala, contrariamente a otras maquetas de este avión. Los estabilizadores son piezas completas, sin soportes como corresponde a este modelo, y provistos de aletas de unión a la cola.
Bajo las alas, además de los compensadores de los flaps, se pueden incluir varias opciones: carenas y tubos del armamento subalar, una bomba con soporte separado, un depósito con soporte separado, o bien un panel ventral que alojaba la cámara en las versiones de reconocimiento. El depósito (Rüstsatz R3) me parece lo más destacable del conjunto, sin desmerecer el resto.
El tren de aterrizaje lo forman una rueda de cola provista de pata, dos excelentes ruedas correctamente detalladas por ambas caras con magnífico detalle en las bandas de rodadura, dos patas y dos tapas. La estructura de los pozos se encuentra moldeada en la cara interna de la mitad superior de las alas.
El bastidor transparente incluye la mira, la cubierta de la carlinga y un panel extra simulando el blindaje del parabrisas, que es opcional. Aunque la cubierta es fina y su marco está bien realizado, viene de una pieza y no podemos mostrarla abierta para destacar el interior. Como ya he dicho, AZ ha incluido en la maqueta una útil hoja de mascarillas, ya presente en otras ediciones de los modelos F y G aparecida también en 2019.
Una de las hojas de calcas incluye líneas de pisado más decenas de diminutos estarcidos para el fuselaje, las alas y el depósito. La segunda hoja contiene las marcas específicas de esta caja, donde encontramos insignias alemanas, insignias de unidad, el numeral 14 de Marseille en Libia, los indicadores del panel y los cinturones del piloto. Las hojas están muy bien impresas, los motivos parecen finos y muestran buenos colores.
Las instrucciones, comunes a varias ediciones, están impresas a color en una hoja doblada formando cuatro páginas. Muestran una introducción histórica, un plano numerado de piezas, 19 secciones de montaje y perfiles para situar los estarcidos. La caja muestra por ambas caras perfiles para pintar y códigos de esmaltes de Humbrol. La hoja es clara y las indicaciones de montaje demuestran que AZ ha estudiado bien el avión, pero algunas ilustraciones son demasiado pequeñas. Es lástima que algunas maquetas, como es el caso, no tengan unas instrucciones a la altura del buen producto que ofrecen.
En resumen, la maqueta tiene un valor notable en su despiece no excesivo, un detalle excelente y las varias opciones de montaje posibles. La inclusión de las mascarillas es un aliciente más por lo mucho que facilita el trabajo de pintura. Pese a que se trata de una edición de corta tirada y que no hago pruebas de montaje, la maqueta es muy recomendable salvo a los principiantes. Me ha gustado tanto este F, que estoy por darle un tiento también a la maqueta del G algún día.◊
AZ Models have released a good bunch of boxes dedicated to the medium-late variants of the Bf 109, specifically from the F to K model. I think they must have kitted all the subvariants so far, sort of. This edition I review here is especially attractive for several reasons. One of them is that it tries to render some of the German ace H. J. Marseille´s mounts while fighting in Lybia with the JG 27. Though the sprues and the instructions are shared by other previous releases, the box reads that this is a limited edition of 500 units and includes an extra mask sheet which was not included in previous releases.
The box contains two plastic sprues, two decal sheets, the mask sheet already mentioned, a clear sprue and the instructions. As usual, the content comes inside a self-sealing bag, the clear parts being also contained in their own separate bag. Plastic reminds me that of the latest Special Hobby kits in quality. Parts have an outstanding molding and show more than reasonable thickness for the scale. The modeller won´t find any flash, not even on the propellers, and sink marks are few and reduced to hidden spots once the kit is finished. If you have ever given a try to an AZ kit, you may think this is just the same tune. You are wrong.
Panel lines as well as registers are thin and sharply engraved. AZ have achieved to represent even the tiniest rivets on some underwing surfaces. So tiny and delicate they are, that they will most probably disappear after the first paint layer, no matter how thinned it is. The kit breakdown is the standard two halves for fuselage and wings, but tail and wingtips do not match as they are not symmetrical.
Comparing with most kits at this scale, the cockpit is superbly detailed, and that without PE bits. Apart from the raised instruments on both fuselage walls, there is a floor molded with the rear bulkhead, that also has the backrest molded on, and the rear cockpit section comprising the baggage compartment. Separate parts are the tail trim handwheels, the stick, the front bulkhead, the pedals (convincing), the instrument panel (with a decal for the gadgets), the sight (a clear part) and the MG151 gun housing. Instruction do not mention it, but the decal sheet also includes the pilot´s belts.
The fuselage is also nicely detailed on the outer sides. They show realistic engraved panels and registers that seem at scale both in depth and width. As said the halves are not symmetrical, the starboard half does not include the rudder and part of the fin, this being molded up to the stabilizers. This breakup, also common in other kits, makes the finished model gain in finesse and realism but you have more seam lines to fill.
Exhausts come lined up on two single pieces and are attached into slots from the inside of the fuselage. The upper cowling is a separate section with a nice rendering of the of the machine-gun troughs. There are two tiny separate rods for the MG17s which are to be attached unaligned in length, as the instructions correctly point out. Though instructions also show that machine-gun openings are to be drilled, these in fact come already open. The supercharger air intake on the port fuselage has two optional filters. Obviously, the aircraft included in this release carried the tropical filter, which comes in three pieces. There are two optional oil cooler intakes and propellers, according to the variant of the F model you wish to build. Propellers are finely molded as well as the spinner, which has a nice MG151 cannon muzzle.
As described, wings come in halves with wingtips and ailerons molded on the upper sides. As in the fuselage, this breakup has its highs and lows. In this case seam lines match panel lines. Panels, registers and navigation lights are nicely engraved here too. The inner sides include the radiator fairings, which have a front opening and separate rear flaps. Fairings look nice and seem to scale, contrary to other Bf 109 kits. Stabilizers are separate pieces with insertion tabs.
Apart from the balances, you have a choice to include under the wings: machine-guns in underwing gondolas with separate barrels, a bomb and its rack, a Rüstsatz R3 fuel tank also with separate rack or a ventral camera panel for the reconnaissance versions. Underwing armament and the camera panel are not applicable to the versions in this box, but you may wish to keep them in your spare box.
The landing gear comprise a tailwheel molded with the strut, two excellent wheels detailed on both sides with a good rendering of the tread pattern, two struts and two covers. The wheel well structure is molded on the inner face of each wing upper half.
The clear sprue includes the aiming sight, the canopy and an optional extra panel that represents the windshield armour. Though the canopy is reasonably thin and the frames are nice, it is molded in one piece and cannot be posed open to show the cockpit. As said, AZ have included a useful mask sheet, which will come handy to make paint work easier.
One of the decal sheets includes no step lines plus dozens of tiny stencils for fuselage, wings and drop tank. The second sheet has the specific markings for this release and we find German crosses and svastikas, unit badges, a number 14 belonging to Marseille´s mount in Lybia, panel gadgets and the pilot´s belts. Both sheets are well printed, decals look thin and show nice color saturation.
The instructions are shared by several kits and are printed in color on a folded sheet comprising four pages. They show a brief historical introduction to the aircraft, a parts location plan, 19 assembly chapters and profiles to set the stencils. The box shows profiles on both sides to paint the kit and a list of Humbrol enamels as reference. The instructions are overall clear and proof that AZ have studied the aircraft thoroughly, but some views are simply too small. It is a shame some companies, as it is the case, do not have instructions on the same level as the product they offer.
In short, this is an outstanding kit of a popular aircraft without too many parts to get you bored, excellent detail and several assembly options. The inclusion of the mask sheet is another incentive as it simplifies painting. Though this is a short run edition and I have not tested part fitting, the kit seems highly recommendable except for beginners. I liked this F so much, that I may give the G model a try one of these days.◊
