La maqueta
Con esta maqueta Airfix inauguró su nuevo molde del MiG-17, del que ya tenemos hasta una secuela más reciente en la forma de un LIM-5 con calcas de Alemania Oriental y Polonia. Probablemente veremos más versiones de este prolífico avión.
La caja contiene cuatro bastidores, uno de ellos transparente, las calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico está bien moldeado y muestra escasa marcas en lugares no visibles. Las piezas están limpias y poseen buen detalle en general. No contienen rebabas y algunas tienen líneas de molde muy finas y aceptables en cualquier maqueta. Hay restos de salida del eyector en determinadas piezas pero son sencillas de eliminar.
La maqueta ofrece varias opciones de montaje, algunas habituales en Airfix, como la posibilidad de plegar o no el tren de aterrizaje, y otras no tan usuales, como la apertura de los aerofrenos o la cubierta de la carlinga. Como también es costumbre, el número de piezas no es elevado y el montaje aparenta bastante sencillez, lo que puede hacerla apetecible a modelistas del común.
La maqueta representa un MiG-17F, Fresco-C para la OTAN, en su versión china, denominada Shenyang J-5, empleada no sólo por China, sino también exportada a Vietnam del Norte.
Carlinga
Parece mejor detallada que en otras maquetas de la marca. Los lados de la carlinga son dos piezas unidas al deflector de la toma delantera. Ambas mitades forman dos huecos, uno para contener la carlinga, y otro para alojar el peso que debemos añadirle al modelo para que no se caiga de cola. La parte inferior de este hueco contiene además el pozo de la rueda delantera, que tienen algún detalle en relieve.
La carlinga posee calcas para detallar el panel de instrumentos y las consolas laterales, así como un suelo sobre el que pegar el asiento y la palanca. El asiento viene en dos piezas con el reposacabezas unido al respaldo. Las mitades muestran los cinturones del piloto en ligero relieve. Lo que menos me convence, por su poca definición y escaso tamaño, son los reposapiés, pero el hecho de que traiga los cinturones ya es algo. No recuerdo haberlos visto en ninguna otra maqueta de Airfix a esta escala, aunque probablemente la habrá, supongo. La mira es una pieza transparente. Como de costumbre, la maqueta vuelve a incluir una figura de piloto bastante mediocre, además de patilargo y patifino.
Fuselaje
Las mitades incluyen la deriva, la aleta situada bajo el fuselaje hacia cola y las raíces de las alas. Hay huecos para las tapas de los aerofrenos y la sección del morro bajo el fuselaje que contienen el armamento y el pozo delantero. Las líneas de los paneles externos son finas y convincentes para esta escala, los registros están bien grabados y algunos paneles presentan un fino remachado.
El fuselaje cuenta con dos huecos para instalar los radares ventrales, que son piezas transparentes. La sección separada bajo el morro está moldeada con parte del anillo frontal de la toma. El resto del anillo es una pieza separada que muestra la cámara del cañón. El panel del armamento lleva las salidas de las vainas de la munición marcadas aunque ciegas, excepto la del cañón de 37 mm. Los cañones vienen separados y moldeados con sus carenas. El mástil de la antena viene aparte moldeado con una diminuta base que le da la orientación adecuada al pegarlo al fuselaje.
La tobera está separada y consiste en cuatro piezas: dos lados, un anillo externo y una pieza interior que lleva simulados parte de los álabes. La tobera es opcional según deseemos mostrar los aerofrenos abiertos o no. En el primer caso, los lados de la tobera llevan moldeados el detalle interno pero de forma poco nítida. Los aerofrenos también son opcionales y sólo los que van abiertos muestran detalle interno, en este caso mejor, y las piezas van unidas al brazo de apertura.
La cubierta de la carlinga vienen en dos secciones, lo que permite mostrarla abierta. La sección corrediza es opcional y puede llevar el retrovisor o no. El panel blindado frontal está bien perfilado. Las piezas son muy transparentes y no excesivamente gruesas.
Alas y cola
Las alas están fabricadas en mitades provistas en su lado superior de pestañas para insertarlas en las raíces de las alas. Las líneas de paneles y registros están bien grabadas y son finas. Algunos accesos aparecen ademas remachados, aunque muy tenuemente. Las mitades superiores llevan el detalle del interior del pozo grabado, aunque el pozo es escasamente profundo.
La luz de aterrizaje es una pieza transparente y las de posición bajo las alas vienen bien definidas. Sin embargo, el alambrado me parece un poco grueso para la escala y no guarda mucho parecido con el que Eduard consigue en sus MiG-15, por ejemplo. Los tubos Pitot vienen separados.
Antes de pegar las alas han de abrirse los agujeros para instalar la carga subalar que deseemos incluir en la maqueta posteriormente. Las instrucciones sólo señalan la presencia de dos depósitos opcionales que están despiezados en mitades con soportes separados. Pero la maqueta trae igualmente los lanzacohetes UB-16-57, que van unidos a sus soportes y tienen la parte anterior separada. Hay también lo que parecen cuatro misiles aire-aire en sus lanzadores moldeados en dos piezas. Su parecido no es, desde luego, el de los Vympel R-3 que podría llevar un MiG-17F.
Los estabilizadores presentan buen detalle en las líneas de paneles y son bastante finos. El timón de dirección viene en dos secciones finas y bien grabadas.
Tren de aterrizaje
La pata delantera está moldeada con la rueda. La pieza muestra buen detalle en el brazo de torsión y en la horquilla, si bien hubiese sido mucho mejor si la rueda estuviese separada y mejor detallada, ya que resulta poco realista.
El tren principal consta de dobles tapas en el pozo que están bien detalladas por dentro, dos patas aceptables pero con detalle poco definido y dos ruedas con nulo detalle en la banda de rodadura, pero algo mejor tanto en los lados de los neumáticos como en las llantas. También se ofrece la posibilidad de mostrar el tren de aterrizaje plegado con tapas opcionales para ello.
La maqueta trae un bidón separado en dos piezas para colocarlo bajo la cola, como se solía hacer para amortiguar el peso a cola estando el avión en tierra.
Calcas
La hoja está bien impresa y los motivos son finos, sin exceso de soporte y saturados de color. La hoja incluye insignias de Vietnam del Norte y rusas, numerales, el panel de instrumentos y las consolas, así como rótulos en ruso y variados estarcidos.
Instrucciones
Consisten en un folleto A4 de 12 páginas impreso en color. Contiene un breve resumen histórico y técnico sobre el avión, 39 capítulos de montaje y dos hojas de perfiles. Las vistas son claras y las indicaciones complementarias son útiles durante el proceso de montaje, dando cuenta de las diferentes opciones con claridad. Las referencias de pintura son, como siempre, de Humbrol.
Las opciones de pintura elegidas en esta maqueta me parecen acertadas. Aunque la rusa es algo más anodina, representa un avión experimental, lo que no siempre es un tema frecuente en el modelismo. La versión vietnamita es atractiva por su camuflaje por mucho que el color de las zonas inferiores no sea del todo seguro. Esperemos que Airfix incluya otros países usuarios de este caza con variados camuflajes en futuras reediciones.
Valoración
Airfix sigue dando su nivel habitual con esta nueva maqueta. En esta ocasión incluso hay zonas como la carlinga que están algo mejor detalladas de los acostumbrado. La sencillez de montaje y las opciones de construcción agradarán a muchos, por eso la considero al alcance del modelista medio e incluso del que tenga habilidades básicas.
Todo pinta a que veremos más maquetas de este molde con calcas diferentes y quién sabe si también otros modelos del Fresco.◊
The kit
This is the first release of Airfix new tool MiG-17 but we already have a more recent rebox in the form of a LIM-5 with East German and Polish decals. We will probably see more versions of this prolific aircraft.
The box contains four sprues, one of them containing the clear parts, the decals and the instructions. Plastic is well molded and shows only a few marks in non-visible places. Pieces are clean and have good detail in general. They are flash-free and some have very thin seam lines that are acceptable on any kit. There are ejector pips on certain parts but they are easy to remove.
The kit offers several assembly options, some common in Airfix, such as showing the landing gear folded, and others not so common, such as the opening of the airbrakes or the canopy. As usual, the number of parts is not high and the assembly seems quite simple, which can make it appealing to average modellers.
The kit represents a MiG-17F, Fresco-C for NATO, in its Chinese version, called Shenyang J-5, used not only by China but also exported to North Vietnam.
Cockpit
It seems better detailed than in other kits. The cockpit sides are two pieces attached to the front intake center divider. When both halves are attached, they form two hollow sections, one to contain the cockpit, and the other to house the weight that we must add so that the model does not sit on the tail. The lower open side also contains the front well , which shows some raised detail.
The cockpit has decals to detail the instrument panel and side consoles, as well as a floor on which to attach the seat and control stick. The seat comes in two pieces with the headrest attached to the backrest. The halves show the pilot’s belts slightly raised. The footrests are not very convincing as they lack definition and looked undersized, but at least we have a seat with belts molded on. I don’t recall seeing them on any other Airfix kit at this scale, though there may be one, I guess. The sight is a clear piece. As usual, the kit once again includes a fairly mediocre long-legged pilot figure.
Fuselage
The halves include the fin, the lower fin fillet and the wing roots. There are gaps for the airbrake housings and the nose section under the fuselage carrying the armament and front well. External panel lines are fine and convincing for this scale, the registers are well engraved and some panels feature fine riveting.
The fuselage has two openings to install the ventral radars, which are clear pieces. The separate section under the nose is molded with part of the front intake ring. The rest of the ring is a separate piece showing the gun camera. The armament panel shows the ammo chutes but they are all closed, except for the 37mm cannon chute. The gun barrels come separated and molded with their fairings. The antenna mast comes separately molded with a tiny base that gives it the proper orientation when glued to the fuselage.
The nozzle is separate and consists of four parts: two sides, an outer ring and an inner part that tries to render the turbine blades. The nozzle is optional depending on whether we want to show the airbrakes open or not. In the first case, the sides of the nozzle have the internal detail molded but not neatly defined. The airbrakes are also optional and only the open set shows internal detail, in this case better, and the parts are molded with the opening jack.
The canopy comes in two sections, allowing it to be displayed open. The sliding section is optional, one of them including a mirror. The front armored panel is well profiled. The pieces are very transparent and not too thick.
Wings and tail
The wings are made in halves provided on their upper side with tabs to insert them into the wingroots. Panel lines are correctly engraved and fine. Some accesses are also riveted, although they look a bit soft. The upper wing show some detail corresponding to the bottom of the well, but this is a bit shallow for the wheels.
The landing light is a clear piece and the position lights under the wings are well defined. However, the fences look a bit thick for the scale and doesn’t bear much resemblance to what Eduard gets in their MiG-15s, for example. Pitot tubes come separate.
Before joining the wings, holes can be drilled to install the underwing load that we wish to include in the kit on a later step. The instructions only show two auxiliary fuel tanks which come in halves with separate supports. However, the kit also includes a pair of UB-16-57 rocket launchers, which are attached to their supports and have a separate front part. There are also what look like four air-to-air missiles on their two-piece launchers. They do not look like the Vympel R-3s that a MiG-17F could carry.
The stabilizers have nicely engraved panel lines and are quite thin. The rudder comes in two fine, well-engraved pieces.
Landing gear
The front leg is molded with the nosewheel. The piece shows good detail on the torque arm and fork, although it could have been much better if the wheel had been separate and better detailed, as it is unrealistic.
The main undercarriage consists of double covers in the well that show nice raised detail inside, two acceptable legs with a bit soft detail and two wheels with flat treads, but a bit better both on the sides of the tires and hubs. Also offered is the choice to pose the landing gear folded with optional covers.
The kit includes a separate fuel drum in two pieces to place it under the tail, as it was usual while the aircraft was on the ground.
Decals
The sheet is well printed and decals look thin, saturated and without too much carrier film. The sheet includes North Vietnamese and Russian markings, codes, the instrument panel and consoles, as well as Russian labels and stencils.
Instructions
They consist of a 12-page A4 brochure printed in colour. It contains a brief historical and technical summary of the aircraft, 39 assembly stages, and two pages of profiles. Exploded views are clear and callouts are helpful in the assembly process, clearly explaining the different options. Paint references are, as usual, from Humbrol.
The painting choice selected by Airfix is sensible. Although the Russian fighter looks somewhat dull in overall silver, it represents an experimental aircraft, which is not always a frequent modelling topic. The Vietnamese version sports an attractive and well-known camouflage, even though the color of the lower surfaces is not entirely certain. Hopefully Airfix will include other countries using this fighter with various camos in future reboxes.
Conclusion
Airfix continues to give their usual level with this new tool. This time there seems to be an improvement in detail in some areas, such as the cockpit, for example. Ease and choices of construction will please many, and this is why I consider it suitable for the average modeler and even for those with basic skills.
Everything indicates that we will see more kits like this with different decals and maybe a different Fresco variant in the future.◊
