Este Raiden es una buena maqueta que afortunadamente da más juego cuando uno se pone a montarla que al verla en la caja. Estoy manos a la obra con ella cuando escribo estas líneas, así que daré algunos datos más precisos. Básicamente el modelo se compone de dos bandejas de piezas, otra de transparentes y la hoja de calcas. No mucho a primera vista, pero, como digo, es un avión que agradece cada pequeño detalle que se le pone y que, una vez montado el fuselaje y las alas, es realmente bonito.
Aunque ya tiene sus años (esta edición es de 1992), el modelo no desmerece de otros más modernos, ni en su calidad de detalles, ni en el encaje de las piezas que es casi perfecto especialmente en esas partes problemáticas de las alas y el fuselaje. Un poco de lija sí habrá que usar para ajustar un poco el morro al fuselaje y el ventilador del motor, que debe ir colocado más adentro, y poco más. Quien desee complicarse la vida como yo, puede panelarlo con scribber pero no es en absoluto necesario ya que las líneas de los paneles están claramente marcadas y creo que se seguirían viendo tras pintarlas. Se pueden también sustituir los cañones del modelo por otros de tubo y quedarán de lujo. Incluso cuando se cometen errores, como me pasó a mí, el avión puede salir ganando. Lo peor es tal vez el poco detalle de la cabina. La calca que simula el panel de instrumentos está muy bien, pero el resto de piezas no pasa de normal.
Las calcas son de buena calidad, aunque las de mi modelo amarillean un poco. Hasegawa ha incluido dos versiones de este avión en sus instrucciones. Una, muy conocida, que pilotó el teniente Aoki del 352 Kokutai en 1945 y otra del 302 Kokutai. Ambas versiones apenas difieren en la forma de las palas de las hélices, pero la maqueta trae los dos tipos como opción y un tanque de combustible desechable (como se ve en algunas fuentes), que yo he decidido no usar. El esquema de color es el típico de verde oscuro y gris.
Como resumen, hay que decir que al modelista acostumbrado a esta escala, le llamará la atención el tamaño de este modelo. Comparativamente con otros cazas de su época era pequeño y liviano, y esto también está muy bien conseguido por Hasegawa. Tal vez ese sea el encanto de la maqueta una vez montada. Este es pues un avión muy recomendable y con el que seguro muchos, con más o menos experiencia, van a disfrutar.◊
This Raiden is a very good kit which, fortunately, is better when you start building it than when you watch it in the box. I am building it when writing these lines, so I will give some more data about it. Basically, the kit consists of two sprues with parts, another clear parts sprue and the decal sheet. Not much at first sight, but, as I say, it is a model that improves every detail you add and, once the fuselage and wings are assembled, it is really beautiful.
Although it is rather old (this edition was released in 1992), the kit is in no way inferior to more recent ones, either in detail or in fitting of parts which is almost perfect, especially in those difficult areas of fuselage and wings. A bit of sanding will be necessary in the nose fitting and the engine fan, which should be placed in the interior of the nose, and that’s all. He who wishes getting into trouble (as I did) can use a scribber, but that is not essential because the panel lines are clearly marked and I think they would be visible after painting them. You can also replace the guns by needles and they will look great. Even when you make a mistake, as it happened to me, the model can gain. The worst thing is perhaps the lack of cockpit details. The decal of the instrument panel is OK, but the rest of parts are just normal.
The decals have a good quality, although mine are a bit yellowish. Hasegawa has included two versions of the Raiden in the instructions. One, widely known, which was flown by Lt. Aoki belonging to 352nd Naval Kokutai in 1945 and another one belonging to 302nd Naval Kokutai. The difference between both versions is just the shape of propellers, but the kit includes both types as an option and a drop fuel tank (as it can be seen in some pics), that I discarded. The color scheme is the usual IJN green and IJN grey.
The modeler used to this scale will probably be attracted by the size of this model. Compared to other fighters of its time, the Raiden was smaller and lighter, and Hasegawa has achieved to bring us this impression. Maybe this is the delight of the kit once assembled. The Hasegawa Raiden is a highly recommendable kit which many, regardless their experience, will enjoy.◊
