VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Bien. Los extras en resina, calcas y mascarillas compensan el precio y algunos errores. Recomendada para modelistas con experiencia.

MPM reeditó esta maqueta hace algún tiempo dentro de su estrategia comercial de relanzar sus viejos moldes con mejoras, y convertirlos en maquetas multimedia. En concreto, este Ki-21 añade 26 piezas en resina, doble hoja de calcas y un juego de mascarillas de Eduard a las tres grapas de piezas de plástico anteriores. Aunque las instrucciones no lo indican por ninguna parte, esta versión del Sally es la IIa con «invernadero» dorsal y góndolas más cortas y redondeadas. Hay una segunda maqueta del Modelo IIb [ver revisión] con torreta dorsal que tiene el mismo molde, pues esta que comento trae la torreta y una pieza de plástico para cerrar el hueco dorsal.
El modelo se compone de 74 piezas, incluyendo los transparentes y las piezas de resina mencionadas, que corresponden al interior de la carlinga y al armamento. Del juego de piezas transparentes habrá que eliminar la torreta dorsal si no se desea hacer el Modelo IIb, para el cual no hay referencia de pintura en las instrucciones. Las piezas de plástico están bien moldeadas, no presentan rebabas aunque habrá que lijar las numerosas marcas del eyector que traen en su cara interna el fuselaje, las alas y especialmente los estabilizadores de cola para lograr un buen encaje. Los paneles están muy bien grabados y creo que reproducen fielmente los del referente real. El plástico se deja trabajar bien con la lija (he hecho comprobaciones) y el encaje no aparenta especiales dificultades, aunque con una maqueta de este tipo no sería raro tener que enmasillar en algunos puntos. Las uniones de alas y estabilizadores con el fuselaje necesitan mayor solidez, las alas en concreto simplemente son huecas y encajan en una protuberancia a cada lado del fuselaje. Quizás convenga darles otra solución, pero sin dañar el interior, que se dejará ver a través del acristalamiento dorsal.
Por su parte las piezas de resina no tienen excesivas rebabas y están muy bien conseguidas. El interior de la carlinga viene realizado en una sola pieza con todos los instrumentos del lado derecho, pero también hay piezas sueltas para los del lado izquierdo. Hay un asiento extra opcional en dicha carlinga que supongo podría ser para la versión de entrenamiento de la Escuela de Vuelo de Hamamatsu o simplemente para un tripulante más en funciones de ametrallador. Se incluyen además dos excelentes motores, las ametralladoras, incluida la de cola manejada por control remoto (aunque la dorsal es incorrecta), palancas de mando, el panel de instrumentos, los tubos de escape y el tanque de combustible auxiliar bajo la cubierta dorsal acristalada. Los asientos llevan todos grabados sus respectivos cinturones.
Las piezas transparentes, de plástico inyectado y no vacuformes en esta maqueta, son aceptables. La inclusión de las mascarillas para los transparentes ha sido un acierto, pues van a evitar la tediosa tarea de enmascarar la multitud de ventanas del avión. Hay además dos hojas de calcas, como he dicho, una más pequeña de Propagteam que tiene toda la pinta de haber sido la original de este Ki-21, y una segunda más grande, y probablemente añadida en esta reedición, con las marcas de hasta 9 Sentais diferentes. Todas las calcas presentan buena impresión y colores.
Las instrucciones, bastante fáciles de seguir, consisten en un folleto de 12 páginas con el habitual resumen histórico. Las opciones de pintura representan hasta 11 unidades diferentes, que básicamente llevaban tres esquemas básicos: verde oscuro sobre gris verdoso, completamente de gris verdoso, o una variante de éste con las superficies superiores moteadas en verde oscuro.
En resumen, creo que este Ki-21 de MPM es muy recomendable para modelistas con cierta experiencia, no tanto para principiantes. Creo que en conjunto es una maqueta que ofrece al menos tanto como el precio (caro) que se paga por ella.◊
MPM revised this kit some time ago in their commercial policy of reboxing old toolings with extra parts and decals in order to make them multimedia models. This Ki-21 adds 26 resin parts, two decal sheets and a set of Eduard masks for the clear parts to the old three grey plastic sprues. You will not find the version of the Sally you are building in the instructions, but it is a IIa model with glazed dorsal ‘greenhouse’ and shorter, rounder engine cowlings. MPM also has a Model IIb [see review]with dorsal turret which must be the same mould because you can also build that version with this kit (a turret and a plastic part to cover the dorsal hole are included).
The kit comprises 76 parts, including the clear and resin parts for the interior cockpit and the machine-guns. You will have to discard the transparent turret if you do not wish to build the model IIb, for which there are not any painting references in the instructions. The plastic parts are quite well moulded, without any flash although there are several ejector pins that must be sanded on the inner side of the fuselage halves, wings and stabilizers. The panel lines are finely engraved and I think they represent the real referent accurately. The plastic is soft enough to sand (I have checked it in some parts) and it seems that fitting will not cause especial troubles, although you will probably have to use putty in some points. The fitting of wings and stabilizers to the fuselage is rather weak, particularly the wings, which are hollow and fit by means of a protuberance on both sides of the fuselage. Maybe they need a different solution to make them stronger, but be careful with the fuselage interior that will be seen through the glazed dorsal canopy.
The resin parts are very thoroughly detailed and have little flash. The interior cockpit comes in just one part including the floor, the cabin door and the instruments on the right side. There are also other resin instruments for the left side too. The cockpit includes an optional seat behind the co-pilot position which I suppose it was for the trainer version of the Hamamatsu Flight School in the instructions or simply perhaps for another gunner. The resin set also includes two excellent engines, the machine-guns (with the remote-controlled one in the tail tip), control sticks, exhausts, instrument panel and the additional fuel tank placed just below the dorsal canopy. All the crew seats have moulded belts on them.
MPM chose injected clear parts instead of the usual vacforms for this kit. The addition of the Eduard paint masks has been a wise decision since you will avoid the tiresome task of masking so many windows all over the model. As I said above there are two decal sheets, the smaller one, printed by Propagtem, seems to be for the older edition of the Ki-21 with only two Sentai markings, and the larger must have been added for the new reboxing. This has unit markings for up to 9 different Sentais. All the decals are finely printed.
The instructions come in a leaflet with the usual historical summary and they are easy to follow. The painting options shown on the last page represent 11 units with three basic colour schemes: dark green over grey green, overall grey green or a variant of this latter with spotted dark green upper surfaces.
To sum up, I think this MPM Ki-21 is a good kit, but not recommendable for beginners since you need some experience with resin and clear parts. Overall it is a model which gives you at least so much as the (expensive) price you pay for it.◊
