VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Notable. De no ser por el interior tan raquítico, una maqueta realmente buena.

Esta es una de las maquetas del Razorback de Hasegawa, en esta ocasión dedicada a uno de los centenares escasos de P-47D que se fabricaron con este tipo de carlinga, pues fue en este modelo cuando se cambió por la de forma de burbuja (bubbletop).
El Pequeño Jefe no es más que una reedición del 2004 con caja más actualizada del mismo modelo. Prueba de ello, son dos elementos característicos de un molde con varias décadas a sus espaldas: incluye la figura del piloto y un rótulo con el nombre y modelo del aparato para colocarlo en la vitrina junto a él. El modelo consta de unas 35 piezas en tres grapas más otra pequeña con las piezas transparentes. A pesar de los años, el acabado del plástico no desmerece del fabricante japonés. En cierta manera es comprensible que Hasegawa siga usando el mismo molde, pues el aspecto a simple vista es magnífico, con líneas incisas y superficies perfectamente lisas. No he comprobado el encaje de las piezas, pero parece que la lija y la masilla no se usarán mucho en esta ocasión.
A mi juicio lo mejor de la maqueta es, tras la completísima hoja de calcas y la calidad del plástico, las formas bastante correctas que presenta respecto al referente real. Hablo, naturalmente, de una forma general, comparando el modelo con algunos perfiles recogidos en diferentes libros como el excelente American Warplanes of WWII. Es una lástima que casi siempre falte algo para redondear una maqueta excelente, en este caso se trata del interior de la carlinga, donde encontramos tan sólo un feo asiento que recuerda a un trono unido a parte del suelo (éste tampoco está entero), el panel de instrumentos con calca, el piloto y el reposacabezas. Una pequeña pieza transparente situada sobre el salpicadero hace las veces de mira de puntería. No hay ni palanca de mando ni los usuales pedales en el suelo presentes en tantas maquetas. Los pozos del tren de aterrizaje, por contra, están más detallados que de costumbre. Las patas del tren, también bastante conseguidas, se detallan cortando las piezas 20 y 21 en tres partes para realizar las compuertas. Por último, bajo las alas pueden colocarse dos bombas M43 de 227 kg o dos depósitos auxiliares que no son los clásicos en forma de lágrima, sino otros más alargados de 409 litros.
La hoja de calcas, como ya he mencionado de pasada, es muy buena. Prácticamente incluye hasta el último estencil y reproduce con gran detalle tanto los dibujos como los colores. Es uno de los puntos fuertes de esta maqueta. De las instrucciones, poco hay que decir a los ya acostumbrados a Hasegawa: claras y sencillas de seguir. Como opciones de pintura tenemos al Pequeño Jefe que perteneció a la 61º Escuadrón del 56º Grupo de Cazas en servicio en el teatro europeo a juzgar por las cruces gamadas que representan 5 victorias, y otro Thunderbolt del 310º Escuadrón del 58º Grupo con morro y cola blancos.
Como conclusión, hay que decir que, pese a las deficiencias en la carlinga, la maqueta es recomendable para el modelista de cualquier nivel y experiencia. A poco que se incluyera un interior mejorado, el molde podría seguir dando juego unos lustros más debido a su calidad.◊
This is one of the Razorbacks in Hasegawa’s catalogue dedicated to one of the few hundreds of P-47D which were produced with this kind of canopy. It changed to the bubbletop shape soon after. The Little Chief is just a 2004 reboxing of the old model. This can be seen in two characteristic details of any tooling with several decades behind it: there is a pilot figure and a plastic sign with the name and type of the aircraft aimed to be shown standing next to the finished model. The kit includes some 35 parts in three light grey plastic sprues. There is another small sprue for the clear parts (canopy and gunsight). In spite of the years the model is really worth the Japanese manufacturer. It is certainly understandable why Hasegawa has used this tooling for so many years: the kit looks wonderful, with engraved lines in wings and fuselage, and perfectly moulded surfaces. I have not checked the fitting of parts, but it seems that sand and putty will have a holiday most of the time.
I think the best thing of this kit is, after the really good decal sheet and the quality of plastic, the accurate shapes with respect to the real Thunderbolt. Of course, this is only my own general impression after comparing the model to some of the pictures and profiles showed in the excellent American Warplanes of WWII. Unfortunately, there is often something missing in a good kit. This time is the interior cockpit which is quite poor, you only have a seat resembling a throne which has been moulded with part of the cockpit floor (yeah, the floor is not complete), a pilot figure, the instrument panel with a decal for it and a tiny headrest. A small clear part represents the gunsight in front of the pilot. There is neither a control stick nor rudder pedals, useless without a floor for them. On the other hand, the wheel wells are more detailed than usual. The landing gear, also quite correctly moulded, is detailed by trimming parts 20 and 21 in three sections to build the well doors. Finally, you have two options for the undercarriage: either two 227 kg M43 bombs or two long 409 litre drop tanks, very different from the common ‘teardrop’ ones.
The decal sheet, as I mentioned above, is quite good. It includes almost to the last stencil and reproduces in good detail both the drawings and the colors. Instructions are clear and simple to follow. The painting choice includes the fighter named Little Chief, which belonged to the 61st Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group in service in the ETO judging from the swastikas that represent 5 victories, and another Thunderbolt of the 310th Squadron of the 58th Group with white nose and tail.
In conclusion, it must be said that despite the deficiencies in the cockpit, the model can be recommended to any modeler. With a more detailed cockpit, this quality kit could still last for a few decades.◊
