VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- No el mejor a la escala, pero es buena opción por su excelente relación calidad-precio. Para modelistas de cualquier nivel.

Componen esta maqueta dos grapas más una tercera con las piezas transparentes, la hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. El plástico es el usual de Italeri: fácil de trabajar, sin rebabas y correctamente moldeado. No presenta marcas de eyector en lugares críticos y los paneles grabados son finos, aunque no excesivamente profundos. El detalle es muy bueno, especialmente en las alas. En el fuselaje falta algún panel de acceso muy evidente en el lado derecho y en las alas las salidas de las ametralladoras están hechas en relieve, pero ambas cosas son sencillas de solucionar. Las dimensiones en principio son correctas para la escala, a diferencia de la maqueta de Tamiya, que a priori parece mejor que esta, pero cuyas dimensiones presentan errores de bulto y además tiene menos opciones.
El interior viene algo escaso. El suelo, que el avión real no tenía, aparece representado por una pieza con huecos rectangulares. El resto del interior lo componen la palanca de control, la mira, el asiento, el mamparo trasero y los soportes del asiento. También está el panel de instrumentos, que tiene formas aproximadamente correctas pero escaso detalle. Los laterales de la carlinga vienen sin detalle alguno. De cualquier forma, algunos de estos elementos pueden servir como punto de partida para añadir las mejoras necesarias.
Además de lo ya mencionado sobre el fuselaje, hay que reseñar que la cola trae el timón aparte y tenemos dos tipos de bujes y hélices (De Havilland y Rotol), pero sus palas no tienen formas correctas. Para las versiones tropicalizadas Italeri ha incluido los dos filtros, Vokes y Aboukir, que aparecen bien representados. En la parte inferior, la entrada de refrigeración del radiador es ligeramente ancha y los pozos, que traen algún detalle, poco profundos. El despiece de las alas es de los que suele dar problemas, ya que los flaps aparecen moldeados junto con la mitad inferior de las mismas. En la mitad superior se han incluido unos decepcionantes cañones Hispano, tan sólo un par de cilindros de forma cónica que sobresalen y este es un detalle importante que el modelista habrá de mejorar. Hay también dos tipos de puntas para las alas, puntiaguda o recortada para operaciones a baja cota. El tren de aterrizaje lleva ruedas estándar y los soportes y compuertas son sencillos pero correctos. Del encaje general he leído cosas dispares. Yo no he hecho comprobaciones, pero al parecer las dos piezas del capó motor, que están separadas del resto del fuselaje, son las más problemáticas a priori. Otra zona que previsiblemente tampoco andará muy bien son las mitades de las alas, como he dicho.
Las piezas transparentes vienen en una bolsa aparte y son finas. Hay dos tipos de retrovisores y de cabinas divididas en tres piezas para poder mostrarlas abiertas. La diferencia principal está sobre todo en el parabrisas. La hoja de calcas es de Cartograf y tiene buen aspecto, apenas un poco de película transparente sobrante y los círculos de las escarapelas británicas ligeramente descentrados, pero es un detalle apenas perceptible. Las instrucciones consisten en un folleto doblado de diez páginas donde encontramos siete pasos de montaje, un breve resumen histórico, diagrama de piezas y la guía de pintura y calcas. Las referencias de color se dan en la gama Model Master y en el código Federal Standard como suele ser habitual en el fabricante italiano. Las tres versiones (dos británicas y una norteamericana) de esta maqueta son realmente atractivas y dan ganas de hacerlas todas. La parte posterior de la caja muestra dos de ellas a color, así como los colores de Model Master que aparecen en las instrucciones.
Sin ser el mejor posible, este Spit de Italeri es una buena opción tanto para el modelista más exigente, como para el menos experimentado. La sencillez de montaje y el precio son alicientes añadidos para tenerla en nuestras vitrinas.◊
This kit consists of two parts sprues plus another clear sprue, the decal sheet and the instructions. The plastic is typical from the manufacturer: easy to work, without any flash and correctly moulded. There are no pin marks in visible spots and the panels are thinly engraved and not too deep. Detail is fairly good, especially on wings. There are some access panels missing on the fuselage right side which is quite evident and the gun ports on the leading edges are raised, but both mistakes can be easily corrected. The kit dimensions seem quite accurate for the scale in contrast with Tamiya’s kit which has serious flaws in this aspect and has less building options for the modeller than Italeri’s.
The interior is overall poor. The floor part, the real Spit had nothing we could call one, shows two square openings. The rest of the lot comprises the control stick, the gunsight, the seat, the bulkhead and the seat holders. There is also an instrument panel with approximately the correct shape but lacking detail. The cockpit sides are simply bare. Anyway, some of these parts can be used as a starting point to add more detail.
Apart from the aforesaid about the fuselage, there is a separate part for the rudder and two types of spinners and propellers (De Havilland and Rotol), but the blades don’t look the part quite well. For the trop versions Italeri has included both types of filters, Vokes and Aboukir, which look correct. On the underside, the water cooler seems too wide and the wheel wells have some detail, but they are too shallow. The wing breakdown is the usual type which needs filling and sanding as control surfaces are moulded on the bottom side. The Hispano cannons have also been molded on the upper part of wings and they are really disappointing, these being just a couple of underscaled sticks. This is an important detail that the modeler has to improve in this kit. There are also the two types of wingtips which were common in Mk Vbs, the shorter one was for the low-level fighters. Wheel struts are simple but correct. I have read different things about the overall fitting of this kit. I have made no tests, but the cowling, which comes in two parts, is probably a candidate for putty and sand together with the wing halves as I said above.
Clear parts come in a plastic bag this time and the sprue includes two types of canopies and rearview mirrors. Each canopy has three parts, that allow you to show the interior. The main difference between them is in the windshield. The decal sheet is made by Cartograf and look fine, there is not much carrier film and the British roundels were printed slightly off centre but this is hardly seen. Instructions are also the usual offer from Italeri, they consist of a folded leaflet showing parts diagram, a brief history of the aircraft, ten assembly steps and the painting guide. Colour reference is given in both Model Master and Federal standard codes. The three options are really attractive (two British and one American) and one feels like building them all. Colour reference is also given on the box with the Model Master paint references which appear in the instructions.
This is not of course the best Mk Vb kit manufacturers could make today but it is indeed a good choice both for experienced and novice modelers. The fact it is an easy build and the price are also two other reasons to have it in our shelves.◊
