La maqueta
La maqueta de Azur es una secuela del nuevo molde de Special Hobby, puesto a la venta en 2013 y del que van un puñado de cajas a estas alturas, incluido, por ejemplo, un Chesapeake Mk. I británico o un Vindicator de alas amarillas de preguerra. A Azur parece que le tocó encargarse de la versión francesa.
Hace un par de décadas hubo otra maqueta de Pavla con versiones norteamericanas y francesas en la misma caja. Aquella maqueta sí tenía una ventaja sobre esta de hoy, y es que se podía mostrar el interior. MPM sacó también por entonces su propia maqueta, de la que hicieron copias con distintas versiones tanto Azur como Special Hobby. Comparada con esta de hoy día, era algo más compleja de hacer y tal vez resultaba menos apropiada para las habilidades de un modelista medio. La moderna no deja de ser un molde de tirada limitada, pero me parece mucho más asequible en ese sentido.
La caja trae tres bastidores de piezas grises, un bastidor transparente, unas cuantas piezas de resina, las calcas y las instrucciones. Encontramos doble opción para las alas. El motivo es que una de ellas es específica para el V-156F, con flaps de picado por ambas caras que el Vindicator de la US Navy no tenía. El avión francés también se distinguía por llevar armamento defensivo diferente y por la ausencia del mecanismo ventral para lanzar bombas, aunque sí podía llevarlas bajo las alas. Todas estas diferencias están bien representadas en la maqueta de Azur. Por este motivo nos van a sobrar una treintena larga de piezas respecto a las versiones norteamericanas que ha sacado Special Hobby.
El plástico es fino y tiene cierta rigidez. Las piezas están bien moldeadas sin apenas rebabas. Marcas positivas hay bastantes. Las que más nos importan están situadas dentro de la carlinga y no son fáciles de quitar.
Carlinga
La estructura interna está bien simulada en fino relieve a los lados del fuselaje. El suelo es común para ambos puestos y muestra cierto detalle en relieve, entre el que destacan los dobles pedales. Hay dos piezas para simular la estructura tubular lateral, que viene moldeada con algunos pequeños instrumentos.
La carlinga del piloto cuenta con un asiento, una palanca, un panel trasero que incluye el reposacabezas y un buen panel de instrumentos. El puesto trasero está detallado con botellas de oxígeno, un asiento, la ametralladora Darne con su caja de munición, ambas de resina, y el afuste. Entre los dos tripulantes hay una pieza para cubrir el hueco dotada de lo que parece un tapón de llenado.
La cabina, no hay duda, tiene un magnífico aspecto. Veamos ahora la maqueta por fuera.
Fuselaje y motor
Las mitades del fuselaje muestran un detalle por encima del común. Con una excelente representación del costillaje interno en la mitad trasera y paneles remachados en la delantera. El gancho de apontaje es de resina, pero hay otro de las mismas hechuras de plástico.
La cubierta transparente es fina y está bien detallada, lástima que no se pueda mostrar el interior por ser de una pieza.
El capó viene separado en mitades y está detallado con una toma de aire lateral y otra situada en la parte inferior del anillo externo, el mástil de la antena y un recortado escape lateral que viene horadado. El motor se compone de dos coronas, la interna unida a un panel para cerrar el hueco del fuselaje. La pieza es bastante buena y viene muy limpia. Lo mismo se puede decir de la hélice, moldeada en una pieza con palas finas y perfiladas.
Alas y empenaje
Las alas están divididas en dos mitades superiores y una inferior. El diedro parece bien conseguido. Las superficies poseen muy buen detalle y un contraste excelente en los paneles remachados y la simulación del costillaje interno y flaps. Los frenos de picado, que vienen simplemente grabados, me parecen mejores en las caras inferiores que en las superiores, donde los veo peor definidos. Las mitades superiores cuentan también con actuadores de los flaps y luces de posición. La luz de aterrizaje es una pequeña pieza transparente. Los pozos aparecen moldeados con profundidad suficiente y están cerrados en su contorno. El tubo pitot debe fabricarlo el modelista.
Los estabilizadores y el timón vertical presentan superficies enteladas muy bien copiadas. Los estabilizadores son de una pieza y llevan aletas para unirlos al fuselaje.
Debajo de las alas se puede colocar diferente armamento, que comprende dos pequeñas bombas de plástico moldeadas con los soportes y aletas separadas, o bien dos bombas mayores con soportes separados, todo de resina.
Tren de aterrizaje
Es sencillo pero está bien detallado. Tanto las patas como los brazos de plegado y las tapas están bien representados. Las ruedas son de una pieza y me parecen excelentes, con bujes y neumáticos bien definidos. La rueda trasera viene moldeada con la carena.
Calcas
La hoja es de Aviprint. Contiene escarapelas francesas con círculo central aparte, marcas para el timón vertical y los estabilizadores, así como matrículas y números para las escuadrillas AB1 y AB3, las dos unidades que formaron la Primera Flotilla de Ataque y participaron en la guerra operando desde tierra. Los motivos poseen buen contraste y finura, y los colores saturación correcta.
Instrucciones
Vienen impresas en color en un folleto grapado de 12 páginas. Contiene una breve historia del avión, un plano numerado de piezas, una lista de colores con pinturas de Gunze Sangyo equivalentes, 14 secuencias de construcción, más tres páginas de perfiles.
Hay dos opciones de pintura. Los aparatos de la escuadrilla AB1 lucen el clásico gris naval en todo el avión, mientras que el de la AB3 lleva un camuflaje por arriba muy parecido al del Armée de l’Air.
Valoración
Esta es una maqueta interesante y bien detallada que mejora mucho a las que hubo anteriormente y, más importante aún, es más asequible para el modelista con no tanta experiencia. También supone una alternativa al Vindicator norteamericano, que suele verse más comúnmente. Se merece una oportunidad.◊
The kit
This is a rebox of the last Special Hobby tool that appeared in 2013 which has had a handful of variants released so far. Among these, for example, there is a British Chesapeake Mk. I or a prewar yellow-winged Vindicator. Azur seems to have been in charge of the French version.
A couple of decades ago we had a kit from Pavla including US and French variants in the same box. That kit did have an advantage over today’s Azur/SH offer because the cockpit could be shown. MPM also released their own kit at that time and both Azur and Special Hobby reboxed different versions. Compared to the one I review here, it was somewhat more complex to build and perhaps less suitable for the average modeler. Still being a short-run kit, the new tool seems much more buildable in that sense.
The box contains three gray sprues, a clear sprue, a few resin parts, the decals and the instructions. We find a double choice for the wings. The reason is that one set is specific to the V-156F, with dive brakes on both sides that the US Navy’s Vindicator did not have. The French aircraft also featured different defensive armament and the lack of the device to drop bombs under the fuselage, although it could carry underwing armament. All of these differences are well represented in Azur kit. For this reason there are about thirty pieces we will not use being applicable to the US variants that Special Hobby released.
Plastic is thin and somewhat stiff. Parts are well molded with hardly any flash. There are positive marks in a few places, but the most relevant are located inside the cockpit and are not easy to remove.
Cockpit
The fuselage sides feature some thin raised lines to convey the internal structure. The floor is common to both stations and also shows some raised detail including the double pedals. There are two pieces to simulate the side tubular structure, which are molded with some small instruments.
The pilot’s cockpit features a seat, a lever, a rear panel including the headrest, and a good instrument panel. The rear station is detailed with oxygen bottles, a seat, the Darne machine-gun with the ammo box, both resin pieces, and the gun mount. Between the two crew stations there is a piece covering the gap provided with what seems a filler cap.
Unquestionably, the cockpit looks fine. Now let’s see the kit from the outside.
Fuselage and engine
The fuselage halves show outstanding detail with an excellent rendering of the internal ribbing on the rear half and riveted panels on the front. The arrester hook is made of resin, but there is an alternative one on the sprues.
The clear canopy is fine and well detailed, but it’s a pity that the cockpit cannot be shown because it is one piece.
The cowling comes split in halves and is detailed with a side intake, an oil cooler intake on the outer ring, the antenna mast, and an exhaust. The engine is made up of two rows, the internal one attached to a panel to close the gap in the fuselage. The piece is quite good and comes very clean. The same can be said for the propeller, molded in one piece with thin, profiled blades.
Wings and empennage
The wings are divided into two upper and one lower halves. The dihedral seems well done. Surfaces have very good detail and excellent contrast in the riveted panels and the simulation of the internal ribs and flaps. The dive brakes, which are simply engraved, seem better on the lower sides than on the upper ones, being less defined here. The upper halves also feature flap actuators and position lights. The landing light is a small clear piece. The wells have a realistic depth and contours are molded closed. The pitot tube is not included and the modeller must build one.
Stabilizers and the vertical rudder show nicely rendered tapered surfaces. Stabilizers are one piece and are molded with tabs for fuselage attachment.
Different weapons can be placed under the wings, these being two small plastic bombs with separate racks and fins, or two larger resin one-piece bombs with separate racks.
Undercarriage
It is simple but well detailed. The legs, folding arms and covers are finely molded. The wheels are one piece and look excellent with defined hubs and tires. The tail wheel is molded with the fairing.
Decals
The sheet is made by Aviprint. It contains French cockades with a separate central circle, markings for the vertical rudder and stabilizers, as well as codes for the AB1 and AB3 squadrons, the two units grouped in the First Attack Flotilla that took part in WWII operating from land bases. Decals are thin with good contrast and colors show correct saturation.
Instructions
They are printed in color on a 12-page stapled booklet. It contains a brief history of the aircraft, a numbered parts plan, a color list with equivalent Gunze Sangyo paints, 14 construction sequences plus three profile pages.
There are two paint options. The aircraft of the AB1 squadron wear the classic overall navy gray, while that of the AB3 sports a camouflage on top that looks very similar to that used by the Armée de l’Air.
Conclusion
This is an interesting and well-detailed kit that is much better than those released years ago and, more importantly, looks more suitable for the average modeller. It is also an alternative to the more commonly seen US Vindicator. I think it well deserves a chance.◊
