Review
Das Werk has timed the release of its recent 1/35 scale Kurierwagen Type 181 to coincide with the launch of these figures, though they are not their first plastic figures produced in this scale. While dozens of Bundeswehr soldiers already exist, it is a clever move to find a niche with this set, which features two pairs of figures from different eras.
The kit comes in a rigid cardboard box with an outer sleeve, reminiscent of ICM’s style, containing a single sprue and an instruction sheet. Parts are very well molded and free from blemishes, save for some minimal seam lines on the arms and legs that will be easy to clean up.
The figures depict two drivers and their passen gers in quite natural poses, with a deliberate effort to make them look distinct from one another . Even the drivers, for whom achieving such variety is more challenging, are shown gripping the steering wheel in slightly different ways. The specific details of their uniforms are most apparent in their headgear (peaked caps, side caps, helmets, and berets). It is also interesting, even from a sociological perspective, that the passengers’ poses reflect their respective historical contexts, separated by 40 years: the soldier from the 1980s is smoking, a habit now fiercely targeted by the «new Inquisition» of modern-day sensibilities, while his contemporary counterpart is completely absorbed in his mobile phone.
Parts breakdown is similar in all the figures. Each on e consists of a torso, arms, legs, a head, and hips molded with the legs and split down the middle. Das Werk have thoughtfully included several alternative heads, with and without headgear, which not only expands the option s for the modeler but it is also a great addition to the box of spares for future projects. The only thing I miss in this release is that the manufacturer didn’t include any personal gear or accessories, which are no less important, even though the figures are intended to be placed inside a vehicle.
The figures representing the 2020s consist of nineteen parts each. They wear uniforms comprising a tunic, trousers, and boots. The details, such as pockets, buttons, and lapels, are quite sharp, though the belt is slightly less defined. A national flag is also visible, molded onto the right shoulder. The folds in the fabric are well-executed and realistic. The hands are clearly defined; one hand, which holds a mobile device, is provided as a separate piece. For the heads, there is a choice between a full, hairless head, which can be fitted with a helmet featuring a textured camouflage cover, or another cut at the forehead, designed to wear a peaked cap that also shows fabric texture. The faces feature crisp details and generally serious, yet distinct, expressions.
The figures representing the 1980s are broken down into seven parts each. They wear the same type of uniform, with similar external features and detail; as mentioned earlier, there is little noticeable difference between the jackets from the 1980s and those from the present day. In this set, the heads come with either a garrison cap or a beret, which are molded with the heads. The facial features and expressions are well-defined. The uniform textures and the detail on the hands are equally nice.
The instruction sheet is printed in color and includes an unnumbered parts diagram, a color chart with paint matches from Vallejo Atom, Mr. Hobby, Tamiya, AK 3rd Gen, and ICM, and an assembly and painting guide. The latter includes a sample for the modern camouflage pattern, which is quite complex to replicate, for the uniforms and helmets, as well as the specific colors needed to paint the small national flag on the right shoulder.
Conclusion
These figures are a great addition to any of the post-war or modern German military vehicle kits that manufacturers are releasing in increasing numbers. As the title suggests, this set is a true «2-in-1» package worth considering not just for its contents, but also for the creative possibilities it offers the modeler, all at a very reasonable price.◊
