LO MEJOR – THE BEST:

VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:

Maqueta nada prometedora a menos que se refinen piezas y se incorporen detalles. Necesita trabajo extra.

Esta es una de esas maquetas a las que yo llamo crudas. Aún hoy sigue siendo la única posibilidad de hacer este interesante carro soviético, origen del BT-5 y los modelos siguientes del BT-7. El contenido de la caja es variopinto, ya que encontramos tres bastidores que provienen del BT-5 de Zvezda (llevan incluso grabado el logotipo y el año de fabricación, 1992) de color verde oliva, otros dos idénticos en gris oscuro propios de Maquette y otro negro para las cadenas. Los bastidores de Zvezda, sólo dos de ellos identificados como B y C, proporcionan básicamente el casco y los de Maquette las ruedas, la torre y el armamento (estos dos últimos vienen repetidos).

El plástico es bastante grueso y duro, quizá algo menos en las piezas de Zvezda, con muchos restos de eyector que se puede eliminar fácilmente y marcas sobre todo en la parte interna del casco que no serán visibles. Las piezas apenas muestran rebabas. La mayor parte de las piezas tienen un grosor excesivo y deben ser refinadas. Esto no augura un montaje fácil y algunas deberán ser irremediablemente reemplazadas, como la rejilla de ventilación del motor o las entradas de aire. En algún caso podrían usarse fotograbados para el BT-5 o BT-7 inicial, ya que estos modelos comparten básicamente el mismo chasis del BT-2.

El interior es casi inexistente, sólo tenemos el asiento del conductor ya que, de todas las aberturas practicables, la única que puede mostrarse abierta es la escotilla del conductor, no así la del comandante en la torre. La famosa suspensión Christie está representada de forma básica al igual que las ruedas. De éstas, las que debemos usar son las perforadas de los bastidores de Maquette y no las cerradas que vienen en los de Zvezda, que corresponden al BT-5 y son por tanto posteriores. Las instrucciones no son muy claras al respecto y hay que fijarse bien en el diagrama de montaje de las cadenas. El despiece del casco es algo complicado y hay que alinear bien las piezas laterales y trasera con la base para no tener sorpresas al montar la superestructura. Algunos diagramas de montaje, como digo, no son excesivamente claros y debe estudiarse bien el montaje de los mecanismos de las ruedas tractoras y de retorno. La torre muestra buena factura, con perfil correcto y remaches a escala, lástima que la escotilla no venga separada, pero puede abrirse sin excesiva dificultad porque el contorno de la pieza está bien grabado. Hay varias opciones para el armamento. El cañón B-3 podría valernos ya que viene de una pieza y tiene perfil correcto. Desgraciadamente, no puede sustituirse por el del BT-5 ya que éste portaba un cañón distinto. Las ametralladoras DT son inservibles, aunque también cabría montar el carro sin la ametralladora lateral, ya que las primeras 60 unidades que se fabricaron no la llevaban, si bien la configuración más común fue mixta cañón-ametralladora.

Otros detalles que conviene rectificar son los faros, los soportes de los guardabarros y la rejilla de ventilación del motor. Curiosamente el tubo de escape aparece ya texturizado. Las cadenas, que son de tipo mixto de eslabones y tramos, tienen un detalle más que aceptable, pero convendría sustituirlas por otras del BT-5 o BT-7 si no queremos representar el carro en marcha porque no tendrán caída alguna. Aquí también se podría prescindir de ellas simplemente y montar la maqueta sólo con las ruedas.

Las instrucciones aparecen en una simple hoja de buen tamaño doblada. Conviene estudiar bien alguno de los pasos y hacer encajes en seco antes de proceder con los siguientes. De las cuatro opciones de pintura la más atractiva es la que muestra la versión armada de cañón, con un camuflaje disruptivo de bandas azuladas sobre camuflaje blanco invernal, típico de algunas unidades que tomaron parte en la defensa de Moscú a fines de 1941. Por los perfiles que he visto, parece que estas bandas iban además reticuladas en color blanco, cosa que no se muestra en las instrucciones. La hoja de calcas de Prodecal es mínima, sólo trae una banda de identificación para la torre, un numeral y tres estrellitas para dos de las versiones.

Por lo dicho hasta aquí, está claro que esta maqueta no es un proyecto a corto plazo ni cosa de montar y pintar, pero mientras que otras marcas no se acuerden de ella es la única opción que puede servir como base para tener un BT-2 en nuestra colección.◊

This kit is what I call hard stuff. Today it is still the only available option to build this interesting Soviet tank, origin of the BT-5 and the following BT-7 models. The content of the box is colourful, there are three sprues which come from Zvezda’s BT-5 (they even show the brand logo and year of production, 1992) in olive green plastic, two other identical dark grey sprues come from Maquette and lastly there is another black sprue for the tracks. Zvezda’s sprues, only two of them are identified as B and C, basically contain the hull parts and those from Maquette comprise the wheels, turret and armament (these last two have double parts).

Plastic is rather hard and thick, a bit less in Zvezda’s sprues, showing a handful of ejector pins which are not a trouble and marks above all on the internal sides of the hull which won’t be visible, but parts are mostly clean from flash. Most parts are thick and needs refining. This is not a good perspective for a quick build, and some will have to be discarded and replaced by plastic, such as the engine grill or the air intakes. In some cases, you could use PE parts from sets for the BT-5 or early BT-7 as these models shared most of their chassis with the BT-2.

The interior is almost empty except for the driver’s seat. This is sensible as the only hatch that can be showed open is the driver’s, but the levers and steering wheel (this is an American design) are not included. The famous Christie suspension is basically represented as well as the wheels. The wheels to be used are the perforated ones in the grey sprues and not Zvezda’s green ones as they correspond to a BT-5 and are therefore a later model. The instructions are not very clear about it and the tracks assembly diagram should be checked for this. Hull parts breakup is a bit difficult and good alignment of side and rear parts is crucial to assemble the superstructure correctly. As I say, some diagrams in the instructions are not very helpful and a thorough study dry fitting parts is advisable in the case of the mechanism of both idlers and sprockets. The turret has a realistic look with correct profile and raised bolts which seem the correct size for the scale. It’s a shame the commander’s hatch is not a separate part, but it won’t be difficult to open as the profile is well engraved on the turret. There some options for the armament. The B-3 gun could be used since it’s molded as one part and shows an acceptable shape. Unfortunately, it can’t be replaced by that of the BT-5 as this carried a different gun model. DT machine-guns are not usable, although there is the possibility to build the tank without the ball mount since the first 60 units produced didn’t have this machine gun. It is also true that the most popular configuration was gun and DT machine-gun.

Other parts to be refined or replaced are the mudguard holders and the engine grill. The part corresponding to the exhausts shows rust texture, which is an advantage. Tracks are the mixed type, length and links, detail is quite acceptable, but it would be advisable to replace them unless you want to show your model on the run because sagging them will be impossible. Alternatively you can build your model with wheels only.

Instructions appear in a large folded sheet and care should be taken with the mentioned vague diagrams. The most attractive paint version is the one showing a whitewashed winter tank with disruptive blue bands. This was used by some Sovier units during the defence of Moscow in late 1941. According to some profiles I’ve seen, these blue bands were also overpainted with reticulated white lines, a detail which is not in the instructions. The small decal sheet is by Prodecal and contains a red and white stripe for the turret, a unit number and three tiny red stars for two of the versions.

It’s clear this kit is not a short-term project or easy to build and detail, but until other brands take it into account this is the only choice if you want a BT-2 in your shelves.◊
