Trumpeter editó en 2002 dos maquetas del jeep chino BJ212. Una es la que reviso aquí (Trumpeter 02302) y la otra, con la que comparte molde, es la versión que porta un cañón sin retroceso de 105 mm. (Trumpeter 02301). Actualmente estas dos maquetas han sido reemplazadas en el catálogo del fabricante por otra del mismo vehículo con el complemento de un lanzacohetes Tipo 63 de 107 mm. (Trumpeter 02320). La única diferencia de la nueva con las dos primeras es el color del plástico y la adición de fotograbados y tubos metálicos para el lanzacohetes.
La maqueta del vehículo está compuesta de seis bastidores (uno de ellos contiene las piezas transparentes), el chasis moldeado en una sola pieza embolsado aparte, cuatro ruedas de goma también sueltas y en bolsa separada y un eje de metal para el tren trasero. Las piezas presentan buen aspecto sin rebabas y sólo ligeras líneas de moldeado fáciles de eliminar. Hay multitud de marcas de eyector en las caras internas o bajas de las piezas de mayor tamaño, más evidentes y trabajosas de eliminar en la parte inferior del chasis, cara interna del toldo, interior de las puertas, capó y compuerta trasera. Las piezas menores, singularmente las que corresponden al tren de rodaje y motor, están libres de esta plaga. Indudablemente la intención del fabricante era que no se viesen marcas una vez terminada la maqueta con el toldo incorporado, y bien es cierto que lo consiguió. El encaje en todas las zonas es de bueno a perfecto, de modo que no se pierde tiempo en rectificar ajustes ni enmasillar.
El montaje se inicia por el motor, la transmisión, los ejes y ruedas delanteros y traseros. El motor es muy básico pero suficiente si no se deja el capó abierto. El único problema de montaje del la zona mecánica del vehículo es el eje delantero. Trumpeter incluye una varilla metálica para el trasero que le da rigidez y estabilidad. Sin embargo, en el delantero el eje es de plástico y además viene partido en dos tramos que conectan con el diferencial. El motivo es que los extremos de ambos tramos van metidos en los cubos de las ruedas para permitir el giro y lo fácil era realizarlos en dicho material. Tras montar el tren delantero, se comprueba que este es frágil, muy delicado y con tendencia a curvarse ligeramente hacia abajo ya montado. La solución más práctica quizá sea sustituir este eje por una sola varilla metálica o plástica, para lo que habría que horadar completamente la pieza del diferencial y fijar definitivamente los cubos de las ruedas en posición girada o no.
Otro punto negativo en esta zona son las bridas de las ballestas que resultan inservibles por demasiado finas y quebradizas. Yo al menos no he podido sacar ninguna entera del bastidor aún cortándola con sierra de fotograbado muy fina. Las tensiones del corte las fragmenta irremisiblemente. Otras piezas que hay que alinear con cuidado son los amortiguadores, barra estabilizadora frontal y el tubo de escape, aunque también es cierto que las instrucciones resultan de mucha ayuda.
Los neumáticos, como ya he mencionado, vienen por separado. Presentan muy buen aspecto, incluso en el dibujo de las bandas de rodadura, sin líneas de molde ni defectos aparentes. Es una pena que ya no dispongamos de las ruedas de resina que fabricaba Trakz para este jeep, así que por el momento es lo que tenemos. El ajuste en los cubos es tan bueno que resulta difícil sacarlos, por ello es aconsejable montar al menos los delanteros antes de pegar los cubos a los ejes.
El chasis viene de una pieza sin rastro de marcas de eyector por la parte externa y multitud de ellas en la zona inferior que, obviamente serán invisibles al pintar. El ajuste del capó y la compuerta trasera es bueno y tampoco presentan marcas en el exterior. En el interior tenemos el panel de indicadores (bastante fiel al real), varias palancas, volante, pedales (acelerador algo chusco), asientos y depósitos de combustible bajo los asientos delanteros. En los delanteros se ha de tener cuidado al manipular la pieza C34 correspondiente a los respaldos y los soportes al ser muy frágil. Las puertas vienen en piezas separadas y necesitan el relleno de las marcas de sus caras internas, como queda dicho. Salvo por esto último, el montaje del interior es bastante fácil y rápido.
El toldo también viene de una sola pieza, desgraciadamente bien provisto de marcas en su cara interna. La cara externa imita muy bien tanto la textura del material impermeable, como la tensión del tejido extendido de modo que podemos usarlo sin reparos.
Las piezas transparentes son claras y no presentan desperfectos ni distorsiones graves. Los faros están bien detallados e incluyen el rayado vertical de los reales. Las ventanillas van pegadas a los marcos de protección entoldados que son piezas separadas. Si es necesario, tanto la ventanilla trasera como las laterales, una vez añadidas a sus marcos, pueden colocarse desde fuera tras pegar el toldo.
La única versión de esta maqueta representa un vehículo monocolor del ejército chino sin marcas ni matrículas, por ello no hay hoja de calcas. La referencia para el color verde de Gunze acrílico (H78 Olive Drab) no me parece correcta considerando el tono de este jeep y otros vehículos de ruedas chinos coetáneos que pueden verse en las no muy abundantes fotos a color de finales del siglo pasado.
Pese a que ya lleva unos años en danza, creo que tanto las versiones del BJ212 antiguas de Trumpeter como la más reciente, con las que comparte molde, son fáciles de montar y no tienen errores graves o insalvables para modelistas de cualquier nivel de experiencia.◊
Way back in 2002 Trumpeter released two kits of the Chinese jeep BJ212. The basic kit is the one reviewed here (Trumpeter 02302) and the other, coming obviously from the same tooling, is the version carrying a 105mm recoiless gun (Trumpeter 02301). Today these kits are no longer in Trumpeter’s catalogue, replaced by the BJ212 towing a Type 63 107mm rocket launcher. Apart from the colour of plastic (from green to grey), the only difference with the older kits is the addition of a PE fret and brass tubes for the launcher.
The kit comprises six sprues (one of them containing the clear parts), the chassis moulded as one part, four rubber tyres also molded separately and a metal rod for the rear axle. Parts are cleanly molded, without any flash and very thin seam which can be easily cleaned. There are plenty of ejector marks on the interior sides of the biggest parts, more evident and tiresome to fill under the chassis, canvas and doors. Smaller parts, however, are free from this plague. Obviously, Trumpeter didn’t want the marks to be seen from the outside and they really did a good job. Fitting of parts ranges from good to excellent thus avoiding time-consuming tasks such as correcting mistakes or filling joins with putty.
Assembly starts with the engine and transmission. The engine is quite basic but seems just enough if the hood is not showed open. The only serious issue is the front axle. Trumpeter included two plastic rods to be inserted into the differential and each of the wheel hubs. The reason for this is that hubs are movable and this is more difficult to get with a metal rod as the one to be used in the rear axle. Once the front axle is built, it becomes brittle and the rods tend to bend downwards. Perhaps the most practical solution is to drill a complete hole through the differential and use a single plastic or metal rod to replace the axle with the hubs being also set and fixed in the desired position.
Another lesser issue here are the U-bolts in the leaf springs. Too thin and brittle, they are almost impossible to be taken out from the sprue without breaking the parts. I couldn’t even get one right although I used a very thin PE mini-saw. Careful alignment is also necessary for the exhaust, springs and stabilizer bar, but here the instructions are a great help.
As mentioned, tyres come moulded as separate parts. They look fine, with good detail of the tread pattern and no flash or other flaws. It is a pity Trakz replacement resin wheels for this jeep are not on sale any more and for the time being these are the only ones at hand. The fitting of tyres round the hubs are so good that they are difficult to take out, for this it is advisable to insert at least the front tyres before gluing hubs and axles.
The chassis, as sid before, also comes in one part, without flash or marks present on the upper surface but lots of them on the lower side but they won’t be visible after assembly. The hood and the rear door fit perfectly on the chassis, also without marks on their top sides. In the interior the kit includes three levers, the steering wheel, a front instrument panel (quite similar to its real counterpart), pedals, seats and two fuel tanks. Care is needed when handling and painting part C34 which corresponds to the front seats as the frame is again quite delicate. Doors are separate parts and need some filling of ejector marks on the inside, especially if you are not going to add the canvas. Except for this, building the interior is quite easy and strightforward.
The canvas is also unfortunately plagued with marks on the interior side. However, the outer side looks fine, with a good representation of both the texture and tension of the fabric, so I think you can definitely use it.
Clear parts are transparent and free from distortion. Headlights are well detailed with grooved lenses as in the real referent. Side windows are inserted into separate frames, which also have the same convincing texture of the canvas top. If desired, all the windows can be glued in position even if the canvas has already been glued but not the windshield.
The only version in the kit shows an overall green vehicle from the Chinese army without any plates or markings, for this reason decals are not included. I don’t think the acrylic colour reference in the instructions, Gunze H78 Olive Drab, is the correct one considering the few colour pictures of this and other Chinese wheeled vehicles between the 1960s and 1990s that can be found on the Internet and elsewhere.
This must have been a very good kit for its time and still today, after having been around for the last decades, it is also worth a try if you like softskins. I’m sure any version you choose, including the more recent with the launcher, will please you. Leaving aside the issue with the front axle (feasible to be rectified) the kit is easy to build and quite simple to paint.◊
