VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Un ejemplar único que Trumpeter retrató bastante bien por fuera. Buen detalle general, sencilla de montar y apta para menos duchos. Poco más puede pedirse.

La maqueta
Trumpeter debe llevar a estas alturas lo menos 15 años editando maquetas del carro pesado KV-1 en sus diferentes modelos, variantes, desarrollos y derivados de todo pelaje. Si no están todos ellos, pocos deben faltar. Esta maqueta en concreto comparte casi todas sus piezas con el KV-1 Modelo 1942 con torre de fundición, salvo algunos bastidores específicos para sustituir el armamento y la cúpula del comandante.
La caja contiene 352 piezas repartidas en nueve bastidores, el casco y la torre separados, un trozo de hilo de cobre trenzado, un bastidor con 18 rodamientos de plástico traslúcido, un juego de cadenas de vinilo, un pequeño bastidor transparente, las calcas y las instrucciones.
El plástico está correctamente moldeado y las piezas bien detalladas en general, destacando especialmente las finas líneas de soldadura en el casco, así como la nitidez de las cabezas de tuercas y remaches en ciertas zonas y piezas. Trumpeter no ha replicado, sin embargo, la textura irregular de la fundición en la torre. Igualmente en el debe podemos señalar la presencia de marcas visibles en la cara interna de las tapas de la escotilla del comandante, en el freno de boca del cañón y en la cara interna de las cadenas de plástico. Estas marcas no son importantes, pues será sencillo eliminarlas, pero las de las cadenas son muchas y resultará tedioso hacerlo.
El número de piezas no es más crecido debido a la ausencia de interior y el montaje no parece difícil. Como en cualquier maqueta, hay piezas mejorables como las cadenas o el cañón, pero en mi opinión no es imprescindible reemplazarlos.
La maqueta representa un KV-1 modificado por los alemanes. Este modelo único y probado en el frente de batalla recibió la designación de Pz.Kpfw. KV-1 756(r). El carro recibió el cañón y la cúpula del comandante de un Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G inicial. Los alemanes también le añadieron el extractor de humos del carro T-34 en la torre y contenedores adicionales de combustible.
Casco y tren de rodaje
El casco viene preformado en una pieza que sólo carece del lado trasero. Hay dos lados adicionales superpuestos a los laterales del casco que muestran huecos para situar diferentes piezas del tren de rodaje.
La plancha frontal del casco está detallada con dos bases para añadir dos enganches, unidos a ellas a presión, donde podremos situar los cables de remolque. Hay otra plancha de refuerzo sobre el frontal y también tenemos el refuerzo delantero separado en el borde del casco. En la parte trasera hay un par de piezas que simulan las rejillas de ventilación del motor. Aunque muestran buen detalle, quedarán más reales si se las sustituye por otras de fotograbado. También tenemos la luz trasera en una pieza transparente y dos enganches unidos a presión como los delanteros.
Cada lado el tren de rodaje consta de una rueda tensora, una tractora, seis ruedas de carretera y tres rodillos de retorno. Antes de montar la suspensión hay que colocar los topes de los brazos. El eje de la rueda tensora va unido a la cubierta del engranaje de la transmisión y muestra muy buen detalle en la corona de tuercas alrededor de ella. También los ejes de los rodillos tienen parecidas hechuras. Los brazos de la suspensión son de una pieza salvo la tapa frontal del eje separada y detallada con las tres tuercas preceptivas. Los brazos muestran líneas de molde muy finas que no presentan problemas para eliminarlas. Por otro lado, el eje de la rueda tensora se compone de dos mitades con una pieza en medio que representa el sistema tensor de la cadena.
La rueda tractora consta de dos coronas separadas con dientes bien definidos. El buje externo viene en dos discos superpuestos con una corona de remaches bien reproducida. La rueda tensora también está formada por dos piezas que muestran buen detalle en los huecos y los radios son finos y perfilados.
Las ruedas de carretera son dobles con un rodamiento de plástico entre ellas. El detalle externo es fino y nítido en los radios y la cubierta del eje. Los rodillos de retorno son igualmente dobles, pero la tapa del eje está separada. Finalmente, el sistema de bloqueo de la rueda tractora está moldeado en una pieza y situado por delante de la misma.
Cadenas
Trumpeter ofrece dos opciones. Las cadenas de vinilo están fabricadas en dos tramos y tienen muy buen detalle por ambos lados para ser de dicho material. Las de plástico son de tramos y eslabones sueltos. El tramo superior está moldeado simulando la caída entre los rodillos de retorno. El detalle es también bastante bueno en ambas caras y el único inconveniente son las numerosas marcas de eyector en la lado interno que deben eliminarse, como mencionaba antes.
Superestructura
El lado superior del casco viene en dos piezas; una de ella es la cubierta del motor y la otra abarca desde el frontal del vehículo hasta el anillo de la torre.
El frontal tiene una plancha de blindaje añadida en la que hay que instalar varias piezas como el faro, provisto de lente transparente e incluso la bombilla, el visor frontal, la mira del conductor y la ametralladora. El arma cuenta con un afuste separado y remachado, y el cañón aparte sin horadar.
La zona superior frontal cuenta con el deflector de disparos y la escotilla con su anillo y tapa. La tapa viene muy bien detallada en el interior. No solo cuenta con el sistema de cierre completo, sino que también posee una bisagra separada que permite mostrarla abierta.
La cubierta del motor está bien detallada y tanto las rejillas de ventilación del motor como las escotillas de acceso son piezas separadas. Las rejillas de ventilación son muy buenas pero vienen cegadas por el plástico, pero tendrán aspecto más real si se cambian por fotograbados. Las tapas de los accesos son parecidos a los de la escotilla del conductor con bisagras separadas. La parte central de la cubierta viene en una pieza, al igual que los tubos de escape que son finos y tienen salidas abiertas. Hay también varios enganches diminutos y delicados de manipular. El anillo de la torre está moldeado en una pieza y tiene algunas marcas de eyector invisibles al colocar la torre.
Los guardabarros están moldeados de una pieza y llevan la barra de soporte en el lado inferior. Poseen buen detalle en los refuerzos remachados en el lado superior. El lado inferior tiene varias marcas, pero de nuevo no serán evidentes al montar las cadenas. Los soportes de los guardabarros están separados. Aunque las instrucciones señalan que deben usarse los huecos, la maqueta incluye otros sin hueco opcionales. Sobre los guardabarros hay una caja de respeto en el lado derecho, cadenas de repuesto y una cesta para alojar los contenedores de combustible a la izquierda. Los contenedores están despiezados en mitades con asas y tapones aparte.
Los cables de arrastre están formados por hilo de cobre trenzado y tienen ojales de plástico que están horadados para introducir el cable.
Torre
La base de la torre es una pieza separada del resto. Además de la ametralladora trasera, idéntica a la del casco, la parte superior cuenta con una escotilla igual a la del conductor, con tapa separada bien detallada por dentro, varios periscopios, la cubierta del extractor de humos del T-34, que tiene su propio hueco en la torre y no está simplemente pegada sobre ella, y un par de asas.
La cúpula alemana viene en mitades con los visores internos y las tapas por separado. Como mencioné antes, las tapas poseen leves marcas en el lado interno.
La maqueta incluye el cañón del KV-1 soviético y su mantelete. El cañón alemán está bien representado en varias piezas e incluye la ametralladora coaxial aparte. El tubo está moldeado en una pieza con el freno de boca. El freno tiene la parte frontal separada para mejorar su detalle. La parte exterior del freno muestra algunas líneas de molde que deben eliminarse con cuidado, así como la marca de eyector ya aludida.
Calcas
La pequeña hoja de calcas solo tiene dos juegos de cruces gamadas blancas y negras que parecen finas y están bien impresas.
Instrucciones
Consisten en un folleto doblado formando 10 páginas que está impreso en blanco y negro. El folleto muestra un plano de piezas numerado y 18 capítulos de montaje. Una hoja separada impresa a color en papel satinado muestra perfiles y referencias de color de Gunze Sangyo. Las vistas explosionadas son muy claras.
Valoración
Resulta verdaderamente raro ver un KV-1 “vestido” de alemán y llevando armamento que parece no venirle bien. Esta es sin duda una variante muy singular del conocido carro ruso para los que deseen hacer algo bastante diferente de lo habitual. Si bien carece de interior, Trumpeter hizo un buen ejercicio de detalle por fuera y la maqueta en algunos aspectos no tiene nada que envidiarle a las de otros fabricantes más reverenciados. Como señalé arriba, no parece difícil de montar ni siquiera para los que tengan habilidades básicas. Además, tampoco requiere necesariamente reemplazar piezas como las cadenas o el cañón, lo cual es otro aliciente para quienes pretendan hacerla de caja. También para quienes tienen más experiencia puede ser una muy buena base para añadir más recambios, como las rejillas del motor, si desean hacerlo.
Al ser una mezcla desigual de dos carros muy distintos como el KV-1 y el Pz.Kpfw. IV, esta maqueta puede ser una buena piedra de toque para los aficionados tanto a los blindados soviéticos como a los alemanes.◊
The kit
Trumpeter must have been releasing kits of the KV-1 heavy tank in its different models, variants, developments and derivatives of all kinds for at least 15 years. Few, if any, must be missing. This particular kit shares most parts with Trumpeter’s KV-1 Model 1942 with heavy cast turret kit, except for some specific sprues to replace the armament and the commander’s cupola.
The box contains 352 pieces in nine sprues, a separate hull and tower, a length of twisted copper wire, a sprue with 18 translucent poly-caps, a set of vinyl tracks, a small clear sprue, the decals and the instructions.
Plastic is correctly molded and parts are well detailed overall, with outstanding detail in the thin weld lines on the hull, as well as the sharpness of nut and rivet heads on some areas and parts. Trumpeter has not, however, reproduced the cast texture on the turret and this has flat sides. Also, there are visible marks on the inner sides of the commander’s hatch, on the muzzle brake and the inner face of the plastic tracks. These marks are not important, as they will be easy to remove, but there are lots of them on the tracks which will make cleanup tedious.
The number of parts is not higher because of the lack of an interior and assembly does not seem difficult. As in any kit, there are parts that can be improved, such as the tracks or the gun barrel, but in my opinion it is not essential to replace them.
The kit represents a KV-1 modified by the Germans. This unique and battle-tested tank received the designation Pz.Kpfw. KV-1 756(r). The tank was fitted the gun and commander’s cupola from an early Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G. The Germans also added the T-34 tank’s fume extractor to the turret and additional jerrycans.
Hull and running gear
The hull comes preformed in one piece without the rear side. There are two additional pieces overlapping the hull sides showing openings to attach different undercarriage parts.
The front hull plate is detailed with bases to add two shackles where we can place the towing cables. There is another reinforcement plate on the front and we also have the separate front reinforcement on the edge of the hull. At the rear there are a couple of pieces that simulate engine vents. Although they show good detail, they will be more realistic if replaced by photo-etched ones. We also have the rear light in a clear piece and two shackles like the front ones.
Each side of the undercarriage consists of an idler, a sprocket, six road wheels and three return rollers. Before building the suspension, the bump stops are attached. The idler shaft is molded with the transmission gear cover and shows very nice detail in the nut ring around it. Also the axes of the rollers have similar shapes. The suspension arms are in one piece except for the separate front cap detailed with three nuts. The arms show very thin seam lines that are not a problem to remove. On the other hand, the tensioner wheel axle is made up of two halves with a piece in the middle that represents the chain tensioning system.
The drive wheel consists of two separate pieces with well-defined teeth. The outer hub comes in two overlapping dishes showing nice rivets. The idler is also made up of two pieces with good detail in the gaps and the spokes are thin and profiled.
The road wheels are double with a poly-cap between them. External detail is crisp on the spokes and hub cover. The return rollers are also double, but the shaft cap is separate. Finally, the sprocket wheel locking system is molded in one piece and located in front of it.
Tracks
Trumpeter offers two choices. The vinyl tracks are made in two lengths and have very good detail for the media on both sides. The plastic tracks come in links and lengths. The upper section is molded simulating the sag between the return rollers. Detail is also pretty good on both sides and the only drawback is the ejector marks on the inner side that need to be cleaned, as mentioned.
Superstructure
The upper side of the hull comes in two pieces; one of them is the engine cover and the other includes the space between the front of the vehicle to the turret ring.
The glacis has an added armor plate on which several parts must be installed, such as the headlight, provided with a clear lens and even the bulb, the front visor, the driver’s sight and the machine gun. The weapon has a riveted mount and a separate, undrilled barrel.
The upper front deck has a bullet splash shield and the hatch with its ring and cover. The hatch comes nicely detailed inside. Not only does it have the full closing system, but it also has a separate hinge that allows it to be showed open.
The engine deck is well detailed and both the vents and access hatches are separate pieces. The vents are very good but molded solid and would look more real if replaced for photo-etched parts. The access covers are similar to those of the driver’s hatch with separate hinges. The central part of the cover comes in one piece, as do the exhaust pipes, which are thin and come open. There are also several tiny and delicate lifting hooks that need some care to handle. The tower ring is molded in one piece and has some marks that will be hidden when the turret is set.
The fenders are molded in one piece and have the stiffening bar on the underside. They have good detail in the riveted surfaces on the upper side. The underside has several marks, but again these will not be seen after installing the tracks. The fender supports are separate. Although the instructions indicate that the hollow supports must be used, the kit includes optional solid ones. On the fenders there is a spare box on the right side, spare track links and a basket to hold the jerrycans. The jerrycans are molded in halves with separate handles and caps.
The towing cables are made of twisted copper wire and have plastic shackles that are drilled through to insert the cable.
Turret
The turret base is a separate piece. In addition to the rear machine gun, identical to the one on the hull, the upper part has a hatch the same as the driver’s, with a well-detailed separate lid on the inside, several periscopes, the cover of the T-34 ventilator, which has its own gap on the turret and is not just glued on it, and a pair of handles.
The German cupola comes in halves with the internal visors and hatches separate. As I mentioned before, the hatches have shallow marks on the inner side.
The kit includes the Soviet KV-1 gun barrel and its mantlet. The German gun is nicely rendered in several parts and includes a separate coaxial machine gun. The barrel is molded in one piece with the muzzle brake. The brake has a separate front end to improve detail. The brake shows a seam line that need to be carefully removed, as well as the ejector mark already mentioned.
Decals
The small decal sheet only has two sets of black and white German crosses that look thin and are well printed.
Instructions
They consist of a 10-page folded brochure printed in black and white. The brochure shows a numbered parts plan and 18 construction sections. A separate sheet printed in color on glossy paper shows color profiles with Gunze Sangyo paint references. The exploded views are very clear.
Conclusion
Indeed It is strange to see a KV-1 «dressed» as a German tank and carrying unusual armament. This is certainly a very unique variant of the well-known Russian vehicle for those who want to build something quite different. Although it lacks an interior, Trumpeter did a good exercise in detail on the outside and the kit in some aspects has nothing to envy to other popular manufacturers’ offers. As said above, it doesn’t seem difficult to build even for those with basic skills. In addition, it does not necessarily need aftermarket parts such as the tracks or the barrel, which is another incentive for those who want to build the kit out of the box. For experienced modellers it can be a very good base for improvement if they wish to do so.
Being an uneven mix of two very different tanks, this kit can be a suitable touching stone for both Soviet and German armor fans.◊
