VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Más antigua y aún competitiva respecto a otras marcas. Buen equilibrio número de piezas/detalle. Probablemente no será el Jeep más completo hoy día, pero la sencillez de montaje lo hace ideal para cualquier modelista.

En 1997 Tamiya actualizó su antiguo Jeep Willys, simplificando el contenido de la edición y, obviamente, mejorando el molde. La maqueta anterior, de 1972, era sin duda peor pero la caja, además del vehículo, contenía un remolque y cuatro figuras en diferentes poses. En la edición actual se nota que la marca japonesa prefirió apostar por mejorar el vehículo y añadir algunos complementos básicos que permitiesen detallarlo sin excederse en el número de piezas. Tras esta maqueta, Tamiya puso a la venta una versión del SAS británico en 2012, pero en realidad se trata de una reedición del molde de Italeri.
La maqueta se reparte en dos bastidores de piezas, la carrocería por separado, un bastidor de piezas transparentes, la hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. Todo el contenido, incluida la carrocería, viene correctamente presentado en bolsas separadas.
Me parece innecesario señalar la calidad del material del fabricante, ya ampliamente conocida, y de la que esta maqueta es una muestra más. En el lado negativo sí hay que mencionar las marcas de eyector presentes en varias piezas. Las que nos interesan, por visibles, son las situadas en los respaldos de todos los asientos y en la cara interna del lado trasero del vehículo. Todas ellas son negativas y, afortunadamente, tenues. Por lo demás, no hay rebabas de mención y sí ligeras líneas de molde en la banda de rodadura de los neumáticos.
Tamiya ha concentrado el montaje en torno a dos partes principales de este vehículo: el bastidor del chasis y la carrocería, ambas de una pieza. El bastidor lleva integrada la parte inferior del motor. Este consiste en cuatro piezas (motor propiamente dicho, la culata, el ventilador moldeado con sus correas y el colector de escape). Aún hay otra más, compuesta de varias partes del motor en una única pieza entre las que sólo alcanzo a distinguir la batería. Esta pieza hay que añadirla una vez unidos el bastidor y la carrocería.
Los ejes delantero y trasero vienen en piezas separadas unidas a secciones del eje de la transmisión. Igualmente, la suspensión consiste en ballestas separadas unidas a sus respectivos amortiguadores. El tubo de escape se ha fabricado de una pieza con el silenciador y está unido a una pieza plana que semeja una protección de la transmisión y que le da cierta rigidez. El extremo anterior del tubo va unido, como corresponde, a la salida del colector del motor. Todo sencillo, realista hasta cierto punto y, aparentemente, muy fácil de montar.
La carrocería está completa, incluidos guardabarros y parrilla delantera, con la excepción del lado trasero, que es pieza aparte detallada con las luces traseras a tamaño aceptable y en relieve, la rueda de repuesto y un contenedor de gasolina compuesto de mitades y asas separadas. Ya ha quedado anotado arriba las marcas del lado trasero de la carrocería, pero también las hay en la cara inferior de esta (suelo y guardabarros) pero no se verán si colocamos el vehículo en su posición normal.
En la parte inferior de la carrocería hay que pegar la mitad del depósito de combustible, situado bajo el asiento del conductor y el eje del volante. Esto último hay que hacerlo antes de unir definitivamente el bastidor a la carrocería, ya que después puede resultar más complicado (no lo he comprobado). La unión bastidor-carrocería se realiza mediante cuatro puntos de ajuste que parecen darle buena estabilidad a todo el conjunto.
La parte delantera de la carrocería está detallada con una pieza que incluye el radiador y los faros, y que va colocada detrás de la parrilla delantera. La pared del motor es una pieza separada y está marrada por un par de marcas de eyector, negativas y tenues, que no estorbarán si no se muestra el capó abierto. El salpicadero es de una pieza, detallado con indicadores y la tapa de la guantera en relieve. Como de costumbre en maquetas de este tipo de vehículos, esta pieza va unida a una sección estrecha de la parte superior de la carrocería, situada justo por delante del capó. Las palancas me parecen bien definidas y tenemos incluso un pequeño extintor con su calca. Una omisión importante son los pedales, que Tamiya no incluyó y este hecho cuenta en la parte negativa de esta buena maqueta. Afortunadamente son piezas bastante sencillas de fabricar para cualquier modelista.
El capó viene completo y puede mostrarse abierto, pero su cara interna la afean otro grupo de marcas parecidas a las ya señaladas en otros lugares. La parte externa de la carrocería va detallada con diversos elementos fijos o de ocasión, como diversas asas, el bastidor plegado de la capota, el paragolpes, el faro auxiliar con su protector aparte, diversas herramientas, bomba de aire (también con calca), un subfusil Thompson enfundado y el retrovisor. Por otro lado, faltan las características asas en forma de T del capó que se pueden replicar con fotograbados.
El marco del parabrisas está fabricado de una pieza y entra a presión en la carrocería, operación siempre delicada. Los limpiaparabrisas van moldeados en la parte exterior y sus pequeños motores eléctricos son diminutas piezas separadas pegadas por el lado interno. Como extra, Tamiya ha incluido un rifle M1 en su soporte. Los cristales son dos piezas transparentes, muy claras y finas.
Los asientos, de detalle destacable, se componen de dos piezas, con el bastidor y el respaldo por un lado, y el asiento por el otro. El asiento del acompañante incluye una pieza más situada debajo que debe ser la capota plegada, supongo. Asientos y respaldos muestran cierto relieve y textura en las arrugas del forro.
Para dar algo de variedad a las diferentes opciones de montaje, podemos dotar a nuestro jeep con una barra cortacables delantera o una barra de remolque en forma de A. También disponemos de una buena ametralladora calibre 30 con su cargador de munición y su soporte. Para colocar este soporte sólo hay que abrir previamente el agujero marcado por debajo de la carrocería.
Las ruedas han sido moldeadas con habilidad. Están fabricadas en mitades, pero no simétricas, lo cual elimina la tradicional línea de unión justo en mitad de la banda de rodadura. En lugar de ello, Tamiya ha fabricado la llanta exterior y el neumático completo de un lado, y del otro la llanta interna. Las llantas muestran un buen detalle y llevan bujes y cubos diferentes en el tren delantero y en el trasero. Como ya se ha mencionado, hay que limpiar las líneas de molde de la banda de rodadura, tarea que no tiene especial dificultad.
Las únicas cuatro piezas transparentes pertenecen a los cristales del parabrisas y las lentes de los faros delanteros. Todas ellas están bien hechas, son finas y no presentan distorsiones.
La hoja de calcas está bien impresa y muestra matrículas, numerales de unidad y tácticos, rótulos y marcas norteamericanas. Los motivos están bien impresos y su apariencia es bastante fina. No deben dar problemas.
Las instrucciones están impresas en blanco y negro en un folleto doblado de 8 páginas. Muestran una introducción histórica del vehículo en varios idiomas, 13 secuencias generales de montaje con frecuentes notas informativas a lo largo del mismo, y las opciones de pintura y calcas. Las pinturas referenciadas son, obviamente, de la gama acrílica del fabricante. Todos los vehículos representados pertenecieron al Teatro de Operaciones Europeo. El folleto es claro y está bien impreso, aunque se hace algo engorroso de manejar al desplegarlo en su totalidad.

Como suele ser costumbre en la marca, la maqueta viene complementada con una figura. En este caso se trata de un conductor en uniforme norteamericano en postura relajada. Está despiezada en siete partes: tronco, extremidades, cabeza y casco por separado, y muestra un detalle bastante aceptable y definido en el atuendo (chaqueta, cinturón, polainas). La expresión de la cara no está mal y puede valerle a la mayoría, aunque a mi rara vez me gustan las cabezas de Tamiya. Para la versión de la Policía Militar hay también una calca para el casco.
Entre las variadas ofertas de maquetas de este vehículo aparecidas en los últimos años (Bronco, Dragón, y la reciente de Takom, de la que aún no he visto imágenes) y descartando otras más antiguas como la de Heller, Italeri y la edición anterior de la propia Tamiya, este Jeep Willys sigue siendo una opción a tener muy en cuenta incluso por los modelistas más exigentes. La maqueta, como todas, es mejorable, pero sin duda aún sigue siendo muy competitiva en cuanto a precio, calidad, facilidad de montaje. Lástima que Tamiya no se haya decidido a sacar más versiones con este molde.◊
In 1997 Tamiya released a new tooling of their Willys Jeep, simplifying the box content and greatly improving the kit. The older edition, dating back from 1972, was obviously worse but it was rounded with a trailer and four figures in different poses. In the current edition Tamiya clearly decided to improve the vehicle and add only a few accessories to spice it up, keeping a low parts count. In 2012 Tamiya released a British SAS version which has nothing to do with this kit, just being a reissue of the Italeri tooling.
The kit comprises two sprues, a separate body, a clear sprue, the decal sheet and the instructions. All the box content, including the body, comes neatly bagged.
I think unnecessary to describe the quality of parts as this is well-known by most modellers and the kit is just but another example of that. On the negative side, however, I have to point out a good bunch of negative sink marks on some parts. The most bothering ones, as they are visible, are those on the seat backs and on the inner side of the rear body side. Fortunately, all of them are quite shallow and will be easily dealt with. There is no flash present on parts, except for the tyre treads, which show a thin seam line.
Tamiya focused the assembly on two main areas in this kit: the chassis frame and the body, both made in one part. The frame comes with the bottom section of the engine molded on. This consists of four parts (the engine itself, the fan and belts, the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head). There is one more engine part comprising several elements in one piece, but only the battery can be clearly distinguished. This piece must be added once the frame and body are joined.
Front and rear axles come in separate parts and have a section of the drive shaft. In the same way, the suspension comprises separate leaf springs molded with the shock absorbers. The exhaust pipe is molded with the muffler and attached to a flat piece that seems a kind of plank to protect the drive shaft. The front end of the pipe must be glued, as appropriate, to the exhaust manifold. Assembly is made simple, straightforward and somewhat realistic.
The jeep body comes in one piece, including mudguards and front grill but not the rear side, which is a separate part showing raised taillights and reflectors, the spare wheel holder and a separate jerrycan comprising two halves and handles. As said above, there are sink marks on the inner side of the rear body part, but also on the bottom side (floor and mudguards) that will be invisible provided we place the vehicle in the normal position.
In the bottom side of the body you need to add the fuel tank bottom half, placed under the driver’s position and the steering column. This last step must be done at this stage, before attaching the body and frame, because it may be more difficult to do it later (I have not checked that). The frame-body assembly is made by means of four locating pins that seem to provide a steady join.
The body front section has a separate part including both headlamps and the radiator to be placed behind the front grill. The engine firewall is also a separate part and shows a few shallow sink marks on the outer side that won´t be bothering unless you place the hood open. The dashboard comes in one piece with raised gauges and glove compartment cover. As usual in this kind of kits, the dashboard is attached to a narrow section of the front body just behind the hood. Levers have good definition and are thin and we even have a small fire extinguisher with its own decal. Unluckily, the pedals are missing and this is not a good asset for the kit, but any modeller can build new ones without difficulty.
The hood is a separate part and can be shown open, but the inner side is again marred by sink marks as the ones described above. Around the body there are some parts to add, such as several handles, the folded canvas frame, the bumper, the blackout light and guard, different tools, an air pump (also provided with a decal), a Thompson sub-machine gun inside its holster and the rearview. However, the four T clips for the hood and windshield are missing but can be replaced with PE parts if you wish.
The windshield frame comes in one part inserted under pressure into the body so that it can be opened. The windshield wipers are molded on the outside and the small electric motors are tiny separate pieces glued on the inside. As an extra, Tamiya has included an M1 rifle in its holder. The windshields are two transparent pieces, thin and very clear.
The seats have good detail and comprise two parts, one is the frame molded with the back and the other is the seat. The passenger seat has an extra part that seems to correspond to the folded canvas, I suppose. Both seats and backs show some nice texturizing.
To spice up the different assembly choices the vehicle can be provided with a front cutter-bar or an A frame tow bar. We also have a nice .30 cal machine-gun with ammo box and mount for the rear compartment. To fit the mount you only have to open the pre drilled position on the bottom body side.
The wheels have been wisely molded. They come in two parts, but not in the usual symmetrical halves that leave a line along the tread. Instead, Tamiya made the outer hub and the whole tyre in one part and the inner hub on the other. The hubs look great and have different shapes for the front and rear axles as they should. As mentioned earlier, there is some slight seam lines to clean on the treads but this is not troublesome.
The only four clear parts correspond to the windshields and the front lenses. All of them are correctly made, are thin and have no distortion.
The decal sheet is finely printed and shows body serial numbers, US markings, unit and tactical codes and other stencils. They look thin and should not give any problem when set on the model.
Instructions come in an 8-page folded leaflet printed in black and white. They show a short introduction to the vehicle in several languages, 13 main assembly steps with callouts throughout the build, and painting/decalling options. All the vehicles shown were present in the European Theater of Operations. The leaflet is clear and well printed, although it is somewhat inconvenient to handle when unfolded completely.

As usual with Tamiya, the kit includes a figure, in this case a US driver sitting in a relaxed pose. It comes in seven parts (trunk, limbs, head and a separate helmet) and shows decent detail and good definition in the outfit, particularly in the jacket, belt and leggings. Face expression is not bad and may be OK for most modellers, though I rarely like Tamiya’s heads. There is an MP decal for the helmet if you choose to build that version.
Given the handful of kits that have appeared in the last years (Bronco, Dragon, and the recent Takom kit, of which I have not yet seen images) and discarding the older Heller, Italeri and the first Tamiya tooling, this Willys Jeep remains a choice to be considered even by the most demanding modelers. The kit, as any, has room for detailing, but I think it is still very competitive in terms of price, quality and ease of assembly. Too bad Tamiya has not decided to release more versions with this tooling.◊
