Parte de los tractores semiorugas franceses Unic P107 capturados en 1940 fueron convertidos por los alemanes en semiorugas blindados en 1944 a imagen de sus Sd.Kfz. 250 y usados en Normandía. Por las fotos de época tomadas antes o durante la batalla, parece que hubo varias versiones: con cañón anticarro de 37 mm. Pak 36, vehículo de mando con radio, antiaéreo (dotada de un Flak 38 de 20 mm con remolque de munición), ambulancia sin armamento y transporte de tropas con dos ametralladoras y escudo protector delantero. Estas dos últimas versiones son las que contiene esta maqueta de Ace.
La caja contiene cuatro pequeños bastidores, una plancha de fotograbado con las cadenas, las calcas y las instrucciones. Todo el contenido cabe en un par de bolsas con cierre, embalaje ideal para estas maquetas de dimensiones muy reducidas. El plástico es el habitual de estas ediciones limitadas, pero sin marcas de eyector y con ligeras rebabas en algunas piezas, fáciles de eliminar.
El habitual estudio de las instrucciones antes de comenzar a montar la maqueta se convierte en este caso en imprescindible. En parte esto se debe a las instrucciones, poco claras en determinados casos, y también al pequeño tamaño de algunas piezas. El montaje no es difícil, pero necesita algo más de cuidado al ensamblar la suspensión y el tren de rodaje trasero (muy bien detallado para la escala, por cierto), las cadenas de fotograbado y la superestructura blindada.
Las cadenas deben doblarse antes de colocarlas, pero las instrucciones apenas muestran un esquema simplísimo de cómo hacerlo y hay que interpretarlo bien a la primera porque no creo que se puedan hacer rectificaciones sin partirlas. Una vez montado el tren de rodaje y la base del vehículo, hay que colocar la parte superior del chasis. Éste consiste simplemente en dos mitades longitudinales a las que simplemente hay que añadir la rejilla frontal del motor y el capó. No he hecho pruebas con la maqueta, por ello no puedo asegurar que las piezas encajen correctamente. Parece dudoso que lo hagan. Desgraciadamente las escotillas traseras de acceso y las mirillas frontales vienen cerradas, una pena porque hubiese mejorado mucho el aspecto final.
El interior es muy completo. La zona de conducción lleva dos asientos, dos palancas, panel de instrumentos y volante, en general los mismos elementos que se aprecian en alguna foto del U-304(f). La zona de transporte presenta bancos corridos para las tropas. Las MG42 de la versión de transporte están bien representadas para el tamaño que tienen.
La hojita de calcas, bien impresa, es mínima pero suficiente para las dos versiones del vehículo, que además llevan matrículas diferentes. Como queda señalado, el único inconveniente de las instrucciones es la escasa claridad en la colocación de algunas piezas y en cómo doblar las cadenas. Las referencias de color aparecen genéricamente señaladas como «verde medio» y «marrón medio», pero creo que a estas alturas el modelista no debe tener mayores problemas en traducir dichas referencias a colores alemanes de sus pinturas favoritas.
Con esta maqueta poco corriente, Ace vuelve a confirmar que es un fabricante con uno de los catálogos más interesantes de vehículos que otros pasan por alto. Maqueta recomendable para cualquier modelista aficionado a la escala salvo principiantes.◊
Part of the French artillery half-tracks Unic P107 captured by the Germans in 1940 were converted to armored half-tracks in a similar design to their Sd.Kfz. 251 series and fielded in Normandy. From some pics taken before and during the battle, it seems there were several versions of the vehicle: one armed with an AT 37mm gun Pak 36, command/radio vehicle, AA version (carrying a 20mm Flak 38 with trailer), ambulance and troop carrier with two machine-guns, one of them with front shield. You can build one of these two last versions with this Ace kit.
The box contains four small sprues, a PE fret with the tracks, a decal sheet and the instructions. Everything but the instructions come in two small self-sealing bags, perhaps the most suitable container for tiny kits such as this. Plastic is the typical in short runs, but this time there are no ejector marks and only some minor flash on some parts that can be easily removed.
The usual careful study of the instructions prior to assembly is more necessary than ever in this kit. Partly because the instructions are a bit vague sometimes, and also because of the really small size of some bits. Assembly is not especially difficult, but you need extra care when handling and building the suspension and the rear road wheels (finely detailed for the scale, by the way), the PE tracks and the armored superstructure.
Tracks are folded prior to use, but the instructions barely show a simplistic diagram to do this that must be understood clearly, because I don’t think you will have a second chance to fold them again if you make mistakes. They are too thin and could be broken. Once the rear wheels and the base are assembled, the build continues with the superstructure. This consists of two length halves which are only added the hood and the front engine grill. I haven’t tested fitting so I can’t guarantee they match correctly. At first sight this seems unlikely. Unfortunately, rear hatches and front sights are molded closed, and it’s a pity because this could have improved the kit a bit more.
The interior is very well done. The driver position includes two seats, two levers, instrument panel and steering wheel, overall the same things as can be seen in pics of the real vehicle. The rear part has benches for the troops. The MG42 machine-guns are also well done for the scale.
The small decal sheet is tiny but enough for the two options which have even different plate numbers. As noted, the only drawback of the instructions is the vague location of some parts and the way to fold the tracks. Color references are generically called «medium green» and «medium brown», but the average modeler shouldn’t have problems to translate them into German colors in his favourite paint range.
With this unusual kit Ace proves again that their catalogue is one of the most interesting for vehicles which other manufacturers just ignore. This is a recommendable kit to any German armor fan at this scale except beginners.◊
