VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Acaso un antiguo molde de ESCI con sus ventajas (montaje) y debilidades (omisiones). Fácil maqueta para inexpertos y buena base para añadir detalle para los experimentados.

Derivado de la serie del M113 que Italeri reedita de cuando en cuando, el M106 tiene también toda la pinta de ser una reedición de la antigua maqueta de ESCI, aunque no puedo asegurarlo a ciencia cierta porque no he visto esta última maqueta. La caja contiene tres bastidores de piezas, la mitad inferior del casco por separado, una pequeña hoja de calcas y las instrucciones.
El plástico es típico de Italeri en esta escala: fino, bien moldeado y detallado, sin restos de expulsor y con algunas tenues marcas negativas de eyector, casi todas en sitios invisibles al montar la maqueta.
La parte inferior del casco viene de una pieza, moldeada junto con los brazos de la suspensión. Las ruedas tractoras y tensoras son dobles y su detalle es bueno para la escala. Sin embargo, el tren de rodaje sólo muestra las ruedas exteriores y carece de las interiores. La ausencia no se notará mucho, pero el modelista inconformista las podrá replicar con cierta facilidad en plástico. Las cadenas son de tramos y eslabones, estos últimos van pegados alrededor de las tensoras y tractoras, y los tramos de distinta longitud completan el resto del perímetro. El detalle no es excepcional, pero sí al menos decente para la escala. Hay también dos guardabarros opcionales en piezas completas a cada lado.
El agobiado interior del M106 real está aquí muy poco representado y creo que aún lo estaría menos si no fuera por el mortero. Hay dos mamparos para tapar la zona izquierda del conductor, que queda completamente vacía. En la zona trasera tenemos el asiento del jefe de carro plegado y su soporte, el mortero compuesto de un tubo y alza en una pieza y la base. La zona trasera del vehículo viene provista de suelo antideslizante de buena factura. Todo el interior es muy básico y deja campo para añadir más detalle si se desea, especialmente si vamos a dejar el vehículo abierto y el arma en posición de disparo.
La parte superior del casco viene de una pieza completa a la que sólo le falta el panel trasero y la cubierta, ambas piezas separadas. El ajuste de estas piezas es muy bueno, lo cual simplificará mucho el montaje. La zona delantera está detallada con rejillas de ventilación y la escotilla del conductor, que puede ponerse abierta, dotada de periscopios perimetrales. La parte frontal está dotada de acceso al motor en pieza aparte, una pala y los faros, que son dos sencillas piezas desiguales. En esta ocasión los faros están simplemente ahuecados, lo que da la posibilidad de fabricar los cristales con algún líquido de acabado transparente que les dé más realismo.
La cubierta superior dispone de una escotilla para el comandante con anillo de visores separado, el afuste de la ametralladora y la cubierta que puede mostrase abierta. La ametralladora es básica, con buenas formas para el tamaño, aunque los asideros de disparo están moldeados en la misma pieza. El cargador viene por separado. La apertura del mortero también puede mostrarse cerrada o bien abierta y plegada en tres secciones.
El lado trasero es de una pieza con los guardabarros incluidos y un hueco para la rampa trasera, que puede mostrase abatida. La escotilla de acceso posterior está moldeada con la rampa y viene cerrada. El exterior se completa con un pequeño contenedor de gasolina y otra alza y base del mortero para fijar la pieza fuera del vehículo. Estas piezas están estibadas a un lado del casco.
La hoja de calcas es pequeña y no exhaustiva. Incluye insignias norteamericanas (estrellas blancas y negras), cruces griegas, estarcidos estadounidenses y números para el vehículo griego. Las calcas parecen muy finas, tienen colores saturados y sin exceso de película. Creo que darán buen resultado.
Las instrucciones están impresas en un folleto doblado de 8 páginas que muestra una breve introducción histórica en varios idiomas, un plano de piezas, 10 pasos muy claros de montaje y una guía para pintar la maqueta y ponerle las calcas. Los vehículos van pintados en idéntico e intrincado camuflaje MERDC, excepto el norteamericano de Vietnam que aparece pintado entero de Olive Drab. Las referencias de color aparecen en el código Federal Standard y en acrílicos de Italeri.
Esta es una maqueta sencilla de montar, imagino que como toda la serie del M113 de Italeri a la escala. Susceptible de ser mejorada por los más expertos, pero también ideal para los que lo son menos. Imagino que también la marca italiana ha pensado en ello, considerando los dos tipos de patrones de pintura que aparecen en las instrucciones.◊
Derived from the same M113 kit that Italeri releases from time to time, the 1/72 M106 seems a rebox of the old ESCI tooling, but I have never seen this kit, so I can´t assert they are both one and the same. The box contains three plastic sprues, the bottom hull, a small decal sheet and the instructions.
Plastic is Italeri´s typical at the scale, thin well molded and detailed, without flash and having only a few shallow ejector marks, mostly invisible when the kit is finished.
The bottom half of the hull is a separate piece molded with the suspension arms. Idlers and sprockets comprise two parts with decent detail for the scale. Unfortunately, road wheels lack the interior wheel. This won´t be very visible but the experienced modeller may wish to replicate them in plastic as this won´t be very difficult. Tracks are the link and length type, with links around idlers and sprockets and lengths completing the rest of the track gaps. Detail on tracks is OK for this scale, but not outstanding, and fitting of the links around the sprockets will have to be checked. There are also two optional mudguards on each side.
Obviously, the busy interior of a real M106 is not thoroughly replicated in the kit and I think it would still be less if there wasn´t a weapon inside the hull. There are two interior bulkheads to cover the empty driver´s station on the left. In the rear section we can find the commander´s seat and its base and the mortar, comprising the barrel and the elevating gear in one piece and a separate baseplate. The interior rear non-skid floor of the vehicle is nicely rendered. All the interior is quite basic and leaves room for improvement if you wish, especially if you intend to leave the kit open and the gun in the firing position.
The upper half of the hull comes in one part without the rear and part of the top plate, which come separately. Fitting of these with the hull body is fine and this means assembly will be easier. The hull front section has raised exhaust and intake grills and the driver´s hatch with all-round vision blocks and a separate door that can be posed open. The front side of the vehicle has a separate trim vane, a shovel and headlight clusters. Headlights are basic and come hollowed without lenses, so this can be a good chance to make them with glue or any other modelling product that has a clear and shiny finish once dried.
The top deck has another hatch for the commander, but this time the periscope ring is a separate piece and we also have the machine-gun mount and the hatch door that can be shown open too. The machine-gun is quite basic with poor handles molded in the part and separate ammo box. The mortar opening ring can be built in the closed or folded position, in this last case you have to glue the three separate hatch sections.
The rear wall is a separate piece molded with the mudguards and having an opening for the ramp, which can be shown lowered. The rear access hatch is molded closed with the ramp. Outside the hull you have a few parts to spice up your model, such as a small fuel jerrycan, and spare baseplate and elevating gear that are used to fire the weapon outside the carrier. These pieces are stowed on the side of the hull.
The decal sheet is small and not comprehensive. It includes US markings (black and white stars), Greek crosses, US stencils and numbers for the Greek Army version. Decals look quite thin, have saturated colors and no excess of carrier film. I think they will work well.
Instructions are printed in an 8-page folded leaflet that show a short historical introduction in several languages, 10 very clear assembly steps and a guide to paint and set decals. The vehicles shown are painted in MERDC camouflage pattern, except for the Vietnam mortar carrier that is painted overall Olive Drab. Color references are given in Federal Standard codes and Italeri acrylic paints.
This is a simple model to build, like all the series of Italeri´s M113 family at the scale, I guess. The kit still has room to be improved by the experienced modeller, but it is also ideal for newbies. I imagine that the Italian company has also thought about it, considering the two types of paint patterns that appear in the instructions.◊
