- Combina un cierto nivel de detalle con un montaje bien pensado para que resulte más fácil que en otras maquetas de más renombre. Parece ideal para el modelista medio y muy recomendable para quien deteste los despieces llevados al extremo.

La maqueta
Hace ya una década desde que Academy lanzó esta maqueta que complementó con la versión de mando (Panzerbefehlswagen 35(t)). Este molde también lo ha usado Airfix recientemente. Varios fabricantes, CMK desde hace muchos años y Bronco Models hace menos, tienen también en su catálogo maquetas de las tres variantes alemanas de este carro, incluido el tractor de artillería Mörser Zugmittel 35(t).
En la caja hay hasta 10 bastidores de piezas, tres de ellos repetidos, un trozo de hilo trenzado, las calcas y las instrucciones. El número de piezas sobrepasa las 300, pero en la cuenta entran los eslabones de las cadenas y, en esta ocasión, los 12 contenedores de combustible (jerrycans) que Academy ha incluido en la edición. Entre las piezas encontramos las figuras del comandante y del conductor.
El plástico es fino, las piezas están muy limpias y bien moldeadas. No hay rebabas y sólo he encontrado marcas de eyector evidentes en las tapas de la escotilla del comandante y el conductor. A las figuras me referiré en su lugar, pero avanzo que poseen ligeras líneas de molde esperables en cualquier fabricante que las produzca de plástico.
La maqueta representa un carro ligero PzKpfw. 35(t) de origen checo empleado por los alemanes en Polonia, Francia y Rusia durante los primeros años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Para darle más empaque a esta edición, tanto en la caja como las instrucciones se nos indica que el Instituto de Historia Militar de Praga le ha dado el visto bueno a esta maqueta.
Casco y tren de rodaje
El despiece del casco es convencional y se compone de varios lados que deben alinearse para formar la estructura. El fondo y los laterales han sido moldeados con líneas en relieve que permiten alinearlos. Hay dos planchas más en el frontal y otras dos en la parte trasera. Aunque el interior está vacío, Academy ha incluido un panel vertical justo en medio del fondo. Parece que su función es dar una cierta rigidez al chasis y también ayudar a sujetar los lados del vehículo. Todas las piezas mencionadas muestran en su exterior superficies con remaches finos y limpios. Los laterales incluyen los ejes de los rodillos de retorno y los de los carretones del tren de rodaje. A la plancha frontal del casco puede añadirse la base donde se ubica el conductor si se desea incluir esta media figura. La cubierta del diferencial viene por separado y moldeada con el eje de la rueda situada detrás, mientras que la tractora tiene también el eje moldeado en otra pieza más pequeña.
El complejo tren de rodaje del 35(t) está bien despiezado para que el montaje no se convierta en un rompecabezas y ciertamente parece más fácil de montar de lo que aparenta. Los rodillos de retorno están formados por ruedas pareadas. Sin la información técnica que no poseo es difícil adivinar cuál es la rueda tractora en realidad, ya que la tensora y tractora están dotadas de dientes. Parece, por la situación del diferencial, que la tractora real iba detrás. Las ruedas tractoras las componen dos discos dotados de dientes, un disco interno de cierre y un plato exterior con tuercas bien perfiladas. La tensora tiene los mismos componentes, pero el disco externo no muestra el mismo tipo de fijación al eje, estando igualmente bien detallado.
El tren de rodaje está compuesto de una rueda suelta delantera y dos carretones de ocho ruedas montadas a pares en dobles brazos de suspensión. Academy ha despiezado el sistema en tres secciones, dos externas y una interna, para colocar las ruedas en medio, coronadas por ballestas dobles de una pieza pegadas sobre un soporte transversal. La rueda suelta delantera va sujeta por una horquilla formada por dos mitades y situada por debajo de la rueda tensora delantera. Las ruedas del tren de rodaje muestran las bandas de caucho y los remaches bien definidos.
Cadenas
Están divididas en tramos y eslabones. Los eslabones están bien representados, no tienen marcas y muestran aberturas holgadas para los dientes de las ruedas. El tramo superior de cada lado está fabricado con una ondulación realista para simular la caída entre los rodillos de retorno.
Superestructura
Los guardabarros vienen de una pieza no demasiado fina pero aceptable. Van unidos al casco mediante pestañas y dos piezas transversales que encajan en ranuras practicadas a los lados del guardabarros y que les sirven de soporte. Es aconsejable hacer pruebas en seco con el tramo superior de las cadenas, aunque da la sensación de que no habrá problemas con la holgura entre el tramo y el guardabarros.
La superestructura ha sido fabricada de una pieza, que no contiene la plancha trasera de acceso al motor y dos pequeñas superficies situadas a ambos lados de esta. El remachado es limpio y convincente. En la parte frontal los visores del conductor y del operador de radio vienen cerrados y la mirilla situada en el lado derecho del puesto de conducción está bien marcada aunque también aparece cerrada. La cubierta del motor está detallada con dos compuertas de acceso que presentan bisagras finas y un asa demasiado plana.
La parte delantera de la superestructura cuenta con la ametralladora separada de su soporte, un faro Notek, la mira del conductor (o eso parece), el soporte de la antena y un faro alemán de conducción nocturna con el que Academy ha sustituido el original checo con el que se ve esta carro en muchas fotos. Sin embargo, la bocina es de tipo checo. La antena no viene mencionada en las instrucciones. La escotilla del conductor tiene las tapas separadas sin detalle externo, pero con el almohadillado interno y marcas de eyector que deben eliminarse si se va a mostrar el acceso abierto.
La plancha trasera separada lleva los accesos al motor grabados y dotados de bisagras finas. Antes de pegar esta pieza hay que decidir si se van a usar los soportes de los contenedores de combustible situados sobre esta plancha, ya que deben abrirse los agujeros situados en el lado interno.
Academy ha incluido un tramo de hilo trenzado para simular las cadenas de arrastre. Los ojales son de plástico. El cable puede situarse sobre la cubierta del motor, como era habitual en la campaña de Francia, o enrollado en los ganchos de arrastre delanteros, como en la campaña rusa. En ambos casos las instrucciones muestran la longitud real del cable, que es diferente en cada caso.
Torre
Al igual que el casco, el interior de la torre está vacío. La base y la parte superior están separadas. Sobre la pieza inferior sólo hay que colocar una sección remachada de la zona delantera del anillo y una pieza que sirve de base a la figura del comandante.
La pieza superior muestra un remachado bien representado, como en otras zonas de la maqueta. El mantelete y su base vienen separados. Del cañón solo tenemos la parte externa visible con el recuperador aparte. En el interior el cañón está sujeto al mantelete por dos grapas que hacen posible alzarlo o deprimirlo. El cañón no está mal, e incluso la boca está horadada, pero no puede competir con un sustituto de aluminio. La ametralladora coaxial y el soporte son idénticas a las del casco y vienen por separado.
La escotilla del comandante tiene los periscopios separados, al igual que la tapa, que consta de tres piezas y muestra el extractor de humos y el almohadillado interno.
Figuras
Como he mencionado, la maqueta incluye dos figuras. El comandante está representado de cuerpo completo apoyado en la escotilla de la torre, con las piernas unidas a las caderas y separadas en dos piezas, los brazos también separados y el tronco de una pieza. La pistola en su funda viene aparte. Los detalles del uniforme, especialmente las solapas y las insignias situadas sobre ellas, así como los botones, no están nada mal definidos y sólo hay que limpiar algunas finas líneas de molde.
El conductor está moldeado solo de cintura para arriba, y únicamente tiene la cabeza separada. Los detalles del uniforme no son tan buenos, en parte por ser más simples. Los brazos unidos al tronco no benefician a esta figura porque le dan un aire rígido.
Las cabezas vienen separadas y moldeadas con los auriculares puestos. Academy ha tenido el acierto de incluir dos opciones en los tocados, de esta manera se puede situar la maqueta en diferentes momentos de la guerra. Dos de las cabezas llevan la boina de carrista (Schutzmütze) típica del periodo inicial de la guerra (campañas de Polonia y Francia) y las otras dos la gorra de carrista (Feldmütze) posterior, con detalles diferenciados para el oficial y el conductor. Los auriculares no están mal, pero los micrófonos apenas se ven al estar moldeados sobre cuellos muy cortos. Las caras muestran gestos diferentes y los rasgos faciales están definidos adecuadamente.
Calcas
La pequeña hoja contiene cruces alemanas, números y marcas tácticas. Las calcas tienen aspecto fino y acabado brillante.
Instrucciones
Vienen en un folleto de tamaño A4 de 8 páginas plegadas impresas en blanco y negro. El folleto contiene una tabla de colores con equivalentes en pinturas de Humbrol, Mr Color, Life Color, Testor/Model Master, Revell y Vallejo, un plano numerado de piezas y 11 capítulos de montaje. Una hoja separada muestra las opciones de pintura. Las indicaciones son muy claras y, como curiosidad, la pintura de las figuras está representada con fotos de ellas en lugar de dibujos.
Valoración
Aunque es cierto que la maqueta de Bronco Models es mucho mejor en detalle, especialmente por tener un interior bastante completo y cadenas articulables, también resulta más compleja, y por tanto más lenta, de montar. Creo que para el modelista de nivel inicial o medio la mejor opción es la maqueta de Academy, que no renuncia al detalle y el montaje es mucho más simple. A los que no les importe perderse el interior también puede venirles bien.
Igualmente, la inclusión de dos figuras debe constar en el haber de esta edición. Por mucho que su factura no sea excepcional, sí es al menos bastante decente.◊
The kit
It’s been a decade or more since Academy released this kit which they supplemented with the command version (Panzerbefehlswagen 35(t)). This tool has also been used by Airfix recently. Several manufacturers, CMK or Bronco Models for instance, have also released kits of the three German variants of this tank, including the Mörser Zugmittel 35(t) artillery tractor.
In the box there are up to 10 sprues, three of them doubled, a piece of twisted thread, the decals and the instructions. The number of pieces exceeds 300, but the track links are also included in the count and, on this occasion, the 12 jerrycans that Academy has attached in the release. Among the pieces we find the figures of the commander and the driver.
Plastic is thin and pieces are very clean and well molded. There is no flash and I have only found evident marks on the commander’s and driver’s hatch covers. I will refer to the figures below, but now I only want to state that they have slight seam lines expected in any manufacturer of plastic figures.
The kit represents a PzKpfw. 35(t) light tank of Czech origin used by the Germans in Poland, France and Russia during the first years of World War II. To boast a little, both the box and the instructions tell us that the Institute of Military History in Prague has approved of this kit.
Hull and running gear
The hull breakup is conventional comprising several sides to be aligned. The bottom and the sides have been molded with raised lines to allow their correct alignment. There are two more plates in the front and another two in the back. Although the interior is empty, Academy has included a vertical panel right in the middle of the bottom piece. The panel seems to give a certain rigidity to the chassis and also to help align the vehicle sides. All these pieces show exterior surfaces with fine and clean rivets. The sides include the return roller and bogies shafts. There is also a small base to be added to the front hull if you wish to use the driver’s half figure. The differential cover comes separately and is molded with the axle of the drive wheel, while the idler, which is smaller, also has the axle molded on.
The 35(t)’s complex running gear is wisely broken up so assembly doesn’t become a puzzle, and it certainly looks easier to build than it seems. The return rollers are made up of paired wheels. Without any technical information, as it is my case, it is difficult to guess which is in fact the sprocket wheel, since the idler and sprocket are both provided with teeth. It seems that the real sprocket was behind, considering the position of the differential. The drive wheels comprise two discs with teeth, an internal disc and an external dish with well-shaped nuts. The idler has the same components, but the external dish does not show the same type of bolts, being equally well detailed.
The running gear on each side consists of a loose front wheel and two eight-wheel bogies mounted in pairs on double suspension arms. Academy has molded the system into three sections, two external and one internal, to place the wheels in bettween, topped by one-piece double leaf springs glued onto a cross support. The front sprocket is held in place by a bracket molded in halves and located below the front sprocket. The runnung gear wheels show well defined rubber tires and rivets.
Tracks
They come in lengths and links. The links are well represented, are clean and show nice openings for the teeth. The top legth of each side is molded with a realistic ondulation to render the sag between the return rollers.
Superstructure
The fenders come in one piece that is not too thin but looks acceptable. They are attached to the hull by means of tabs and two cross pieces that fit into slots on the fender sides. It seems sensible to test the upper track length, but, apparently, there should not be any problems with the gap between each length and the fender.
The superstructure has been molded in one piece that does not include the rear engine access plate and two small planks located on both rear sides. Rivets are neat and convincing. On the front, the driver’s and radio operator’s visors are closed and the slit located on the driver’s right side is engraved but closed. The engine cover is detailed with two access hatches that show thin hinges and a too flat handle.
The superstructure front includes the machine gun detached from its mount, a Notek headlamp, the driver’s sight (or so it seems), the antenna base, and a German night vision headlamp with which Academy has replaced the Czech original lamp that can be seen in many pics of this tank. However, the horn is a Czech type. The antenna is not mentioned in the instructions. The driver’s hatch has separate covers with no external detail, but with internal padding and ejector marks that should be removed if the hatches are posed open.
The rear plate has engraved engine panels provided with thin hinges. Before gluing this piece you must decide whether to use the jerrycan racks as the holes located on the internal side must be drilled at this stage.
Academy has included a section of twisted thread to render the towing cables. The eyelets are plastic pieces. The cable can be placed on the engine cover, as was commonly carried in the French campaign, or coiled on the front towing hooks, as in the Russian campaign. In both cases the instructions show the actual length of the cable, which is different in each case.
Turret
Like the hull, the turret interior is empty. The turret base and the top are separate parts. The lower part has a riveted section of the front ring and the base for the commander figure.
The upper section shows nice rivetted lines as in other areas of the kit. The mantlet and its base come separately. We only have the visible external part of the gun with the recuperator in a separate piece. The section of the gun hidden behind the mantlet is attached to it by means of two brackets that allow to raise or depress the barrel. The barrel isn’t bad, and even the muzzle is hollowed, but it can’t compete with an aluminum replacement. The coaxial machine gun and mount are identical to those on the hull and come separately.
The commander’s hatch has separate periscopes. The cover consists of three pieces and shows the fume extractor and internal padding.
Figures
As I mentioned, the kit includes two figures. The commander is represented in full body leaning on the turret hatch. It is molded with the legs attached to the hips and separated in two pieces, the arms are also separate pieces and the trunk is in one piece. His gun in the holster is a nice addition. Uniform details, especially the lapels, badges and buttons are not bad at all and there is only some thin seam lines to be cleaned up.
The driver is rendered only from the waist up, with only his head separated. Detail on the uniform is not as good, partly because the figure is simpler. His arms next to the body give this figure a stiff pose.
The heads come separate and molded with the headphones. Academy has been wise to include two options in the headwear, this way the model can be placed at different times of the war. Two of the heads wear a tanker’s beret (Schutzmütze) typical of the initial period of the war (Polish and French campaigns) and the other two the later tanker’s cap (Feldmütze), with different details for the officer and the driver. The headphones aren’t bad, but the microphones are barely visible as they are molded on very short necks. The faces show different gestures and the facial features are nicely rendered.
Decals
The small sheet contains German crosses, numbers and tactical markings. The decals have a thin appearance and a glossy finish.
Instructions
They come in an eight page A4 size folded booklet printed in black and white. It contains a color chart with paint equivalents from Humbrol, Mr Color, Life Color, Testor/Model Master, Revell and Vallejo, a numbered parts plan and 11 assembly sections. A separate sheet shows the paint options with profiles of two overall gray tanks belonging to the 6th Panzer Division. Both show the additional fuel containers, which seem more typical of a tank present in Russia. The instructions are very clear and, as a curiosity, the painting of the figures is shown with photos instead of drawings.
Conclusion
Although it is clear the Bronco Models kit is much better in detail, especially for having a fairly complete interior and articulated tracks, it is also more complex, and therefore slower to build. I think the Academy kit is more suitable for the beginner or intermediate modeller as it does not compromise on detail and assembly is much simpler. Those who can live with an empty interior can also take advantage of this kit.
Also, the inclusion of two figures is another asset of this release. As much as they are not top notch, they are at least pretty decent.◊
