Tras aparecer la versión a 1/35 de este vehículo en 2005, Italeri aprovechó la ocasión para sacarlo también en la escala menor pocos meses después. La maqueta se compone simplemente de una grapa con 59 piezas, las calcas y las instrucciones. Obviamente el producto no es comparable con los que Dragón y Trumpeter nos tienen acostumbrados en los últimos tiempos, aunque también es cierto que un exceso de detalles puede transformar una maqueta en un suplicio inacabable y más a esta escala. A pesar de su sencillez, la maqueta no contiene omisiones ni errores importantes que impidan montar este atractivo coche blindado con un buen nivel de detalle. El molde es bastante bueno y las piezas son razonablemente finas para la escala, con alguna excepción que mencionaré luego. No hay rebabas ni marcas de eyector en sitios críticos y en general se trata de una maqueta pensada para montarla en poco tiempo con detalles del original bastante bien estudiados.
El montaje es muy sencillo y sorprende lo bien que encajan las piezas. Comienza uniendo las mitades superior e inferior del casco, que están perfectamente alineadas, y se continúa con el tren de rodaje. La parte inferior está bien detallada pese a que la transmisión y el chasis aparecen ya moldeados en la sección inferior del casco para simplificar el montaje. Con sólo añadir los tres ejes, la suspensión y las ruedas, ya tenemos el vehículo listo para la siguiente fase que consiste en montar la torreta y todos los elementos que van sobre la parte superior. Los guardabarros vienen fabricados de una sola pieza. El casco presenta ranuras para poder alinearlos correctamente, lo que supone una gran ayuda porque además el encaje es perfecto. Sólo en los delanteros por su cara inferior hay que rellenar un escandaloso hueco del molde que tampoco dará mayor trabajo.
En la zona superior, además de los faros, herramientas y retrovisores hay que pegar algunas de las numerosas cajas de estiba aunque algunas ya vienen moldeadas sobre los guardabarros. Todas las escotillas de acceso, puertas y mirillas están moldeadas con la parte superior del casco y no se pueden mostrar abiertas, precio que hay que pagar en aras de la sencillez de montaje. La torreta se compone de apenas cinco piezas y hay que destacar el detalle tanto del cañón como de la ametralladora. El mayor inconveniente de esta maqueta es que la torreta no puede girar libremente una vez instalada la estructura de la antena, por ello conviene decidir previamente en qué posición se va a colocar. La antena y sus soportes son algo gruesos para la escala y podrían ser reemplazados por hilo de cobre o varilla de plástico, sin duda el aspecto final de la maqueta ganaría aún más al ser esta estructura tubular la característica más importante de este blindado de mando.
La hoja de calcas proporciona básicamente cruces, matrículas y símbolos de unidad para las cuatro opciones que aparecen en las instrucciones, pero sólo tres se representan a color en la parte posterior de la caja. Todas ellas, como no puede ser de otro modo, corresponden a vehículos pintados en gris Panzer. Las instrucciones están impresas en un folleto doblado que contiene una breves reseña histórica en varios idiomas, un diagrama de piezas (esto casi se lo podían haber ahorrado), ocho pasos de montaje y las cuatro versiones de pintura y calcas mencionadas. Los colores de las pinturas se refieren a la gama de Model Master, como suele ser habitual en el fabricante.
En el balance final, quizá lo mejor de todo sea el equilibrio entre sencillez de montaje y detalle general que Italeri ha conseguido con esta maqueta. Mientras no venga algo mejor de oriente, esta es sin duda la mejor maqueta de plástico fabricada hasta el momento de este interesante blindado de la Wehrmacht.◊
Italery retooled their 1/35 6-Rad kit in 2005 and that was a good occasion to do the same with its smaller scale counterpart a few months later. The kit consists of only one dark grey sprue containing 59 parts, the decal sheet and the instructions. Obviously the quality is not the one we are used to in other manufacturers such as Dragon or Trumpeter, especially in recent years, but I’m sure some modellers will thank the fact that Italery didn’t overengineer their new release and got straight to the point of simplicity and overall accuracy. The tooling is quite good and parts are reasonably thin for the scale with a noticeable exception I will mention below. There is neither flash nor sink marks in important spots as this is a fast build kit with details from the original vehicle nicely reproduced.
Building the kit is quite simple and parts fit surprisingly fine. You start by joining both halves of the hull and continue with the running gear. Although the transmission and the chassis are molded with the lower hull to simplify a few building steps, detail is good and you only need to add the three axles, suspension and wheels to have your model looking fine on your workbench and ready for the next chapter. Fenders are separate parts but slots on the hull are provided to be assembled correctly and are really a good help because fitting is perfect. Front fenders have boxes molded on and their hollows must be filled on the bottom sides, but this won’t be a difficult task.
From this point on assembly is even more straightforward, with only parts to be glued onto the upper hull such as headlights, rearview mirrors, pioneer tools and a bunch of stowage boxes but some of them are molded on the vehicle. Unfortunately, and for the sake of keeping the number of parts reduced to the necessary minimum, access panels, hatches and viewers can’t be shown open. You are almost done when assembling the turret which barely includes five parts, including gun and co-axial mg. Detail here is again excellent for such a simple item. The rack antenna is thick for the scale and could be replaced with wire or plastic rods, the final look of the model would really improve as this tubular structure is the most remarkable feature of this command vehicle. I think the main and only problem with this kit is that the turret cannot rotate once the antenna is glued into place (this also happens in Italeri’s 1/35 kit by the way), so it’s better to decide the turret position previously.
The decal sheet provides German white crosses, plate numbers and tactical markings for the options shown in the instructions, but only three of them are represented on the box. All of them wear the usual overall Panzer grey of their time. Instructions are printed on a folded leaflet that includes a brief historical summary, parts diagram, eight assembly steps and the aforesaid painting and decaling options. Color references are given in the Model Master range as usual with the manufacturer.
On the whole, perhaps the best thing of all is the balance between easy assembly and overall detail that Italeri have achieved in this kit. While we wait for something even better from the East, this is unquestionably the best plastic kit released at the scale so far of this interesting vehicle of the Wehrmacht.◊
