VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- Gran maqueta sencilla de montar y mucho margen para escenas y añadidos. Lástima que Revell no la prodigue más.
- Outstanding kit and an easy build with great possiblities for scenes and additions. Revell should reissue it more often.
La maqueta
Los modelistas talludos seguidores de esta escala seguramente recordarán al menos un par de ediciones de este FAMO. Acaso la entrega más interesante de las cuatro que Revell ha hecho es la que incluye un par de piezas de artillería alternativas (Mörser 18/Kanone 18) para complementar al vehículo. Ya hace tiempo que salió la última edición y no hemos vuelto a tener una nueva en años.
Salvando las distancias en tamaño y detalle, la maqueta tiene el despiece de otra a mayor escala. La caja contiene seis bastidores de piezas, la hoja de calcas, una alargada lámina de acetato y las instrucciones. Uno de los bastidores incluye las piezas, no aplicables en esta maqueta, para montar la pala excavadora trasera. Las piezas están moldeadas con muy buena definición y no poseen rebabas ni marcas visibles. Sólo algunas muestran restos de salida del eyector. El nivel de detalle general es excelente, destacando en este sentido las piezas del tren de rodaje y el estampado de las planchas de la caja de transporte.
Motor y chasis
El motor está dividido en mitades con piezas adicionales para el volante de inercia, el filtro de aire, el engranaje de la transmisión y el embrague. La pieza está solo parcialmente detallada, pues se echa de menos, por ejemplo, las correas del alternador, el ventilador y los colectores de escape. Sin embargo, creo que podemos darnos por contentos con lo que hay, que es mucho más de lo que se estila en otras maquetas recientes en esta escala.
El bastidor está formado por dos largueros que llevan los brazos de la suspensión y el eje de la rueda tensora moldeados en su cara externa. Entre ambos largueros aparecen las barras de torsión, cuya pieza más retrasada va unida al lado trasero del bastidor, al que hay que pegar el enganche de remolque. Una vez conformado el chasis, se puede añadir el cabrestante, la caja de cambios y ambos tubos de escape, que son extremadamente finos y delicados.
Tren de rodaje
Excepto las ruedas tractoras, que vienen en mitades, las demás ruedas son de una pieza y muestran muy buen detalle tanto en el buje como en la banda de caucho. Las tractoras también poseen buena definición en los dientes y el detalle en sus caras externas es excelente, mostrando todas las ranuras abiertas.
Las cadenas son de tramos con eslabones sueltos para adaptarlos a los extremos de las ruedas tractoras y tensoras. Las caras internas de los eslabones no tienen detalle salvo los dientes, pero en el exterior muestran con cierta precisión las zapatas de caucho y los detalles de las partes metálicas.
El eje delantero forma una pieza con la barra estabilizadora. La ballesta también está moldeada con la plancha que le sirve de protección por delante. Las ruedas están divididas en mitades con buen detalle en el buje y en la banda de rodadura de los neumáticos, aunque resulta algo tenue.
Carrocería y cabina
La carrocería cuenta con una base que abarca desde la parte frontal del vehículo, moldeada con los guardabarros que dejan un hueco al motor, hasta los asientos posteriores. El suelo de la cabina muestra algunas planchas definidas en el suelo, los pedales y un par de cajas de respeto sin mucho detalle. En la zona posterior aparece un suelo antideslizante con las minúsculas cantoneras para sujetar los fusiles de la dotación.
El morro está formado por la parrilla frontal, que muestra buen detalle en las rejillas de ventilación, el capó moldeado con los accesos al motor en posición cerrada, y los lados provistos de aletas de ventilación. La zona frontal está detallada con dos buenos faros, además de los retrovisores y gálibos. En el extremo anterior también hay que pegar el gancho de remolque delantero. Por debajo del morro hay dos piezas independientes que simulan una sección del arco de los pasos de rueda.
El panel frontal de la cabina está liso en su lado delantero, ya que el hueco del motor no contiene nada. En la cara posterior lleva representado parte del depósito de combustible. El salpicadero es de una pieza con los indicadores marcados en relieve sin calcas. La pieza se añade superpuesta a otra similar que incluye una fina asa. Sobre estas piezas va colocado el marco del parabrisas, moldeado con los limpiaparabrisas y rebajes para instalar los cristales de acetato. Las instrucciones proporcionan las medidas para recortarlo. La lámina de acetato es extremadamente grande y nos sobrará gran parte de ella, así que lo mejor es conservarla para otras ocasiones.
El habitáculo delantero de la carlinga contiene la palanca de mandos, el freno de mano, el volante y los asientos con respaldos unidos al panel trasero. Por debajo de los asientos hay también un panel con un par de cizallas moldeadas en relieve.
La parte posterior de la cabina está acotada por un panel delantero con una pieza aparte para simular el estante del armamento de la tripulación, aunque los fusiles no están incluidos en la maqueta desgraciadamente. El asiento trasero es parecido al delantero, con dos piezas para la base y el respaldo, además de un panel frontal por debajo detallado con palas y otras herramientas. Finalmente, tenemos otro panel por detrás del compartimento que va unido al chasis y separa la caja de carga de la cabina.
Los lados de la carrocería son ambos de una pieza y abarcan desde el compartimento del motor hasta la caja del vehículo. Las asas de acceso están representadas pero no bien definidas.
Caja
La forman un suelo y tres lados. Estos últimos están muy bien detallados con el estampado de las planchas por ambos lados y traen las bisagras y cierres, aunque con poca nitidez. Los guardabarros, los soportes de la caja, así como la rueda de repuesto y su estante van pegados debajo del suelo. Los guardabarros tiene los pilotos traseros moldeados en relieve. La caja cuenta también con una pieza aparte que representa con finura los soportes del toldo plegados.
Piezas adicionales
La maqueta incluye cinco piezas para formar el dispositivo de remolque por si deseamos mostrar el modelo como vehículo de recuperación. Las instrucciones sugieren un Panzer IV. Esto añade un aliciente más a una maqueta bastante buena de por sí.
Como menciono más arriba, la maqueta tiene también un bastidor extra con diez piezas para construir el dispositivo articulado de la pala excavadora, aunque las instrucciones no muestran el montaje. Este bastidor sólo es aplicable en la segunda edición de este FAMO (Revell 03100).
Calcas
La hoja es pequeña y contiene dos juegos de matrículas, insignias de unidad y marcas para la carrocería. Los motivos están bien impresos y poseen aspecto fino y mate, con algo de exceso de soporte.
Instrucciones
Vienen en un folleto de tamaño A4 de 16 páginas impreso en blanco y negro en el que encontramos un resumen histórico sobre el vehículo, una lista de colores en códigos de Revell, un plano numerado de piezas, 36 secuencias de montaje y perfiles.
Las versiones de pintura muestran un vehículo en el clásico Panzergrau y otro con camuflaje blanco invernal degradado sobre el gris original.
Valoración
No creo exagerar mucho si escribo que este FAMO pide a gritos una carga y algo para remolcar, pero sobre todo un escenario donde posarse. El montaje me parece al alcance de cualquier modelista y el detalle general está muy por encima de lo que ofrecen otras maquetas a esta escala incluso hoy día.
Ningún aficionado debería perderse esta maqueta o cualquiera de sus reediciones cuando tope con ella en cualquier parte porque no sabemos hasta cuándo Revell la va a seguir ignorando.◊
The kit
Older modellers who follow this scale will surely remember at least a couple of boxes of this FAMO. Maybe the most interesting release that Revell have issued is the one including a pair of alternative artillery pieces (Mörser 18/Kanone 18) to complement the vehicle. It’s been a while since the fourth and last kit came out and we haven’t had a new one for years.
Bridging the gaps in size and detail, the kit could well look like another one in a larger scale. The box contains six sprues of parts, the decal sheet, a long acetate sheet and the instructions. One of the sprues includes the parts, not applicable in this kit, to build the rear earth spade. The pieces are molded with very good definition without flash or visible marks. Only some pieces show small ejector pips. Detail is excellent throughout, especially on the running gear and the stamping of the cargo bed sides.
Engine and chassis
The engine is divided in halves with additional parts for the flywheel, air filter, transmission gear and clutch. The part is only partially detailed, as the alternator belts, the fan and the exhaust manifolds are missing, for example. However, I think we can be content with what is included, which is much more than we can find in some kits today.
The chassis frame is made up of two side members molded with the suspension arms and the tension wheel axle on their external face. The members are joined by the torsion bars with the last bar attached to the rear frame side, which is detailed with the tow hitch. Once the frame is finished, the winch, the gearbox and both exhaust pipes can be added. The pipes are extremely thin and delicate.
Running gear
Except for the drive sprockets, which come in halves, the other wheels are one piece and show very good detail on the hubs and rubber bands. The sprockets also have good definition in the teeth and detail on their external faces is excellent.
The tracks include both lengths and loose links to adapt them to the ends of the sprocket and idler wheels. The internal faces of the links have no detail except for the teeth, but on the outside they show defined rubber pads and the holes in the metal pieces.
Body and cab
The body has a base extending from the front of the vehicle to the rear seats. The piece is molded with the fenders and leaves a gap for the engine. The cab floor shows some plates on the floor, the pedals and a couple of passable stowage boxes. The rear cab features a non-slip floor with a tiny rack to keep the crew’s rifles.
The nose is made up of the front grille, which shows nice detail in the grilles, a hood molded with closed engine hatches, and the sides provided with vents. The front area features two nice headlamps, the mirrors and the width indicators. The front of the vehicle is provided with a small tow hook too. Below the nose there are two pieces that render a section of the wheel arches.
The cab front panel is flat on the front side but the back side shows the fuel tank rear. The dashboard is in one piece with raised gauges without decals. The piece is attached to a base including a thin handle. The windshield frame is placed on these pieces and is molded with the wipers and recesses to install the acetate windscreen. The correct windshield size is given in the instructions. The acetate sheet is extremely large so most of it can well go to the box of spares for future kits.
The forward cab contains the gear lever, the handbrake, a steering wheel and seats with backrests attached to the rear panel. Below the seats there is also a panel molded with a couple of raised shears.
The rear cabin has a front bulkhead with a separate rack for the crew’s weapons, but the rifles are not included. The rear seat is similar, with pieces for the base and backrest, as well as a front panel underneath detailed with spades and other tools. Finally, we have another bulkhead behind the seat attached to the chassis separating the cargo bed from the cab.
The body sides are both one piece and span from the engine compartment to the bed. The access handles are included but are not sharply molded.
Cargo bed
It is made up of a floor and three sides. These are detailed with stamped plates on both sides and even the hinges and latches, though poorly definined. The fenders, the bed supports, as well as the spare wheel and the wheel rack are attached under the bed floor. The fenders include raised taillights. The bed also has a separate piece rendering folded tarp holders.
Additional parts
The kit includes five pieces to build the towing bar in case we want to show the model in the role of a recovery vehicle. The instructions suggest a Panzer IV kit to be used. This adds another incentive to an already pretty good kit.
As mentioned above, the box also has an extra sprue with ten parts to build the earth spade, though the instructions don’t show the assembly. The spade is only applicable in the second release of this kit (Revell 03100).
Decals
The small sheet contains two sets of plates, unit markings, and white lines for the body. They are well printed with thin appearance and a matt finish. They show some excess of carrier film.
Instructions
They come in a 16-page A4 brochure printed in black and white. It contains a historical summary about the vehicle, a list of colors in Revell paints, a numbered parts plan, 36 clear assembly steps and profiles.
Paint versions show a vehicle in standard Panzergrau color and another one with weathered winter camouflage over the original gray.
Conclusion
I don’t think I’m exaggerating too much if I say this FAMO is crying out for a load and something to tow, but above all a setting in a scene. Assembly seems to be within the reach of any modeller’s skills and overall detail is far above what other kits of this size offer today.
No scale and topic fan should miss this kit or any of the reissues whenever they can find it because we don know how long Revell will continue ignoring it.◊
