VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:
- No hay, por ahora, alternativa a esta escala, pero afortunadamente Tamiya hizo un buen trabajo tanto en el detalle como en el montaje. Recomendable a modelistas de cualquier nivel
- There is no alternative kit, so far, for this StuG at the scale but, fortunately, Tamiya did a good job both in detail and ease of assembly. Recommendable to armor fans.
La maqueta
Esta maqueta es ya muy conocida por los aficionados a los vehículos militares y fue el primer StuG III que Tamiya lanzó en esta colección, seguido por otros dos Ausf. G de producción media/final e inicial. A la lista le faltaría un Ausf. F para completar la serie de modelos de este vehículo alemán producidos en mayor número. Como todas las de esta escala, la maqueta está diseñada para conjuntar un buen nivel de detalle con la facilidad de montaje, lo cual la hace adecuada para un gran número de modelistas con menor experiencia.
La caja contiene cuatro bastidores, dos de ellos iguales, la mitad inferior del chasis realizada de metal, dos pequeños tornillos, cuatro rodamientos de plástico, la hoja de calcas y las instrucciones. En su línea habitual, Tamiya nos proporciona piezas bien moldeadas, limpias y con un detalle notable.
La edición comparte el chasis metálico y el tren de rodaje con las maquetas del StuG III Ausf. G. Los demás bastidores son específicos para el modelo Ausf. B, aunque también hay algunas piezas comunes en ellos. Nada de qué extrañarse, puesto que ambos vehículos también empleaban componentes iguales en la realidad.
La maqueta representa un Ausf. B final, caracterizado por cadenas más anchas y la posición alterada del primer rodillo de retorno respecto a los vehículos producidos con anterioridad.
Chasis, tren de rodaje y cadenas
Para no repetir la información que publiqué en este apartado en mi revisión del modelo Ausf. G Frühe Version, remito al lector a dicha página. Sólo cabe añadir en esta ocasión que la rueda tensora es diferente y correcta para el modelo B. Cada rueda está dividida en dos piezas que muestran tanto los radios como las aberturas y las cubiertas de los ejes con un detalle muy bueno.
Superestructura
La plancha frontal del chasis, la cubierta del motor y los guardabarros vienen unidos en una pieza. La parte superior de la superestructura está separada del conjunto, así como las salidas de ventilación del motor. Las escotillas de acceso de la transmisión y el motor vienen separados, con buen detalle en las bisagras en ambos casos. Uno de cada par de accesos tiene fondo que Tamiya ha usado para situar los tornillos de sujeción del chasis, quedando así ocultos por las tapas. Este sistema evita usar cianocrilato para pegar esta pieza al chasis metálico. En la cubierta del motor hay también otros dos accesos cerrados con bisagras detalladas y una pieza que incluye los cables de arrastre, que muestran buena definición.
Los guardabarros están correctamente texturizados con el suelo antideslizante y llevan algunas herramientas moldeadas encima, como el hacha, la cizalla, la manivela de arranque y la barra de palanca. Otras, sin embargo, vienen separadas como el gato, la maza, el extintor, las baquetas de limpieza del cañón o los ganchos en forma de S. Otros detalles adicionales incluyen piezas aparte para las luces de posición y freno, el faro Notek y los faros dotados de protectores.
La parte superior de la superestructura viene de una pieza excepto las planchas verticales frontales y trasera separadas. La plancha frontal del conductor lleva los visores horadados y el protector de la mirilla aparte. Las escotillas de la parte superior vienen por separado pero unidas en una pieza. De querer mostrarlas abiertas hay que cortarlas. Las piezas muestran bisagras detalladas. Los enganches soldados, la mirilla lateral del conductor, las asas, la base de la antena y el soporte para plegarla son piezas por separado.
La base del cañón está compuesta por varias piezas que hay que añadir antes de pegar la superestructura. El afuste comprende dos piezas divididas en mitades con un rodamiento entre dos de ellas que permite elevar o deprimir el cañón. Otro rodamiento situado en la base del chasis sobre el que va encajado el afuste también permite el giro lateral del arma. El cañón va montado sobre un vástago que sobresale del afuste interior. El tubo viene horadado y de una pieza, mientras que el mantelete está moldeado en mitades. El sistema de montaje resulta ingenioso, pero no es una novedad en Tamiya, que se caracteriza por ingeniárselas muy bien para combinar sencillez con utilidad.
Calcas
La hoja muestra cruces alemanas, numerales, marcas de unidad y tácticas, así como anillos de victoria para el cañón. Los motivos están correctamente impresos pero el soporte parece algo grueso.
Instrucciones
Vienen impresas en un folleto doblado de ocho páginas impreso en blanco y negro. El folleto muestra información histórica sobre el vehículo, 14 secuencias de montaje y perfiles, con las habituales indicaciones en diferentes momentos del proceso de armado y la pintura. Como no podía ser de otra manera, las referencias de colores pertenecen a la gama de pinturas del fabricante. Las opciones de pintura muestran tres vehículos pintados de gris y situados en Rusia durante la Operación Barbarroja.
Valoración
Tras las antiguas maquetas de Bandai, sólo Tamiya se ha atrevido con el StuG en esta escala, lo que resulta extraño dada su popularidad. A algunos no les gustará el detalle de las herramientas moldeadas sobre los guardabarros o la ausencia, en esta caja, de una figura que acaso hubiese redondeado el producto. Sin embargo, la maqueta me parece adecuada para modelistas de cualquier nivel de experiencia porque su montaje carece de complicaciones y tiene un buen nivel de detalle.◊
The kit
This kit is already well known to military vehicle fans and was in fact the first StuG III Tamiya released in this 1/48 series, followed by two medium/final and initial production Ausf. Gs. The list should have included an Ausf. F to complete the most produced variants of this German vehicle. Like all Tamiya’s 1/48 AFV kits, this is also designed to combine a good level of detail with ease of assembly, which makes it suitable for most modellers regardless their experience.
The box contains four sprues, two of them identical, the lower chassis made of metal, two small screws, four poly caps, the decal sheet and the instructions. As usual, Tamiya provides us with nicely molded, clean parts with remarkable detail.
The edition shares the metal chassis and undercarriage with the StuG III Ausf. G kits. The other sprues are specific to the Ausf. B, although there are also some common parts in them. Nothing to be surprised about, since both real vehicles also used the same components.
The kit represents a final Ausf. B, featuring by wider tracks and a different position in the first return roller as compared to previously produced vehicles.
Chassis, running gear and tracks
To avoid repeating the information that I published in this section in my review of the Ausf. G Frühe Version, I refer the reader to that page. Here I will only mention that the idler wheel is different and correct for the Ausf. B. Each idler is divided into two pieces showing the spokes, openings and hubs in very good detail.
Superstructure
The front plate, engine deck and fenders come molded in one piece. The upper part of the superstructure is separated as well as the engine outlets. The engine and transmission access hatches are separate, with nice detail on the hinges on both sets. One of each pair of accesses has a bottom that Tamiya used to place the fastening screws of the chassis. When the covers are attached, they will not be seen. This system avoids using cyanoacrylate to glue this piece to the metal chassis. On the engine deck there are also two other closed accesses with detailed hinges and the tow cables in one part which show good definition.
The fenders are nicely textured with anti-slip tread and have some tools molded on, like the axe, wire cutter, crank handle and pry bar. Others, however, come separately, such as the jack, the sledgehammer, the fire extinguisher, the barrel cleaning rods or the S shackles. Other additional details include separate pieces for the smoke grenade box, position and brake lights, the Notek headlight and the headlamps provided with covers.
The upper part of the superstructure comes in one piece except for the separate front and rear vertical plates. The driver’s front plate has the binocular openings and a separate visor cover. The top hatches come separately but are molded as one piece. If you want to show them open, you have to cut them. They show detailed hinges. Weld-on latches, the driver’s side visor, the handles and the antenna base and trough are separate parts.
The gun mounting is made up of several pieces that need to be added before gluing the superstructure. The mounting comprises two pieces divided in halves with a poly cap in between two of them that allows the barrel to be raised or lowered. Another poly cap located on the chassis is used to fit the mount and also allows gun traverse. The gun is attached to a strut that protrudes from the mounting. The barrel comes hollowed and in one piece, while the mantlet is molded in halves. The mounting system is ingenious, but it is not anything new for Tamiya, which is known for making complicated subassemblies easier for the modeller.
Decals
The sheet is well stuffed and shows German crosses, numerals, unit badges and tactical markings, as well as victory rings for the gun. Printing is quite good but the carrier film seems a bit thick.
Instructions
They are printed in an 8-page folded leaflet printed in black and white. The leaflet shows historical information about the vehicle, 14 assembly sequences and profiles, with the usual callouts at different times during the assembly and painting process. Color references is of course given in the manufacturer’s paint range. Painting choices include three vehicles in overall gray and located in Russia during Operation Barbarossa.
Conclusion
After the old Bandai kits, only Tamiya has dared with the StuG at this scale, which is strange given its popularity. Some may not like the tools molded with the fenders or the lack of a figure that might have rounded off the product. However, I find the kit suitable even for the less experienced because it will surely be an easy build and is quite nicely detailed.◊
