La maqueta
Es sorprendente comprobar que antes de las maquetas de Tamiya, sólo Bandai hubiese hecho este popular vehículo a escala 1/48. Y eso fue en los años 70 del siglo pasado. La verdad es que aquella maqueta tenía incluso mucho más detalle que la que toca revisar hoy, pues no sólo llevaba los 4 tripulantes, sino también un interior bastante completo que incluía el motor, la transmisión, munición y hasta la misma opción de armamento que la actual de Tamiya.
Volviendo al presente, la edición de Tamiya puede considerarse veterana, pues tiene ya casi dos décadas. Conociendo al fabricante, le ha de durar aún muchas más. La caja trae 5 bastidores de piezas, el chasis fabricado de metal en una sola pieza separada, dos tornillos para sujetar la superestructura al chasis, un tramo de hilo trenzado, 4 rodamientos huecos de plástico, las calcas y las instrucciones.
La maqueta representa un StuG III Ausf. G inicial, producido a partir de finales de 1942. Entre los rasgos externos diferenciadores más evidentes de este cañón de asalto respecto a modelos anteriores está la cúpula y la ametralladora sobre la superestructura, y con respecto al Ausf. G fabricado desde finales de 1943 encontramos aún el característico mantelete del cañón cuadrado, en lugar del modelo de perfiles redondeados conocido como Saukopf. El modelo también puede terminarse como un Sturmhaubitze 42 dotado con un obús leFH 18 de 105 mm. adaptado al vehículo.
Como cabe esperar en Tamiya, las piezas están bien moldeadas y limpias de rebabas. Hay marcas visibles en la cara interna de las planchas de blindaje externo (Schürzen) y en el lado interior de las cadenas. Estas últimas serán más difíciles de eliminar, pero también más fáciles de disimular.
La maqueta carece de interior propiamente dicho. En compensación, Tamiya ha puesto todo el detalle por fuera, destacando en este sentido las herramientas, escotillas y accesos que en otras maquetas de esta escala, incluso del mismo fabricante, no siempre son piezas aparte.
Chasis
Casi todo el chasis se ha fabricado en una sola pieza metálica para simular el peso del vehículo. En el interior sólo hay dos tubos para atornillar la superestructura, mientras que el exterior los lados están completos con la excepción de la cara trasera, a la que hay que añadir encima una plancha de plástico adicional, y la delantera, donde hay otra plancha remachada opcional no aplicable al StuH 42. Los lados del casco muestran tanto los ejes de los rodillos de retorno y de la rueda tensora como de los brazos articulados de la suspensión. En la cara inferior se han simulado diferentes tapas y escotillas que parecen tener excesivo relieve. Es obvio señalar que todas las piezas que se añaden a este chasis metálico deben pegarse con cianocrilato.
El panel trasero contiene piezas separadas para los enganches de remolque, los escapes y su plancha de protección. Los escapes están moldeados con los silenciadores.
La suspensión está detallada con cuatro amortiguadores, los enganches de remolque delanteros y la cubierta de la transmisión de la rueda tractora en la parte delantera. La cubierta muestra buen detalle en las tuercas de sujeción y en su interior hay que colocar un rodamiento de plástico para introducir la rueda. El cilindro nos permitirá girar la tractora lo suficiente para hacer coincidir los dientes con las cadenas.
Tren de rodaje y cadenas
Las ruedas motrices se han moldeado en mitades, al igual que las tensoras. El detalle externo en estas últimas me parece algo mejor. Aunque los bastidores del tren de rodaje son idénticos a la maqueta del StuG Ausf. B, Tamiya ha incluido la rueda tensora correcta para el Ausf. G en un pequeño bastidor añadido a los originales que también contiene las ruedas de repuesto.
Las ruedas de rodadura vienen en pares separados con muy buen detalle en la llanta, dotadas de las aberturas correctas y buena definición en las bandas de caucho. Lo mismo ocurre con los rodillos de retorno, aunque poseen marcas de eyector en la cara interna de la rueda exterior que no se apreciarán.
Las cadenas están separadas en tramos y eslabones. Los que corresponden a la parte superior se han moldeado con cierta ondulación para simular el peso. El detalle es algo mejor por fuera que por dentro, aunque los dientes muestran buena definición. Los enganches de los eslabones están bien abiertos, por ello no parece difícil ajustar las cadenas a las ruedas motrices. Como he indicado, las caras internas tienen algunas marcas de eyector no profundas que pueden rellenarse tomándose algún trabajo extra. Creo que compensará.
Superestructura
La superestructura se ha moldeado de una sola pieza que incluye los guardabarros. Dos tornillos con ajustes simulados dentro de uno de los huecos de acceso a la transmisión y al motor respectivamente permiten unir la superestructura con el chasis. En al lado interno de la pieza hay que pegar el soporte con la figura del comandante, la base que contiene las piezas internas del cañón y una pieza que simula los huecos de la ventilación del motor.
La parte frontal de la superestructura lleva dos planchas de blindaje de refuerzo, excepto en el StuH 42. Las tapas de acceso a la transmisión vienen separadas pero moldeadas en una sola pieza. También hay un faro Notek.
En la parte trasera las cubiertas del motor son piezas aparte y también las rejillas de ventilación laterales, aunque estas necesitan fotograbados para detallar la rejilla puesto que las piezas son huecas. Las ruedas de repuesto y los soportes también vienen separados.
Pasando a la casamata, la parte delantera muestra las dos planchas añadidas a ambos lados de la parte inferior, una de ellas con el visor del conductor abierto moldeado en la pieza. Esta zona también incluye los lanzadores de humo, huecos y en piezas separadas. Para la cara trasera Tamiya ha incluido una plantilla de plástico para marcar la posición del ventilador, la barra de sujeción de las cadenas de repuesto y los soportes de las antenas. Esto resulta un poco extraño, ya que la superestructura no coincide con la de la maqueta del Ausf. B y es idéntica a la del Ausf. G final. El fabricante sólo debía haber marcado la posición de estas piezas en un lado totalmente plano. Se vuelve a demostrar que, en ocasiones, los designios de las marcas son inexcrutables.
La parte superior dispone de una escotilla separada para el cargador cuyas puertas vienen unidas, lo cual requiere cortarlas si se va a emplear una figura para simular el hueco. El escudo tiene grosor razonable para la escala y los filos aparecen un poco biselados para darles finura. No posee el sistema de apertura unido a la escotilla y no parece lógico instalarla desplegada con la escotilla cerrada, así que en este punto es el modelista quien debe decidir cómo situar ambas piezas y las modificaciones necesarias. La ametralladora viene de una pieza y sus detalles están bien definidos.
La cúpula del comandante dispone de dos piezas, con los visores en una de ellas. La tapa de la escotilla viene separada y detallada por ambos lados. Aunque la pieza está en los bastidores, esta versión inicial no llevaba el deflector redondeado que protegía al comandante, ya que se comenzó a incorporar en el Ausf. G posterior y no siempre. Como opción, la maqueta incluye el extremo de los binoculares del comandante.
El cañón es opcional. Se puede instalar el KwK 40/L48 de 75 mm. o bien el obús adaptado leFH 18 de 105 mm. En el caso del cañón, el freno de boca viene en dos piezas y el tubo en una, mientras que parte del tubo del obús y el freno están separados. El montaje del arma es común para ambos y comprende varias piezas internas fabricadas ad hoc y en nada parecidas a las reales para montar el mantelete en la parte externa. El mantelete viene de una pieza con anillo de salida alternativo para cada cañón. Para poder introducir el tubo hay dos rodamientos intermedios en las piezas internas. Esto nos permitirá orientar correctamente el freno de boca. Otro rodamiento va fijado sobre la base del cañón y permite darle un escaso giro a ambos lados.
Los guardabarros están finamente texturizados con la superficie antideslizante. Sobre ellos encontramos numerosas herramientas (cizalla, gato, hacha, barra de ajuste de las cadenas, equipo de limpieza del cañón, taco de madera, extintor). Los cables de remolque se ha simulado con un trozo de hilo trenzado, que tal vez no sea lo más realista para reproducirlos. Los enganches del cable son de plástico.
Como opción también podemos incluir los Schürzen que vienen fabricados de una pieza con soportes pegados a los lados de la superestructura. Las planchas son finas y algo biseladas en los filos para darles más realismo. La cara externa muestra bien los enganches de las planchas y las líneas de separación son realistas aunque demasiado uniformes. Como he señalado, las caras internas muestran un buen puñado de marcas de eyector que habrán de eliminarse si se van a usar estas piezas.
Figura
Como en muchas otras maquetas de la serie, Tamiya ha incluido una figura que en este caso es sólo algo más de media. Representa el comandante en actitud de estar dirigiendo su vehículo. La figura muestra cierta definición en los detalles de la cara y el atuendo, compuesto por gorra y parka invernal con capucha. Los auriculares y el cable que muestra en las manos se ha moldeado también con la figura.
Calcas
La hoja de calcas no es muy amplia pero está bien impresa. Incluye cruces balcánicas, números, marcas tácticas y de unidad, marcas de victoria y decoraciones para el casco. Los motivos muestran acabado mate, son finos y poseen gran nitidez.
Instrucciones
Consisten en un folleto doblado de 10 páginas impreso en blanco y negro que contiene información histórica sobre el vehículo, 19 capítulos de montaje muy claros, con frecuentes llamadas sobre diversos detalles del montaje o la pintura, y perfiles de las tres terminaciones posibles del modelo.
Los perfiles tienen cierta variedad y muestran un StuG III pintado sólo en Dunkelgelb, el segundo va pintado en Dunkelgelb con líneas disruptivas en Rottbraun y está equipado con Schürzen, mientras que el último es un StuH 42, también en Dunkelgelb. Las referencias de pintura, como siempre, son las del propio fabricante.
Valoración
La maqueta tiene su lado fuerte en el buen detalle general, y correcto para el modelo Ausf. G inicial, y la presumible facilidad de construcción. Las opciones de montaje en el armamento, las planchas protectoras laterales y la figura, que nunca está de más, también le dan juego al modelista.
Por otra parte, las marcas de las cadenas y los Schürzen, que inevitablemente habrá que afrontar, así como la posición de la ametralladora y la escotilla del cargador me parecen lo menos bueno de esta edición. Con todo, esto no debería desanimar a cualquier modelista interesado en esta escala porque estoy seguro que disfrutarán la maqueta.◊
The kit
It is amazing to realize that only Bandai had made this popular vehicle in 1/48 scale before Tamiya. Lots of water has passed under the bridge ever since because that was in the 1970s, no less. In fact, that kit had even more detail than the one I review here, since it not only included the 4 crew members, but also a fairly complete interior that comprised the engine, transmission, ammunition and even the same weapon choice as in the current Tamiya kit.
Coming back to the present, this release can already be considered an old-stager after around two decades in the market. Knowing the manufacturer, it should last even longer. The box contains 5 parts trees, the metal chassis made as a single separate piece, two screws to fasten the superstructure to the chassis, a length of braided wire, 4 poly-caps the decals and the instructions. A one-piece commander half figure has also been included.
The kit represents an early StuG III Ausf. G, produced from the end of 1942. Among the most obvious differentiating external features with respect to previous marks is the cupola and the machine-gun on the superstructure. Compared to the Ausf. G manufactured since the end of 1943, we still find the square barrel mantlet, instead of the rounded one installed later and known as Saukopf. The model can also be finished as a Sturmhaubitze 42 fitted with a 10.5cm leFH 18 howitzer adapted to the vehicle.
As one would expect from Tamiya, parts are well molded and free from flash. There are visible marks on the inner face of the external armor plates (Schürzen) and on the inner side of the tracks. The latter will be more difficult to remove, but also easier to hide.
The kit lacks an interior. To compensate, Tamiya has molded most of the detail on the outside, and, in this sense, a special mention should go to the tools, hatches and accesses that in other kits in this scale, even from the same manufacturer, are not always separate pieces.
Chassis
The lower chassis has been made from a single metal piece to simulate the weight of the vehicle. On the inside there are only two rods to screw the superstructure, while on the outside the sides are complete with the exception of the rear plate, which is a separate plastic piece to be attached on top. The front side also has another riveted front upper plate that is not applicable to the StuH 42. The hull sides show both the return roller and the idler shafts as well as the suspension arms. On the lower face, different covers and hatches have been rendered, but they look a bit too raised. Obvious to say, you have to use CA glue to attach pieces to the lower chassis.
The rear panel contains separate pieces for the towing eyes, exhausts and the armored cover. The exhausts are molded with the mufflers.
The suspension is detailed with four shock absorbers, the front towing eyes and the sprockets wheel drive covers. The covers show good detail in the nuts and there is a poly-cap to be placed inside each cover. The poly-caps will allow to turn the sprockets to match the tracks teeth.
Running gear and tracks
The drive wheels as well as the idlers have been molded in halves. Surface detail seems better in these latter. Although the sprues containing the running gear are identical to those present in the StuG Ausf. B kit, Tamiya has added the correct idler for the Ausf. G in a small sprue, which also contains the spare wheels.
Road wheels come in separate pairs with very good rim detail, with the correct openings and good definition on the rubber tires. The same goes for the return rollers, although they have ejector marks behind the outer wheel that will not be seen when attached.
The tracks are molded in links and lengths. The upper lengths are sagged to simulate the weight. The detail is somewhat better outside than inside, although the teeth show good definition. The link gaps are wide open, so it should not be difficult to fit the tracks to the drive wheels. As mentioned, the inner faces have some shallow ejector marks that can be filled with some extra work. I think the effort will reward the modeller.
Superstructure
The superstructure has been molded in one piece including the casemate and the mudguards. There two screws with threads inside the hull, as mentioned. The fastening points are inside a front hatch and the engine hatch. Inside the piece, you have to attach the base for the commander figure, the gun base and a piece rendering the engine vents.
The upper hull front has two bolted armor plates that, again, are not applicable to the StuH 42. The transmission access covers are separate but molded in one piece. There is also a Notek headlight.
The engine covers and the side intakes are separate pieces. These come hollow and a photo-etched grille would come in handy. The spare wheels and brackets also come separately.
Moving up to the casemate, the front is provided with two lower bolted plates, one of them with the driver’s visor molded open on the piece. The smoke launchers come in separate pieces and are hollowed. Tamiya has included a plastic template to mark the position of the fume extractor, the stowage basket for the spare tracks and the antenna mounts on the rear casemate plate. This is a bit strange, as the superstructure does not match that of the Ausf B kit and is identical to that of the late Ausf. G release. The manufacturer could simply have marked the position of these parts on the flat side. One again, the designs of the brands are inscrutable.
The upper casemate has a separate hatch for the loader with doors molded closed, so they should be cut if a figure is to be used to simulate the gap. The machine gun shield has reasonable thickness for the scale and the edges appear slightly beveled for get some finesse. The hatch lacks the opening system attached to the shield and it does not seem logical to install this unfolded with the hatch closed, so at this point it is up to the modeller how to place both pieces and the necessary modifications. The machine gun comes in one piece and detail is well defined.
The commander’s cupola has two pieces, with the visors molded in one of them. The hatch cover comes separately and detailed on both sides. Although the part is in the sprues, this early version did not have the rounded deflector that protected the commander’s cupola, as this protection was first incorporated, and not consistently, in the later Ausf. Gs. As an option, the kit includes a pair of binoculars for the commander.
The gun is optional. You can use either a 75mm KwK 40/L48 gun or the 10.5cm leFH 18 howitzer. In the case of the gun, the muzzle brake comes in two pieces with the barrel in one, while a section of the howitzer barrel and the muzzle brake are separate. The rest of the armament pieces are common for both weapons and includes several internal parts to attach the mantlet on the outside. The mantlet comes in one piece with alternative jacket rings for each barrel. Here, we also find a couple of poly-caps to insert the barrel into the mantlet and get the correct position of the muzzle brake. Another cap is used in the gun base inside the casemate and allows the weapon to rotate a bit on both sides.
The mudguards are finely textured with the non-slip surface. There is a bunch of tools to add, such as a pair of shears, the jack, an axe, the track adjusting bar, barrel cleaning equipment, a wooden block, a fire extinguisher and so on. The tow cables have been simulated with braided thread, which may not be the most realistic way to render them. The eyes are plastic parts.
As an option we can also include the Schürzen that are manufactured in one piece with supports glued to the sides of the superstructure. The plates are thin and slightly beveled on the edges to make them more realistic. The outer sides show the hooks correctly and the engraved lines between the plates look fine, but the arrangement is “standard” and unrealistic for a weathered vehicle. As I’ve pointed out, the inner sides show quite a few ejector marks which will need to be filled if these parts are to be used.
Figure
As in many other kits in the series, Tamiya has included a figure just molded to the knees. It represents the commander controlling his vehicle operation. The figure shows some definition in the details of the face and the clothes, these consisting of a hat and a hooded winter coat. The headphones and cable shown in the hands have also been molded with the figure.
Decals
The decal sheet is not very comprehensive but it is well printed. It includes Balkan crosses, numbers, unit and tactical markings, victory markings and hull decorations. The decals have a matt finish, are thin and sharp.
Instructions
They consist of a 10-page folded leaflet printed in black and white containing historical information about the vehicle, 19 very clear construction chapters, with frequent call-outs on different assembly or paint details, and profiles for a choice of three vehicles.
The profiles have some variety and show a StuG III painted in overall Dunkelgelb, the second is painted in Dunkelgelb with Rottbraun disruptive lines and is fitted with Schürzen, while the last is a StuH 42, also in overall Dunkelgelb. Paint references, as always, are those from the manufacturer.
Conclusion
The kit has its assets in the nice detail, which is correct for an early Ausf G, and the presumable ease of construction. Assembly options in the armament, the side protection plates and the figure, which is always welcomed, also give the modeller a range of different finishes.
On the other hand, the marks of the tracks and the Schürzen, which will inevitably have to be dealt with, as well as the position of the machine gun with the loader’s hatch seem issues to consider. All in all, this shouldn’t discourage any modellers interested in this scale because I’m sure they will enjoy the kit.◊
