Esta maqueta es la última, por el momento, de la serie que Dora Wings viene editando sobre el CH-300 Pacemaker y sus derivados. En esta ocasión le ha tocado el turno al Skyrocket, básicamente un Pacemaker con motor más potente y algunas prestaciones más. La Marina norteamericana se hizo con tres aviones, que son los que aparecen en esta maqueta, y los denominó XRE-1, empleado como aparato de investigación de comunicaciones por radio, XRE-2, usado como transporte y XRE-3, un avión ambulancia con espacio para dos camillas.
La maqueta viene en una caja de dimensiones similares a ediciones anteriores, pero con diseño actualizado. Contiene cinco bastidores de piezas grises, dos de piezas transparentes, una plancha de fotograbado, las instrucciones, las calcas y la habitual hoja de mascarillas que Dora Wings incluye en sus maquetas. El contenido viene protegido en bolsas selladas y separadas para los transparentes por un lado y para las calcas, fotograbados y mascarillas por el otro.
Los bastidores A y D, así como la plancha de fotograbados y los transparentes son idénticos a los de la maqueta del Bellanca J-300 (Dora Wings 72012) cuya revisión puede leerse en esta página. Tres de los bastidores, las instrucciones y, obviamente, las calcas, son nuevos. En esta revisión sólo mencionaré las diferencias respecto a la edición del mencionado J-300, ya que el resto puede leerse en esa revisión.
La calidad del plástico es similar, sólo que en esta maqueta hay algunos ligeros restos de plástico en algunas piezas, poca cosa. Las piezas mayores siguen teniendo el mismo problema con la multitud de bebederos que los sujetan a los bastidores. En este aspecto no hemos ganado nada respecto al J-300.
El interior y su montaje es similar, pero no idéntico. Las diferencias de este Skyrocket están en la ausencia de calca para el panel de instrumentos y la adición de cuatro asientos, compuestos de tres piezas (base, asiento y respaldo) en la parte posterior de la cabina. Para ser rigurosos con la historia, habría que cambiar esta disposición en la versión ambulancia XRE-3. Lo difícil será encontrar imágenes del interior de este avión y ver cómo y dónde iban las camillas. También para el XRE-1 faltarían las radios pertinentes. De cualquier forma, poco o casi nada se va a ver del interior.
El fuselaje se monta igual que en el CH-300/J-300, pero hay que abrir dos ventanillas a cada lado, ya que el molde las trae cerradas, aunque la tarea no se antoja demasiado difícil porque están bien grabadas en el interior. Las ventanas encajan desde dentro por medio de finos rebajes en los bordes de los huecos. El parabrisas es igual, en tres piezas, y será engorroso de montar.
Otras diferencias notables, aunque algunas no se apreciarán, están en el motor. El motor del Skyrocket era diferente al del CH-300 Pacemaker y Dora Wings así lo ha reflejado al incluir una nueva corona de cilindros en dos mitades, una pieza frontal diferente con tomas de aire, escapes más gruesos y rectos, y hélice de palas más largas que las del J-300. El montaje del resto del motor es el mismo y requiere cierta habilidad con los diminutos soportes de la bancada.
Las piezas y el montaje de las alas y los planos de cola son iguales que los del CH-300/J-300, pero no así el tren de aterrizaje, cuyas patas tienen una segunda opción, con amortiguadores más robustos y carenados, que llevarían sólo el XRE-2 y -3 según las instrucciones.
De nuevo la hoja de calcas ha sido impresa por Decograph con idéntica buena calidad a la del J-300. En esta maqueta la hoja incluye escarapelas norteamericanas de preguerra, matrículas, rótulos, insignias de unidad y algunos estarcidos. La versión ambulancia tiene una calca errónea que reza “RE-3” en lugar de “XRE-3” (denominación correcta del modelo). Como he señalado, no hay calcas para los indicadores del panel de instrumentos.
Además de la caja, lo realmente nuevo en esta edición es el folleto de instrucciones, que también ha recibido nuevo diseño. Consta de 12 páginas y está impreso a color en papel satinado. Incluye un plano de piezas (no todas numeradas), 20 secuencias de montaje y perfiles para los tres aviones mencionados arriba. Cierra el folleto una tabla de colores con correspondencias en las gamas de pintura de Mr Hobby, Tamiya, Ammo Mig, Hataka y Life Color. Estas instrucciones son claramente mejores que las infumables, por erróneas, de ediciones anteriores, si bien siguen sin señalar la apertura de los puntos de unión de las alas con el fuselaje ni la posición exacta del panel de instrumentos.
Como las maquetas anteriores, esta reedición con cambios está dirigida a modelistas con experiencia en ediciones multimedia. El detalle me parece suficiente, algo mejor incluso que el del J-300, y el montaje no aparenta demasiada dificultad para quien ya lleva algunos modelos de este tipo a las espaldas, salvo en la colocación de algunos fotograbados. Pocos fabricantes, además de Dora Wings, se hubiesen atrevido a crear por fin la primera maqueta del CH-300 Skyrocket de plástico a esta escala. Los aficionados a los aviones de entreguerras ya tienen otro modelo para su colección.◊
This new kit is the last Dora Wings have released of the Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker variants so far. This time the box is dedicated to the CH-400 Skyrocket, basically a Pacemaker with a more powerful engine and a bit better performance. The U.S. Navy procured three units, depicted in the instructions, with the designations XRE-1 (a radio research aircraft), XRE-2 (utility transport), and XRE-3, an ambulance designed to carry two stretchers.
The kit comes in a box with similar size as in the previous releases, but with updated design. It contains five grey sprues, two clear sprues, the decals, a PE fret, the instructions and the usual sheet of masks Dora Wings include in their kits. The content comes well protected inside separate self-sealing bags for the clear parts on one side, and the decals/PE fret/masks on the other.
Sprues A and D as well as the PE fret and clear parts are the same included in the Bellanca J-300 kit (Dora Wings 72012). Three of the sprues, the instructions booklet and of course the decal sheet are new. I will only refer to the differences with the J-300 release in this review as I published an article about that kit not so long ago. The review can be read here.
Quality of plastic is similar in the Skyrocket kit, but this time we can find slight flash on some parts, only on a few of them and nothing to worry about. Bigger pieces also show too many gates on the sprues. In this aspect we have not gained anything compared to the J-300 kit.
Cockpit assembly is similar but not identical. The Skyrocket kit does not include decals for the panel gadgets and there are also four seats, molded in three pieces each, to fill the space behind the pilot cockpit. To be true to history, the modeller should change the interior for the XRE-3 ambulance variant, but pics of the interior to let us know where and how stretchers were arranged will surely be hard to find. The same happens with the XRE-1 radio equipment. In any case, little or almost nothing of the interior will be seen.
Fuselage assembly is also the same as in the CH-300/J-300, but the modeller has to open two windows on each side as they are closed on the fuselage sides. The task is not too difficult because they are well engraved. Clear parts fit into the gaps from the inside and are attached with the aid of thin recesses on the window edges. The windshield is identical to the other kits, also comprising three clear parts, and needs care to build it.
The engine includes some other differences, but not all will be visible. The Skyrocket engine was different from the CH-300 Pacemaker powerplant and Dora Wings have correctly depicted this including a new part for the row of cylinders that comes in halves, a different engine front, straight and thicker exhausts, and a big propeller with longer blades. The rest of the engine parts are alike, and the tiny engine bearers, so tricky to glue, are also included.
Also the same as in the CH-300/J-300 kits are the wing and tail plane assembly, but landing gear struts have a second choice, with thicker faired shock absorbers that are applicable only to the XRE-2 and -3 variants according to the instructions.
The decal sheet has been printed by Decograph too and shows the same outstanding quality. The sheet here includes US prewar roundels, codes, unit badges and some stencils. The ambulance variant has a wrong decal reading “RE-3” instead of “XRE-3” (the correct variant designation). As said before, there is no decal for the panel gauges.
In addition to the box, what is really new in this edition is the instruction booklet, which also has a new look. It consists of 12 pages printed in color on glossy paper. It shows a parts plan (not all the parts are numbered), 20 assembly sequences and profiles for the three aircraft mentioned above. The last page includes a color chart with matches in Mr Hobby, Tamiya, Ammo Mig, Hataka and Life Color paint ranges. These instructions are clearly better than those included in previous releases and correct some of the evident mistakes they have, though they still do not indicate the drilling of the fuselage-wings struts or the instrument panel position clearly.
This kit, as the preceding releases, is aimed at experienced modellers in short-runs. Overall detail seems enough to me, even better than that of the J-300, and assembly should not be too difficult for those who already have a couple of these builds under their bellies, except for the tiny PE parts that need extra care. Few manufacturers other than Dora Wings would have brought us the first plastic kit of the CH-300 Skyrocket at this scale. Fans of interwar aircraft have another item for their collection.◊
