Podemos colocarlos extendidos o no.

The kit
This is a reissue of the first kit from the new Airfix mold, also released in 2012. I wrote a review of that first kit some time ago (Fairey Swordfish Mk.I, reference A04053). This floatplane version have not been released again since this kit appeared, may be because it’s less common than the usual landplane variant.
Besides the decals and almost identical instructions, the kit contains the same sprues as the first boxing plus a new frame with the floats and the beaching gear. This means that you can also build a wheeled aircraft out of this box. The molding of parts is good, with marks only on the cockpit sidewalls and the fuselage floor, all very faint and invisible after gluing the fuselage. The engine has some small plastic nodules easy to clean.
Assembly options are the same as in the first kit and allow you to display the model with folded wings, select a variety of underwing armament, and position the tail rudder in a non-neutral position.
The kit can be painted in two liveries: one pre-war and the other with an interesting camouflage pattern from the early months of World War II.
Review
The cockpit pieces are exactly the same as those of the first release, and the fuselage’s structural detail also features the same faint, invisible marks hidden by the two tubular frames attached on the sides. In addition to the side windows and a not very good forward machine gun, there is a floor for the three crew members.
The pilot’s cockpit is elevated and includes the seat, the instrument panel with decals, and the control stick. Airfix didn’t bother to provide the pedals because they aren’t visible. There is a bulkhead behind the pilot’s cockpit. The windshield is thin and well-reproduced. The instrument panel is attached after gluing the cockpit deck. This is a single piece with access openings for the crew and some instruments next to the pilot. Overall, the cockpit seems slightly below the level of detail in the rest of the kit.
The observer’s station includes a seat but there are two parts to build a large auxiliary fuel tank that have only been provided as an option in a later 2017 boxing (A04053A).
The rear station includes a bench, a fairly good radio, and the machine gun with its mount. The weapon can be stored beneath a small rear panel added to the fuselage after gluing the two halves together. The machine gun is not particularly good and can be replaced with something better to improve detail.
The fuselage consists of three pieces, with the ventral side separate. Exterior detail is cleanly engraved and includes the oil cooler, an optional starter crank, the access steps, and the arresting hook. One difference with the first kit is that we will need to drill holes in the fuselage in several places to later attach the float struts.
At first glance, the engine looks fine, with sharp and clean cylinders. The rear exhaust manifold, propeller gearbox, and exhaust pipe are separate, as are the three cowling panels and the outer ring. The propeller hub is separate. The blades are thin and look well-profiled.
The reproduction of the wing surfaces is quite good, with a smooth yet crisp appearance. The ailerons are well-engraved, and the navigation lights are defined. The landing lights are clear pieces. The wings can be displayed folded or unfolded and show the same elements and arrangement as in the first kit. A template is included to build the wings folded. This will make the task much easier, as it aligns the wing center section and the sruts in the correct position.
The tail surfaces have separate rudder and elevators. The rudder can be posed within the maximum angle specified in the instructions. In addition to the bracing struts, there are two hooks to secure the wingtips when folded. These can be displayed extended or not.
The two aircraft in this kit had no armament under the wings or fuselage, as they were likely intended for reconnaissance roles. However, apart from an auxiliary fuel tank, the kit’s armament includes six bombs, flares, and a torpedo, which can also be displayed separately on a trolley. All these items have separate shackles and pylons.
Each float comes in three parts. The top part features sharp raised detail, and the sides have very fine and precise engraving, plus the rudders molded on one of the side pieces. The four V-shaped struts are attached under the wings and on the nose sides, and have separate footrests. The beaching gear comprises two wheels and a front support.
The decals are printed by Cartograf on a sheet containing two types of British roundels, the instrument panel, registrations, numbers, wing walk lines, and some stencils. Decals look fine and glossy, with good sharpness and color density. There is no excess carrier. Some roundels are slightly off center.
The instructions come in an A4 booklet with twelve pages printed in black and white. They contain a historical summary of the aircraft, 73 assembly steps, and two pages of profiles in color with paint codes from the Humbrol enamel range. The assembly sequence is clearly shown, separating the steps to build the wings folded. As with the previous kit, a diagram for bracing the model is missing.
The aircraft from the Ark Royal sports a contrasting livery with aluminum and matte light gray. The Swordfish from the battleship HMS Valiant is painted in a sharper camouflage pattern on the upper surfaces and under the wings. I would say it is the «Shadow Shading» pattern used by Fleet Air Arm biplanes between 1939 and 1941.
Conclusion
Those looking for an uncommon Swordfish version won’t be disappointed by this kit, as it is practically the same one considered a milestone at the time for its good overall detail as well as the clever assembly design, totally novel compared to so many previous kits.◊
