Perfectamente empaquetada en bolsas separadas para calcas, fotograbados, casco y plancha de piezas más pequeñas se presenta esta maqueta que HobbyBoss dedica al submarino de la Clase Kilo. Varios fabricantes han editado también al menos una maqueta de esta clase de sumergibles a varias escalas: Maquette, Trumpeter, Bronco Models y la misma HobbyBoss a escala 1/700, por lo menos. La maqueta consta de dos piezas para el casco, un pequeño bastidor que contiene la vela, distintos dispositivos para la misma, timones, hélices y algunos detalles menores del casco, una plancha de fotograbados para montar la peana y la hoja de calcas.
El plástico es de buena calidad y las piezas están perfectamente moldeadas, sin rebabas y con las marcas del eyector en las superficies no visibles. Los detalles y líneas del casco y de la vela están bien representados para la escala, aunque, como en toda maqueta, hay detalles mejorables, como las bitas de la cubierta. Como suele ser habitual desde tiempos recientes, el casco está dividido en dos secciones, superior e inferior, en lugar del tradicional despiece babor-estribor que dejaba líneas de unión demasiado visibles. El ajuste de ambas mitades es perfecto, y eso que el ensamblaje no se hace con tetones sino encajando las dos piezas mediante un reborde que lleva la sección inferior. Sencillo y eficaz.
La vela presenta igualmente buena calidad, con las luces de posición y otros detalles bien representados, sólo las barandillas laterales se han moldeado en la misma pieza, si bien es comprensible debido a su tamaño. Al menos, ahí están. Los diferentes dispositivos electrónicos de la torre (periscopios, sónar, esnórquel, antenas, etc.) vienen en diminutas piezas de plástico muy bien realizadas. Sólo hay que tener precaución para extraerlos del bastidor y manejarlos con cuidado.
Los timones de inmersión de popa y el timón de dirección inferior llevan aletas separadas para mejorar el detalle. La maqueta incluye como opción dos tipos de hélices, de seis y siete palas. No he logrado saber si corresponden a modelos concretos de la Clase Kilo (Proyecto 877, Proyecto 877EKM o el más reciente Proyecto 636), con toda probabilidad la hélice de siete palas sí es usada por los sumergibles chinos comprados a Rusia, pero desconozco si usan ambas indistintamente. Otra opción de montaje son los timones de inmersión delanteros, ya que en el referente real se escamotean en superficie. Si no deseamos mostrarlos desplegados, hay que practicar rebajes en el casco para representar las cavidades donde se alojan.
A diferencia de otras maquetas de submarinos de HobbyBoss, en esta no hay piezas de fotograbado opcionales para las hélices y otros detalles pequeños. La plancha sólo incluye cuatro piezas para montar la peana. La hoja de calcas es de buena calidad, los colores están saturados y los detalles no contienen excesiva película de soporte. Se incluyen banderas nacionales y navales rusas y chinas.
Las instrucciones comprenden dos hojas separadas, como suele ser habitual en el fabricante. Una de ellas está impresa en papel cuché satinado a color, con vistas laterales, frontal, trasera y superior del sumergible y una guía de pinturas en las gamas de Mr Hobby, Vallejo, Model Master, Tamiya y Humbrol. La otra hoja corresponde al montaje e incluye un diagrama de los bastidores y una vista general del despiece, que no tiene mayor problema en vista del escaso número de elementos que montar.
En conjunto, esta es una maqueta con muchas ventajas para cualquier modelista: Fácil de construir, su nivel de detalle en relación a la escala es bueno y su precio suele ser mejor aún. Si te gusta la escala, este submarino Clase Kilo puede ser una buena opción para tu vitrina.◊
The kit comes perfectly packed in separate bags for decals, PE fret, hull parts and a small sprue. Obviously this is not the first kit that manufacturers have devoted to the Kilo Class submarines. Some of them have also made them at different scales: Maquette, Trumpeter, Bronco Models and HobbyBoss at 1/700, at least. The kit comprises two halves for the hull, a small sprue which includes the conning tower, different electronic gadgets to detail it, rudders, propellers and a few smaller parts for the hull, a small PE fret to build the stand and a small decal sheet.
The media is quite good, the usual one with HB and parts are quite well moulded, with no flash present and ejector marks only in non-visible spots. Details and lines running on the hull are correctly represented for the scale, although some of them, such as the bitts on the deck, can still be improved as in any kit. As usual from a few years on, the hull comes in upper and lower halves, different from the traditional starboard-port hull assembly which left seam lines all along the kit compromising detail on deck. Fitting of both parts is simply perfect, even if the help for the alignment comes in the form of a small flange running along the rim of the lower hull part. Simple and effective.
The conning tower is similarly fine with sidelights and other small details well represented, only the side rails have been moulded with the tower, a slight flaw that seems acceptable for their size and scale. At least there they are. The different electronic devices for the tower (sonar, periscopes, snorkel, aerials and so on) are really tiny but nicely moulded parts. Needless to say, be extremely careful when you take them out from the sprue and handle them.
The aft diving rudders and the bottom rudder have separate sections for the fins to improve detail. The kit includes two types of propellers (six and seven blades) as an option. So far I haven’t been able to find out whether they belong to different projects (or models) in the Kilo Class (Project 877, Project 877EKM, or the latest Project 636). I only know that the seven-bladed propeller is used at least by some subs in the Chinese navy today, but I ignore if they use both types interchangeably. Another assembly choice is for the bow diving rudders, which are normally retracted when the sub sails on surface. If you don’t want to show them, the hull should be recessed accordingly to show their tips inside it.
Differently from other HB sub kits, there are no optional PE parts for the propellers or other small details. The fret only includes four parts to build the stand with only one of them sporting the Kilo Class label. The decal sheet is fine, colours are in register and saturated without too much carrier film. Both national and navy flags for Russia and China are included.
Instructions, as usual with HB, come in two sheets. One of them is printed in coated paper and shows different views of the submarine in colour. Paint references are given in Mr Hobby, Vallejo, Model Master, Tamiya and Humbrol ranges. The other sheet is for the assembly and shows a general exploded view of the subassemblies, no major problem considering the number of parts to build.
All in all this Kilo Class kit has lots of advantages: it’s easy to build, the level of detail in relation to the scale is good and the price is still better. This is also a kit for modellers with any level of experience. Why not add a Kilo Class sub to your shelf? If you like the scale, this is a good choice.◊
