VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:

Maqueta aún aceptable, aunque necesita una actualización. Es una pena que los fabricantes principales lleven décadas ignorándola. Gracias a Rafael Navarro por su ayuda para identificar las versiones y las equivalencias de colores de Gunze y Tamiya, y a Félix Carballo por sus orientaciones sobre los moldes de Heller-Humbrol y Revell.
Still a good kit which needs a new tooling. It’s a pity that the main manufacturers have been neglecting it for decades. I wish to thank Rafael Navarro for his help to identify the units in the instructions and the colour correspondence in Gunze and Tamiya. Also thanks to Félix Carballo for his comments on the Heller-Humbrol and Revell toolings.

El Ar-196 parece una maqueta sin suerte en la escala pequeña. La última que debió aparecer fue con toda probabilidad esta que comento, y es nada menos que de 1991. Se trata en realidad de una reedición de la anterior de Heller-Humbrol, pues ambas son iguales. Ignoro si la aún más antigua de Airfix fue el origen de las otras dos, o si son moldes distintos. A estas alturas del panorama modelístico todavía está por ver que un gran fabricante haga un molde nuevo de este aparato en cualquiera de sus versiones. Estoy seguro que, al menos a 1/48, tendría gran éxito, pues los interiores pueden verse con mucha claridad y los esquemas de camuflaje dan mucho juego a la hora de pintar.

La maqueta viene despiezada en cuatro grapas del mismo tamaño, más otra pequeña con los transparentes. Las piezas, y esto es buena seña, carecen de marcas de eyector y están limpias de rebabas. Para los años que tiene a sus espaldas, el plástico no es excesivamente grueso, e incluso las piezas transparentes son razonablemente finas y claras. Comparando las dimensiones y formas con las del monográfico de Wydawnictwo Militaria son correctas en general, si acaso las costillas del fuselaje tienen un poquito más de relieve del necesario, y en las alas naturalmente sobra el panelado en relieve. Por lo demás se aprecia un molde bastante aceptable para el tiempo que tiene.

El interior, como suele ser habitual en la escala, es muy parco. La zona delantera del piloto está formada por el asiento, la palanca de mandos, los pedales, el suelo, la mira y el panel de mandos que viene detallado en una calca transparente con los instrumentos de color negro, de modo que, a menos que pintemos el panel de gris oscuro, los indicadores no se apreciarán demasiado y lo mismo ocurre con el panel del copiloto. Éste apenas tiene un asiento y una ametralladora MG 15 incorrecta, de doble cañón, cuando en realidad sólo se empezó a usar a partir del modelo A-5. El motor por su parte está bien representado, así como la hélice. Un detalle importante del interior, y del que no hay mención alguna en las instrucciones, es el de colocar un contrapeso en la zona delantera del fuselaje, pues de lo contrario el aparato se asienta de cola si no lo pegamos a una base.

Del exterior, lo más sorprendente es que no hay escapes para el motor, simplemente parece que se olvidaron de ellos. Los estabilizadores vienen en una sola pieza, pero creo que presentan el grosor adecuado, pero no así las alas que en la realidad eran más planas. Por otro lado, los flotadores, que se montan en dos piezas cada uno, tiene los timones demasiado hacia arriba y hay que reposicionarlos si queremos presentar nuestra maqueta sobre el agua. Particularmente no me gusta el sistema de encaje de los soportes en los flotadores y en las alas, ya que probablemente habrá que sellar y lijar ambos una vez pegados. Quizá sea más razonable rellenar los huecos al menos en las alas y pegar los soportes directamente sobre éstas. Por último, respecto a los transparentes de la carlinga hay que señalar que vienen en tres piezas: el parabrisas, la parte central correspondiente a la posición del piloto y la parte final que ya viene abierta en una sola pieza para mostrar la ametralladora. Desgraciadamente, no se ha previsto que la parte correspondiente al piloto pueda ir abierta, pues no tiene holgura suficiente para pegarla encima de la sección central sobre la cual se deslizaba.

Las calcas son propias de Revell, no una reimpresión de las de Heller. Además de las cruces y los códigos de unidad, comprenden también algunos minúsculos estarcidos para el fuselaje, y los paneles de ambos tripulantes como ya he comentado anteriormente. El papel de soporte de mis calcas se ha vuelto amarillo, pero no así el blanco de las cruces que conserva perfectamente su tono original.

Las instrucciones, que destacan en otros aspectos como claridad y sencillez, tienen dos inconvenientes: en primer lugar, no dan información alguna sobre las unidades representadas en las opciones de pintura, y en segundo, aunque era ya de esperar, los colores aparecen con la pintoresca nomenclatura de la gama del fabricante. Gracias a Rafael Navarro, gran conocedor de los colores de la Luftwaffe, he podido elaborar esta tabla de equivalencias aproximadas con los acrílicos de Gunze Sangyo y Tamiya.

Para terminar, dejo apuntadas algunas mejoras específicas para esta maqueta (o la de Heller) existentes en el mercado. La carlinga puede ser sustituida por una vacuforme de Falcon (Set nº21 Luftwaffe WWII (4)), pero viene fabricada igual que la de la maqueta, es decir, sin posibilidad de abrir la zona del piloto a menos que se hagan ajustes peliagudos cuando menos. Para los interiores hay dos posibilidades en fotograbado: una reciente reedición de la marca Airwaves que incluyen piezas de sustitución para la carlinga y algunas zonas de los flotadores, y la de Eduard, mucho más completa, con piezas además para el motor, los flotadores y sus soportes, etc. Existe también un carro de transporte en resina de la marca Kora, aunque no siempre es fácil de conseguir, dada la limitada producción del fabricante.◊

The Ar-196 seems to be an unlucky kit at this scale. This was perhaps the last edition to be released in 1991. It is in fact a previous Heller-Humbrol kit reboxed by Revell with new decals and another German option instead of the Romanian included in the older one. I know there was another, and even older, Airfix kit but I can’t say whether they are the same tooling. I think it is time for a big manufacturer to make a more modern tooling of this beautiful German seaplane, I’m sure that it would be a great success at least at 1/48, because the interior cockpit can be easily seen even with the canopy closed and the camouflage schemes must be a pleasure to paint.

The kit comprises four sky blue plastic sprues of the same size and a smaller clear sprue for the canopy parts. The parts are free from the annoying pin marks or flash, they really look quite clean for the time of the kit. The plastic is not very thick and even the clear parts are reasonably thin and transparent. The dimensions and shapes compare quite well with the plans included in the Wydawnictwo Militaria book, only the fuselage ribs are slightly raised in the kit and of course the panel lines should also be engraved. Overall this is still quite a good tooling for the years it has left behind.

As usual in the scale, the interior cockpit is quite sparing. The pilot’s position comprises the seat, control bar, pedals, the floor, the gun sight and the instrument panel. There are decals for this panel and the observer’s panel, but the gadgets are black, so they won’t be clearly seen unless we paint the panel in dark grey. The observer’s compartment includes a seat and a wrong double-barrelled MG 15, since it became into use only from the model A-5 onwards. The engine and the propeller are good enough for the scale. An important detail which you shouldn’t forget is to glue some kind of ballast inside the front fuselage, otherwise your Arado will be the typical tail-sitter.

The most surprising thing of the kit is the lack of engine exhausts. They simply seem to have forgotten them. The stabilizers come in just one part and I think they are thin enough for the scale. A different matter are the wings, which were thinner and flatter. The floats come in two parts and their rudders are too much upwards, these should be glued a bit downwards if we want to show the seaplane on water. I particularly dislike the way in which the struts are fitted to the fuselage and floats, because they will probably need a lot of putty and sanding. It is perhaps more reasonable to fill the square holes and glue the struts directly on them. Finally, a brief comment on the clear parts. The canopy comes in three sections: the windshield, the central frame corresponding to the pilot’s position and the observer’s section which has been moulded in the open position to show the machine-gun. Unfortunately it is difficult to show the pilot’s section open because this part of the canopy is too short to glue it on the central one.

The decal sheet is made by Revell and the German markings are also different from the Heller Humbrol kit, whose sheet does not include stencils or the instrument panels either. My carrier sheet has become yellowish with time, but the decals are still fine, keeping their original colours.

The set of instructions, which on the other hand is clear and easy to follow, has two drawbacks: first, there is no information about the German units shown in the painting options, and second (but this is not surprising) the paint codes are given in the manufacturer’s picturesque code names (matt mouse grey, and the like). Thanks to Rafael Navarro, a real expert in the Luftwaffe colours, I have been able to do this table with the approximate correspondence between the RLM colour code and Gunze Sangyo and Tamiya acrylics.

Finally, some notes about specific detail sets available for this kit (also to be used with the Heller’s one). The canopy can be replaced by a vacform one from Falcon (Set no. 21 Luftwaffe WWII (4)), but this is not much better than the kit’s because it has the same problem to show the pilot’s section. For the cockpit and engine there are two brass frets: a recent re-edition by Airwaves which includes most parts for the interior and some for the floats, and Eduard’s set which comprises more parts for the interior, floats, struts, etc. There is also a resin trolley by Kora, although this is sometimes discontinued due to the manufacturer’s limited production.◊
