LO MEJOR – THE BEST:

Buenas formas en general. Las alas pueden mostrarse plegadas. Pueden añadirse opcionalmente bombas o depósitos auxiliares.

LO PEOR – THE WORST:

Molde antiguo. Líneas de panel demasiado anchas en las alas. Interiores muy malos.

VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:

Regular. Demasiado falto de detalles. Hay maquetas más actuales y mejores del Helldiver a esta escala.
Low middling kit. There are better Helldivers at this scale.

Lo primero que sorprende de este modelo es que un avión relativamente grande como este Curtiss Helldiver pueda caber en una caja tan pequeña, pero así es. Tras abrirlo, uno comprende la razón de tanto ahorro en cartón: lo que ahorran por fuera, lo gastan por dentro, en las instrucciones, que tienen un tamaño A3. Lo segundo que se nota es que esta no es una maqueta original de la marca, sino la antigua de Matchbox con diferente envoltorio. No hay que ser muy avispado para ver el «Made in England PK 104» en las bandejas. Se ha intentado borrar burdamente el «England» del molde con escaso éxito.

Dejando aparte de esto, hay que decir que el modelo contiene 43 piezas, repartidas en tres bandejas, más otra con los transparentes y la hoja de calcas. El azul del plástico es horroroso, pero al menos se sale del gris vulgar de tantas otros modelos. Es una pena, pero esta maqueta hubiese mejorado mucho con sólo algunos cambios que se le hubiesen hecho. Por ejemplo, si se hubiese incluido el suelo de la carlinga. Da pena ver al ametrallador (se incluyen las dos figuras) sentado sobre dos trocitos de plástico con los pies colgando. Tampoco hay que molestarse en buscar el panel de mandos ni palanca alguna ya que no existen. De esta manera, los tripulantes parecen un par de señores con ganas de hacer pis. Desde luego, el modelista que construya este aparato debería desecharlos y dedicarse a detallar lo que Revell ha dejado por hacer. Creo que merecerá la pena dedicar un poco de tiempo a esto, porque el avión podría salir ganando.

Otro inconveniente: las líneas de paneles en las alas están bien trazadas, pero en el fuselaje, en lugar de estar hendidas en el mismo, sobresalen, de modo que tocará rehacerlas. En esto se nota la antigüedad del modelo y que nuestras sospechas sobre la reutilización del molde de Matchbox no van mal encaminadas. Las alas pueden plegarse por la mitad, pero si deseamos presentar el modelo así, conviene que se estudie bien el detalle del interior de las mismas que iban pintadas en un verde oliva claro. Los tubos de escape a ambos lados del fuselaje habrán de ser también rehechos y a los pozos del tren de aterrizaje conviene cerrarles el perfil o pintar el interior de las alas antes de pegarlas, pues corremos el riesgo de que se vea el azul del modelo. Sin embargo, no todo son pegas. Los transparentes son bastante buenos y vienen bien detallados, y también la hoja de calcas. El modelo también da la posibilidad de ponerle dos bombas de 500 kilos o dos tanques auxiliares de combustible.

De las instrucciones ya se ha dicho que el más miope no tendrá problemas para interpretarlas, lástima que los dos únicos esquemas de pintura que proponen son prácticamente idénticos: uno para el escuadrón de bombardeo VB-8 de la Marina basado en la Costa Este en 1943, y otro para el escuadrón VB-17 del portaaviones Bunker Hill que combatió en el Pacífico en 1944.

Como conclusión vuelvo a la idea de que este Helldiver de Revell merecería una revisión por parte de la marca, ya que es una pena que un modelo bastante aceptable en líneas generales se vea lastrado por la carencia de detalles básicos del molde antiguo de Matchbox.◊

The first surprising thing of this model is that a relatively big plane as the Curtiss Helldiver can be hold in so small box, but so it is. After opening it, one realizes the reason of so much saving of carton: what they save in the box, they waste it in the instructions sheet which has an A3 size. The second odd thing is that this is not an original Revell kit, but the old Matchbox Helldiver with different wrapping. You needn’t be too clever to see «Made in England PK 104» on the sprues. They have tried to remove the «England» from the mould with no success.

The kit has 43 parts in three sprues plus another clear sprue with the crew canopies and the decal sheet. The blue plastic is really horrible, but at least it is not the dull grey of other models. It is a pity, but this kit would have been a quality model with only a few improvements that Revell could have easily made. For instance, if there was a cockpit floor, it would not be a shame to see the gunner figure (the crew is included) sitting on two flat pegs protruding from the fuselage halves with his legs hanging in the hollow. You needn’t bother to look for the instrument panel or any gear, they simply do not exist. This way both figures seem a couple of buddies in the urgent need to go to the toilet. Of course, the modeller building this plane should discard them and spend some time working what Revell has left undone. I think it will be worth the effort because the plane would look better.

Another problem: the panel lines on wings are correctly marked, but they are raised on the fuselage and they should be traced again. The wings can be folded, but if you want to show them so, it will be necessary a good study of the interior, which was painted light olive green. The exhaust stubs on both sides of the fuselage will have to be rebuilt and the wheel wells need to be closed or you should paint the interior of wings if you do not want the blue plastic to be seen. However, there are also good points in this kit. The clear parts are quite good and detailed, and also the decal sheet. The model includes the option of fitting either two 500-kg bombs or two drop tanks under the wings.

As I have said before, the instructions are big enough even for short-sighted modelers and they are easy to understand. The drawback is that the only two colour schemes are almost identical: one for the U.S. Navy VB-8 bombing squadron based on the East Coast in 1943, and another for squadron VB-17 on board carrier Bunker Hill which operated in the Pacific in 1944.

As a conclusion, I come back to the idea that the Revell Helldiver would deserve a revision by the company because it is a shame that a good model in general terms is let down by the lack of parts and details which would make it outstanding at this scale.◊
