Actualización de la antigua maqueta de ICM con nuevas calcas e instrucciones. Buen detalle general y montaje sencillo incluso para modelistas con menos experiencia.
Upgrade of ICM’s old kit with new decals and instructions. Overall decently detailed, it should be an easy build even for the less experienced.

La maqueta

ICM lleva alrededor de 20 años comercializando las maquetas a escala 1/72 del camión Ural-4320, cuyos moldes provienen de la desaparecida marca Omega-K. Estas versiones corresponden al modelo de carga general, al de repostaje de combustible, al de mando y el vehículo lanzacohetes BM-21 Grad. Todas ellas son ya, por tanto, bastante conocidas por los modelistas dedicados a los vehículos militares a esta escala. Ahora el fabricante ucraniano ha decidido darles un repaso con ocasión del conflicto actual en su país comenzando por esta versión de mando, que era la que menos se había prodigado anteriormente. La reedición incluye nuevas calcas e instrucciones, además de un envoltorio renovado.

Como es costumbre en el fabricante, la maqueta viene embalada dentro de una caja de cartón rígido provista de tapa y sobrecubierta en color. Dentro de ella, las piezas están bien protegidas, y las piezas transparentes envueltas aparte, si bien las calcas están sueltas. Para armar este camión disponemos de dos bastidores de piezas, moldeados en colores diferentes para distinguir aquellas que son específicas del modelo 43203, otros dos bastidores transparentes, las instrucciones y la hoja de calcas.

Las piezas están bien moldeadas y no contienen marcas visibles ni rebabas. Algunas pocas son delicadas de manipular, bien por su finura o bien por su diminuto tamaño. A primera vista, sin embargo, todo indica que el montaje no debe ser complicado en exceso considerando el crecido número de piezas de la maqueta, detalle que no sorprende en este fabricante, por otro lado.

Bastidor, motor y transmisión

El bastidor está moldeado en una pieza, a la que solo hay que añadir en los extremos el paragolpes delantero, provisto de ganchos de remolque separados, una pequeña plancha colocada bajo el travesaño trasero que contiene el enganche de remolque, además del travesaño que soporta la cabina. Los lados del bastidor contienen un pequeño cilindro de aire a un lado y los soportes del depósito de combustible al otro. El depósito viene separado en cuatro lados más el conducto de relleno. Ya que el bastidor no está marcado, las instrucciones nos facilitan la colocación de estos elementos laterales proporcionando su distancia en milímetros desde el extremo anterior del bastidor.

El motor está unido en la misma pieza a la caja de cambios. Ambos solo están representados en su mitad inferior sin detalle alguno, con apenas los volúmenes sugeridos. El motor cuenta con vástagos laterales para unirlo al bastidor. La caja de transferencia viene separada en mitades de las que debemos eliminar los soportes laterales. El tubo de escape semeja mucho al real, es fino y contiene dos conductos principales unidos al silenciador más una sección final abocinada pero no abierta. El radiador viene por separado y debe montarse tras la parrilla moldeada con la cabina.

Los tres ejes del vehículo son idénticos y vienen de una pieza, excepto la mitad superior separada de cada diferencial. La transmisión está seccionada en tres ejes con las juntas cardan bien detalladas. Las ruedas delanteras tienen los tambores de freno aparte.

Suspensión y ruedas

Montar los amortiguadores delanteros en el bastidor se hace un poco intuitivo, puesto que no contamos con marcas ni referencias de distancia en las instrucciones como en los casos mencionados anteriormente. Con todo, las piezas están bien detalladas con las abrazaderas y ojales. Los amortiguadores vienen separados y unidos a sus abrazaderas.

En el caso de la amortiguación trasera, las ballestas están moldeadas con los brazos de suspensión y los ojales van introducidos en los ejes traseros. Antes de pegar estas piezas, conviene instalar los soportes y la barra del balancín, que es bastante fina. Como en el caso anterior, el detalle de las abrazaderas y bridas en las ballestas es adecuado a la escala, y precisamente a causa del tamaño creo que se puede pasar por alto el hecho de que las láminas de las ballestas no estén definidas tanto en la suspensión delantera como en la trasera.

Las ruedas son de plástico y están divididas en mitades con las llantas separadas. El detalle de la banda de rodadura me parece bastante bueno y no será difícil disimular la línea de unión entre las mitades.

Cabina y caja

La cabina está moldeada en una sola pieza que comprende los guardabarros delanteros, el capó y la parrilla frontal, que viene bien detallada y abierta. La pieza también posee buena definición en el estampado de las planchas del techo y los guardabarros. Desgraciadamente las puertas se han moldeado cerradas, aunque las manetas y las bisagras sí están mínimamente representadas. El detalle externo comprende los retrovisores y el faro adicional, el escape de ventilación del motor, los faros delanteros (piezas transparentes) y los limpiaparabrisas, pero estos últimos debe fabricarlos el modelista. En la parte inferior hay dos piezas que simulan los pasos de rueda y los estribos a cada lado.

Las ventanillas son algo gruesas y fabricadas con rebajes que permiten insertarlas en sus huecos. No son muy transparentes, pero es cierto que tampoco muestran demasiada distorsión.

Del interior de la cabina poco se va a ver y el detalle no es sobresaliente. El suelo, el panel frontal y la base del salpicadero vienen juntos en una pieza. Los asientos están moldeados también en una pieza y aparecen lisos sin más. El salpicadero tiene algunos indicadores en relieve y hay también una palanca de marchas y el volante. Los pedales están ausentes.

Al igual que la cabina, la caja del compartimento de mando está moldeada de una pieza con el suelo por separado. El interior está vacío y poco importa, ya que el compartimento muestra todos los accesos cerrados. Lo único que hay que incluir por dentro son las ventanillas cenitales y la de la puerta trasera, que son semejantes en calidad a las de la cabina. El suelo es de una pieza, detallado por debajo con travesaños.

La parte delantera de esta gran caja está detallada con varias piezas que representan el sistema de ventilación del interior y algunos dispositivos más que desconozco. El techo se puede detallar opcionalmente con lo que parecen un par de antenas horizontales y un largo cilindro. La parte trasera contiene la rueda de repuesto con su anclaje y una antena telescópica con soporte y manivela para desplegarla. Hay también una pieza para simular la parte frontal del cuadro eléctrico del habitáculo. Por debajo de la caja aparecen otros dos cuadros eléctricos y los guardabarros traseros que muestran buen detalle en el estampado de las planchas.

Calcas

La nueva hoja de calcas, amplia y bien impresa, trae matrículas para dos vehículos, marcas nacionales, y dos patrones de camuflaje diferentes. Las calcas poseen aspecto brillante, buen contraste y no muestran exceso de soporte.

Instrucciones

Están impresas en un folleto A4 de cuatro páginas en color. Contiene una breve referencia histórica y técnica sobre el vehículo, un plano de piezas numerado, nueve capítulos de montaje y perfiles. Las vistas explosionadas son en general claras, aunque conviene estudiarlas bien y comprobar la localización de las piezas, especialmente al ensamblar la suspensión y la transmisión por el número de elementos que contiene.

Las opciones de pintura son idénticas, salvo por el color y forma del camuflaje conocido vulgarmente como “digital”. Ambas representan vehículos del ejército ucraniano, uno de ellos con datación no definida y el otro con el patrón de camuflaje empleado a partir de 2021, según el folleto.

Valoración

Aquí tenemos el primer modelo actualizado que ICM hace de este camión después de muchos años de reeditarlo sin cambios. Las piezas son las mismas de siempre, pero las calcas permiten ahora situarlo en este siglo, dejando atrás también en la pintura los antiguos colores de la era soviética.

La transmisión y suspensión son, a mi modo de ver, las zonas mejor representadas tanto en despiece como en detalle. Le sigue el detalle externo, quedando el interior de la carlinga por debajo de los anteriores. Unas piezas transparentes algo mejores y la posibilidad de mostrar abiertas al menos las puertas de la cabina no hubiesen estado de más, sin embargo creo que en conjunto la maqueta resulta bastante decente y da lo que promete en tamaño y precio.

El montaje no debe ser difícil ni lento incluso para el modelista con menos experiencia, aunque el chasis requiere un buen estudio de las instrucciones y de la secuencia a seguir en el montaje. El resto se antoja bastante asequible.◊

The kit

ICM have been marketing 1/72 scale kits of the Ural-4320 truck for around 20 years. The original tooling comes from the extinct Omega-K brand. The versions correspond to the general cargo truck, the fuel bowser, the command version and the BM-21 Grad rocket launch vehicle. So, all of them are already quite well known by AFV modellers on this scale. Now the Ukrainian manufacturer has decided to give them a review on the occasion of the current conflict in their country, starting with this command version, which was the one that had been least released previously. The reissue includes new decals and instructions, as well as new packaging.

As usual, the kit arrives in a rigid cardboard top-opening box and top dust jacket with the boxart. Inside the pieces are well protected, the clear pieces being wrapped separately, although the decals are loose. To build the kit we have two sprues molded in different colors to distinguish those specific to the 43203, two other clear sprues, the instructions and the decal sheet.

Parts are well molded and contain no visible marks or flash. A few of them are brittle, being too thin or tiny. At first look, however, everything shows that assembly should not be overly complicated considering the large number of parts, something not surprising in the manufacturer, by the way.

Chassis, engine and transmission

The chassis frame is molded in one piece, with separate pieces for the front bumper, provided with separate tow hooks, a small plate placed under the rear cross member containing the pintle hook, in addition to the cross member placed under the cab. The frame large members are detailed with a small air cylinder on one side and the fuel tank supports on the other. The tank is molded in four sides plus the filling chute. Since the location of these parts is not marked on the frame, instructions make things easier for us by providing their distance in millimeters from the front end of the frame.

The engine is molded with the gearbox in the same piece. Both are only rendered in their lower half without any detail and barely the suggested volumes. The engine has side rods to attach it to the frame. The transfer case comes separated in halves with the side holders to be trimmed. The exhaust pipe is very similar to the real one, it is thin and shows two main ducts attached to the silencer plus a flared but not open tail pipe. The radiator comes separately and attaches behind the grille molded with the cab.

The vehicle’s three axles are identical and come in one piece, except for the separate top half of each differential. The transmission is divided into three axles with well-detailed cardan joints. The front wheels have separate brake drums.

Suspension and wheels

Adding the front shock absorbers to the frame becomes a bit intuitive, since we do not have marks or distance references in the instructions such as those mentioned above. All in all, the pieces are well detailed with the clips and eyes. The shock absorbers come separately and molded with the brackets.

As regards the rear suspension, the leaf springs are molded with the suspension arms, with the eyes being inserted into the rear axles. Before gluing these pieces, it is advisable to install the brackets and the balancer, which is quite thin. As in the previous case, the clips and eyes are nice and look correct to the scale. Due to the size I feel we can lenient and overlook the fact that the leaves are not clearly defined on the front and rear suspension.

The wheels are plastic and divided in halves with the hubs molded apart. Detail on the tread look pretty good and it won’t be difficult to hide the seam line between the halves.

Cab and box

The cab is molded in a single piece comprising the front fenders, the hood and the front grille, which comes nicely detailed and open. The piece also has good definition in the stamping of the roof panels and fenders. Unfortunately, the doors are molded closed, although the handles and hinges are minimally represented. External detail includes the mirrors and the additional headlamp, the engine exhaust, the headlamps (clear pieces) and the windshield wipers, but these latter are to be provided by the modeller. There are two pieces for the wheel arches and the running boards on each side.

The windows are somewhat thick and molded with recesses to be attached into the cab gaps. They are not very transparent, but they don’t show much distortion either.

Little will be seen inside the cabin and detail is not outstanding. The floor, front bulkhead and dashboard base come together in one piece. The seats are also molded in one piece and look simple and smooth. The dashboard has some raised gauges and there is also a gear lever and steering wheel. The pedals are missing.

As in the cab, the rear box is molded in one piece with the floor separately. The interior is empty but this really counts little, since the compartment shows all the doors closed. The only pieces to be attached from the inside are the overhead and the rear door windows, which are quite similar, thick and not very clear, to those in the cab. The floor is in one piece, detailed with crossbars on the underside.

The front of the large box is detailed with several pieces for the ventilation system and a few other pieces that I don’t know what they can be. The roof can be optionally detailed with what seems a pair of horizontal antennas and a long cylinder. The rear side contains the spare wheel carrier and a telescopic antenna with support and crank to deploy it. There is also a piece for the front face of the electrical panel. Below the box there are two other electrical panels and the rear fenders that show good detail on the stamped plates.

Decals

The new decal sheet, large and well printed, includes license plates for two vehicles, national markings, and two different camouflage patterns. Decals have a glossy appearance, adequate sharpness and don’t show too much carrier film.

Instructions

They are provided on a four-page A4 color brochure containing a brief historical and technical reference about the vehicle, a numbered parts plan, nine assembly chapters and profiles. The exploded views are generally clear but a bit busy, so it is advisable to study them well and check parts placement, especially when building the suspension and transmission.

Paint choices are identical, except for the color and shape of the camouflage commonly known as “digital.” Both represent vehicles of the Ukrainian army, one of them without a defined date and setting and the other with the camouflage pattern used from 2021, according to the brochure.

Conclusion

Here we have the first updated release of this truck after many unchanged reissues. Pieces are the same, but decals now allow the finished model to be set in this century, leaving behind the old colors of the Soviet era in painting at the same time.

The transmission and suspension are, in my opinion, the best rendered areas both in parts breakup and detail. External detail follows, with the cab interior a bit behind them. It would have been fine to have better clear parts and the possibility to show at least the cabin doors open, but this is a decent kit and it offers what it promises in size and price.

Assembly should not be difficult or slow even for the least experienced modeller, although the chassis needs a good study of the instructions and decide on the assembly sequence to follow. The rest seems quite straightforward.◊
