LO MEJOR – THE BEST:

Molde antiguo. Interiores pobres. Alas algo gruesas. Necesita algo de experiencia con las riostras.

VALORACIÓN – CONCLUSION:

Buena calidad general pese al molde antiguo. Ideal para cualquier modelista si ya ha arriostrado otros modelos.

Por fin Revell se ha decidido a sacar el largamente anunciado Supermarine Walrus. La maqueta proviene del viejo molde de Matchbox que, según afirman quienes lo conocieron en tiempos, era una de las mejores del fabricante británico. Viendo el contenido de la pequeña caja, no lo pongo en duda, ya que los de Revell apenas se han molestado en borrar el «Made in Britain» del viejo molde.

Se compone de 58 piezas en total que se reparten en tres grapas. La pieza transparente correspondiente a la carlinga viene suelta, un descuido que cualquier fabricante que se precie debería evitar. Todas las piezas están muy bien realizadas, incluso las más delgadas y no se aprecian rebabas ni marcas de eyector. El panelado de las superficies de control es inciso y de gran calidad, mientras que el del fuselaje y cola está realizado hacia afuera, como en el referente real. Cada una de las alas se ha fabricado de una pieza, con mucho detalle en el entelado, sin embargo añaden bastante peso a la maqueta y parecen algo gruesas. El motor Bristol Pegasus se ha hecho también de una sola pieza y está muy bien detallado para ser de plástico, así como las hélices de dos palas cada una que, curiosamente, iban superpuestas, como en aparatos más antiguos. Los flotadores vienen, como suele ser habitual, en dos mitades.

Sin duda este es un modelo para los que no les guste detallar interiores. Solo hay tres figuras para los dos ametralladores (con su armamento), el piloto y sus respectivos asientos, eso es todo. Las escotillas de ambos ametralladores pueden dejarse abiertas o cerradas. Pero, aunque los detallistas tengan trabajo, lo tienen algo más fácil porque el interior es amplio y no tiene marcas de eyector. Por otro lado, es más que aconsejable analizar bien la posición de cada riostra y hacer los agujeros antes de construir las alas para no encontrar sorpresas.

La hoja de calcas es de excepcional calidad. Incluye insignias para un Walrus de la Flota Británica del Pacífico en 1945, y otras para la Flotille 53S Aeronavale francesa en 1948, esta última con insignias más bonitas, aunque con decoración más sosa. Las instrucciones muestran un paso a paso muy detallado y especificaciones de pintura para las dos versiones en cada uno de ellos.

En conjunto esta maqueta es muy recomendable pese a tratarse de un molde antiguo. No creo que la construcción en sí presente problemas para ningún modelista habituado a los biplanos, pero sí requiere de cierta experiencia en arriostrarlos.◊

Revell has finally decided to release this Walrus at last. The kit comes from the old Matchbox tooling, which, they say, was one of the best of the British brand back in the 1970’s. Judging from the content of the customary small box I think this is unquestionable because Revell has not bothered to delete the old «Made in Britain» from the mould.

The kit comprises 58 parts in three light grey plastic sprues. There is only one clear part and this comes loose inside the plastic bag, a poor detail for such a good brand. All the parts are correctly moulded, even the smallest or thinnest ones, with no flash or ejector pins. The panel lines of control surfaces are engraved whereas the fuselage and fin have raised panels as in the real referent. Each wing is moulded in one part. The fabric on them looks great but they are heavy for the model and seem a bit too thick. The Bristol Pegasus engine is nicely detailed to be made of plastic, and the same is true of the two-bladed propellers which were fitted one on top of the other as in older aircraft. The floats come in two parts as usual with model seaplanes.

This is obviously a kit for those who dislike detailing interiors. There are only two gunner figures (with their armament), a pilot and their seats, that’s it. The gunners´ hatches can be left open or closed. Although detailers have extra work with this kit, they are lucky to have enough interior space to include anything they want to add. On the other hand, it is advisable to study the position of each wire before rigging the model and to open the holes before fitting the wings.

The decal sheet is really top of the line and includes markings for a Walrus from the British Pacific Fleet in 1945 and others for the French Flotille 53S Aeronavale this latter version with more beautiful decals but duller decoration. The instructions come in an A4 8-page leaflet showing a very detailed step-by-step building and painting process for both versions.

This is a highly recommended kit although the tooling is not really new. Modelers who are used to biplanes won’t find it difficult to build, but rigging it requires some previous experience with easier models.◊
